Beagle Added a reply to Honda CR ELECTRIC PROTO in All Japan Motocross Championship 2023 Round 8, Saitama
10/6/2023 4:43am Awesome news. It's been teased, first as Mugen, then as Honda, since 2017. Can't wait to see where they're at 6 years later. I guess that with the Varg commercialization they finally found the need for more communication about their electric effort. Direct competition with ICE is the way to go, now that the Stark Varg has got podiums in...

10/5/2023 11:22am HRC developed the CR electric in 2017/2018, they applied for 4 patents in Japan, in 2020 they applied for the same patents in the US... https://patents.google.com/patent/US20200101833A1/en https://patents.google.com/patent/US20200130498A1/en https://patents.google.com/patent/US20200130515A1/en https://patents.google.com/patent/US20200204043A1/en The team that developed the bike, the inventors... have been disbanded, team members have recently been listed in patents for other projects applied for by Honda. If Honda follows historical form, they will apply for other patents in Japan before they release a production model.

10/5/2023 11:20am I'm not so sure about that. The prototype we saw from Honda and Yamaha (which I believe was some sort of partnership with another company) was just an existing chassis from a gas bike, with an electric motor shoved in there. Stark at least appears to have designed the bike ground-up around the battery and motor. And it seems like so far the reviews claim that they nailed the handling and ergos. I think that is super impressive. I'm not saying the traditional brands can't do something similar but we don't know. The Stark seems way ahead of what we've...

10/5/2023 5:26am The RC-E was a beautiful concept bike but again, no specs were released and I've never seen any vid of the bike running. The Mugen Shinden was a proper prototype, racing TT zero during the Tourist Trophy, from 2012 to 2019 (when the electric race was shut down). In those 8 years it won the event from 2014 to 2019...

10/5/2023 3:32am I have been involved with this 'side project' from Yamaha. Based on an excisting YZ frame, a (battery technology) startup company developed this electric bike: https://www.emx-powertrain.com/ This project in already running for over 3 years, and I think it looks pretty cool. But looking at the specs, the Varg is already outperforming and the EMX XF30 is not even on the market.

10/5/2023 3:31am Cool, I did not know this one. Seems like a nice bike but yeah, not released yet and already rendered obsolete by the Varg (the Varg is 3 kg heavier with 40% more battery and twice the power for 500€ less), that must be tough for them.

10/4/2023 3:40pm Ok I'm trying to follow you here, so you're thinking KTM could easily build a Fr eeride E with three times more power and 70% more battery capacity for the same weight and price tag as the one they are selling right now? And they chose not to because... the world is not ready for electric dirt bikes more powerful...

10/4/2023 2:12pm Honda (Mugen) bikes rode couple laps between Japan championship mains, maybe you could find it from youtube still. That was maybe 3? years ago they did look decent like Alta at time but nothing like Stark even test riders werent (allowed?) pushing fast pace.

10/4/2023 2:12pm Thanks for that, I had no idea it had really spun wheels on a track ! Found a vid of the Honda from 2019. Another vid I think is from 2021 Sugo round for japanese championship, the Mugen was running laps during lunch break. Then apparently the Honda was still on display for some event at Suzuka in 2022. https://fr.motocrossmag.be/index.php/2022/11/une-honda-cr-electrique-ap…...

10/4/2023 1:09pm Now if you're risk averse you'll probably wait for one of the established OEMs to offer their own Varg-killer. Just know that you may be possibly waiting for more than a couple of years. Let's take a look at the full size electric bikes by big OEMs and compare them with the Varg. KTM Freeride E-XC 24 hp / 18...

10/4/2023 12:37pm Somewhere buried in one of the Varg threads someone already refered to the diffusion of innovation theory, depending on your risk tolerance, skepticism and aversion to change, you'd fall into one of these 5 categories: innovator, early adopter, early majority, late majority, laggard. Depending on your age when did you get your first microwave / VCR / DVD player /...

10/3/2023 12:31pm Got my shipment email as well today! I'm guessing that they are probably shipping this large order by ocean so it will likely be a few weeks until any of us see our bikes, but damn am I excited! Gonna order a new set of gear to match just so I can be "that guy" we all make fun of and look factory on the new bike

10/3/2023 11:57am I ordered mine on launch day within a few hours of release. I can't remember the initial delivery date but most of this year it was saying August 31st. In mid-July I got a call from a US regional sales guy saying I could expect an email requesting final payment soon and that the bike would ship within a month after payment was complete. After not getting the email over the next 4 weeks I emailed Stark and they responded that I would be getting the payment email very soon they were just working through some additional small delays and...

9/30/2023 11:33am I wouldn't expect the electric bikes to bring down the price of other EMX bikes, in fact I expect the opposite - or status quo at best. I could see EMX bikes reducing sales of ICE bikes which could bring down the prices of those bikes due to supply and demand. I had the chance to ride a Stark Varg a month back on a MX track. Took a couple laps to get used to no foot back brake, but once I got comfortable with that I really liked the bike. I'd love to have one. I wouldn't sell my...

9/30/2023 7:02am I think electrics will come to competition pretty fast, I mean they're already scoring podiums and top 6 in UK and France championships in a handful of races. Sure AMA and MXGP will take more time but once electrics become regular podium contenders in more national championships, and when they will also represent a significant volume of sales (compared to...

9/29/2023 10:35pm It seems possible that they ran into a production snag of some sort midsummer. Has the motorcycling community ever had such a magnifying glass on a brand new manufacturer? This is due to their pre-order approach, but still, it's an interesting case study to watch. It stinks you had you money tied up for so long, that wasn't right, hopefully that sort of thing is a blip on the radar. Prototyping and retail sales are 2 totally different animals each with their own challenges.
