What two riders born in Fortuna, Calif. went on to win supercross races. I know the answer to this because I was
related to both of them at one time. A couple of other fast pros from Humboldt county in the 70's and 80's were
Lance Burgess and Danny Villopoto.

Growing up in district 5 I was always on the fance to watch Mike Jones, Steve Crowe, and Steve Childress. Allso looked up to Shane Lawson and Davey Yezek (they were only a few years older).

But the greatest I ever saw was the one and only Mitchell Kumpstein. I never understood why he never made more of himself... maybe DC could chime in on that one?

Dave Newell...Dude was a bad ass on a 500 (again, late 80's)
Boo Stichter. He led the 250 national until the last lap at Colorado. I forget if it was Mike Bell or Hannah who past Boo on the last lap. Rick Burgett won the 500's. Boo rode the wheels off his KTM 250 and was the fastest in Colorado and surrounding in the early 80's. Super cool dude too.

Tim Locey, Johnny Whellchel, and Willy Simons. All three where just mad fast locally and Timmy was fast nationally but never got a break.

In minnesota in the early 90's
our local 125/250 A class state champ Was Cory Kearney ..
I was a kid at the time riding 80's
I remember thinking he was so fast I didnt see how any one could be faster lol of course the top pro's
where . Cory had a stint riding pro in SX and the nationals .
Some times I think the top local guys dont ride there best because of nerves or who knows what
but I've seen Cory flat out flying at Illeville a few times . Then I saw him racing pro and not riding as well as I had seen before.

Local Ohio racer Gary Easton. At 16 he won the Open class at the 77 AMA Amateur National Championship. He beat David Bailey that day at Lake Sugar Tree.

Oookay. I stand corrected. Like I said, I was a kid back then. Probably not the last mistake I'll ever make. Silly My apologizes to Mickey. I remember the Honda and H-D rides but didn't remember a factory Suzuki ride. I do remember him on a Suzuki from a local shop, S & M Suzuki I think was the name, out of Winston-Salem. Whatever the name was, it was the same shop Whetzel rode out of later on.

I agree man! I still get to ride with Jimmy a few times a year and went out to pizza with him this last summer. Jimmy is a good dude and still hauls ass for being in his 50's! He also won the +50 class at the vintage Des Nations race I believe.

Also....one of my very first heros in this sport was the Larson Bro's. Especially Phil. Here is a great MXA cover with him on the front.

Tim Locey used to come up and race woodland as well Uptite! I remember him , Scotty Tyler , Eric eaton , Phil and Mike larson and those guys would show up.....looked like a damn national.

Jimmy had some awesome years racing Davey,In 1980 he won all four NESC Expert championships and raced five 125 nationals finishing in the top 15 I believe ,I went into your vault but it doesn't show his 125 overall finish that year for some reason,unless I'm missing it.
His battles with Spencer Morrison in the 100 class were legendary around here. In addition to his many expert championships he won a lot of Vet championships too.

Currently there are the Bannister brothers, one of whom holds an awful lot of State titles, but they haven't had great success at the Nationals...... at least yet.

Bart Kellogg raced in the Senior expert class when I was racing senior amateurs twenty five years ago. I see he won the over 70 class championship at the OTMX this year.
The Bannisters aren't brothers, theyre cousins. Common mistake. Todd just made his 1st SX night show last week, which was awesome to see.

As far as Colorado, the main one I would have to put out there is Kyle Summers. Kid is ridiculously fast any time he throws a leg over a bike, but through a few big crashes ( I think he has broken his femur 2x) and some unfortunate circumstances has never done much on the national circult. He did do really well riding the WORCS series for a couple years, He did have a 9th overall at Lakewood in 09 though riding for Valli,

Sure do. I remember Kirk too.
I worked for the guy who ran Ross downs for about 15 years at Village Creek MX. He owns that now after running Mosier Vally for many years.
