So, I signed up for my first mx race ever. Swapmoto series triple crown (statefair mx) nov22.... any tips for +30 Beginner racing??.... Mind you i've been a professional practice rider since i was 15 and only have like 3 legit gatedrops, but those were back in like 08-09 at milestone when they did mock races.

Just signed up and im already more nervous, than bmx racing/mtb racing lol

You’ll be alright. Get a nice inside gate, hold a tight line in the first corner and have fun.

I see a lot of new racers start banging bars and panic sandwiched in the crowd

Practice your starts. Do you have a holeshot device? Make sure you get some seat time before the race especially some figure 8s and starts. How is your fitness?

Hold your line, focus on what’s ahead not what’s behind. Smile, have a beer, go home and touch your Willy

Wait 15 years of riding experience practicing but entered 30+ beginner? If you can jump everything at the track you’re going to then you probably will smoke all the “beginners” by 20 seconds or more. Lol.

Nice, I am hoping to be there too. SwapMoto runs a great program. I need to get out and ride State Fair. Haven’t been there since it first opened. And the number one rule is to have fun! We aren’t getting rich doing it

Nothing anyone says is really going to help you. You just need to get out there and get some gate drops under your belt. You learn so much in your 1st few races it's crazy.

Have fun. Stick the corners. If you can corner and use your front brake you’ll destroy the beginner class.

Just have fun, and make friends! Its customary for your first race to bring beer for everyone after the race. 🍻

Being nervous is part of the fun. Embrace it. Face your fear head on. You’ll feel like a new man afterward.

Congratulations on entering your first race! Racing is addicting and gives you a goal and reason for practicing.

First off be confident in your skills. Keep your nerves in check by not setting ANY expectations on finish position and treating it like a practice session. Wear earplugs to increase your focus. If you do find yourself in a good position enjoy it! If not don't worry...

Hold your line over the jumps and try not to let your adrenaline cause you to ride over your head (easier said than done). Don't follow the rider in front of you, deliberately go where he doesn't, this will keep you out of trouble if he crashes. It is also a good habit to develop for passing. Don't EVER touch your front wheel to the rear of anyone's bike, you WILL go down.

Like OP said you need gate drops to gain experience riding bar to bar in a pack of riders. Good luck and have fun!

Have fun, keep it on two wheels and stay safe! That’s all that matters. How you finish doesn’t matter.

X2. If you can, try practicing your starts with some friends. I know a guy just like you who decided to finally line up and he stalled it out the gate because he said being next to all the other bikes he couldnt hear his own rpm at all and had know idea whether he was gonna loop out or stall😂 he had done a few by himself and was relying on listening to the rpm, no bueno. after that it should be smooth sailing for you in the beginners, you’ll get comfortable pretty quickly as you can see the guys around you are only human too

Your heartrate is gonna skyrocket from nerves thus leading to premature arm pump. Just try to relax and RIP it!!!!

Had a few vet buddies line up after many years of not riding and racing. They were very nervous on the gate. I would simple tell them, "when that gate drops, ride your motorcycle like you know how"

My advice for your first ever one is to fuck the start, let everyone get the jump, ride round the first corner at the back then take it like practice session, you’ll pick people off and work your way up building confidence.
Then race two, id take part in the start.

Have fun! Racing is awesome.
Make sure you've prepared all the practical stuff before race day. Food, hydration, bike, gear, paperwork... That way way all you have to focus on is riding and fun

It never gets old. Anyone know what track this is? Where Brandon is how? Who took the video? I guarantee you someone was at that race has a vitalmx account Laughing
Every time someone posts this, I watch it again; And literally laugh out loud (like a moran) at the ending. First time I ever saw it was (either on Vital or TT) in response to the question "At what point do you know if you have what it takes to be a top MX rider?" Someone's clever response was embedding the video with "Some realize it sooner than others."

Good luck on the first race. My first actual MX race was when I was about 35. Didn't realize any sport could be that much fun.

I really like wearing ear plugs to help me focus on myself rather than what's going on around / behind me. Without them I end up with overthinking and riding like a spaz. Plus it helped me keep my breathing in check which helped not get pumped up as quick. Just go out with the goal of having fun, and make sure to have a few cold ones in the cooler for the reward.

I have given this tip to first time racers for as long as I can remember. Line up anywhere you want. DO NOT try to get the holeshot. Instead, let everybody go then start chasing. Working your way through the pack teaches you much more than potentially wadding it up in the first corner. Practice your starts. Watch lots of starts. Once you have a few races under your belt and lots of practice starts you will be ready to go for the real thing. I also like to tell beginners to line up next to the dog house to give themselves a couple of extra feet in elbow room.

Another tip for you, don’t get locked into following people on the track. In beginner classes, riders have a tendency to have a fair amount of tip overs in corners. Choose your own lines unless you are far enough behind a rider to react if he goes down.

Try to take it easy and breath properly. You will be surprised how tired you get after 2 laps due to race excitement. Be ready for this and keep pushing when it happens. Don't give up....keep pushing through

Get ready to be addicted to racing. Nothing anyone tells you will stop the butterflies and nerves, especially once you're sitting on the starting line. Once the gate drops though it all goes away. The breathing and relaxing advice is good once you get going (to help stop forearm pump, etc) because as Moto520 says, you'll be way more exhausted after "racing" a couple of laps than what you are when you practice a couple of laps. In turn 2 I literally say to myself out loud "breathe". Once you're loading up at the end of the day and heading out you're going to realize how much fun you had. First or last - doesn't matter. You competed, you accomplished something, and you'll be hungry for more.
