So a guy from Canada says the move would be "corny" and in your mind that is "hate" from americans. Perfectly on brand.

This notion that Euro/non-American riders come to the US and fail at supercross is just a myth.

Um, I never said non-American riders couldn’t win at Supercross. Of course they can and have done so. My point was that a number of highly talented overseas riders came here and had their progress—and ultimately their results, limited by injuries during the transition.

Albertyn is a pretty clear example. Three world titles coming in, then dislocated shoulders at the SX opener in both ’95 and ’96 and a brutal run of injuries. Eventually winning the ’99 outdoor title doesn’t erase how rough that transition was.

Searle, Tonus, Townley and Metcalfe also come to mind, although their circumstances differed somewhat. Townley winning a regional SX title doesn’t mean injuries didn’t prevent him from achieving considerably more afterward...

Your list shows the success stories. It doesn’t disprove the injury-disrupted careers. Those two things can both be true.

That comparison would be necessary if I’d claimed overseas riders get injured at a higher rate than Americans. I didn’t.

I said a number of talented, very capable overseas riders had rough, injury-disrupted transitions to American SX that limited what they achieved. Obviously American riders have had careers derailed by injuries too.

We’re discussing the transition from GPs to American Supercross. Learning SX is difficult, and given this kid’s crash history, I think injury risk is a legitimate concern. That’s an opinion about his prospects, not a statistical claim about nationalities.

Listing overseas champions doesn’t address that concern. I’ve clarified my point; happy to leave it there.

I like it, let him get some SX race development, move into MX full time in the same year. Hopefully keep him healthy as he moves to SX. Plus so many of the guys in SMX Next are his age anyway.

Ok.   I’ll finish off by saying you listed five from the last 30 years who struggled, including one who actually earned a 250SX title.

I agree with you - learning SX is difficult.

For Sacha Coenen the risk of injury while racing is a legitimate concern, as it has been for the last four years since entered MX2.

SMX Next is the same idea as what was tried with 125SX when it was first introduced in 1986, and we all know how that turned out. This thing is just going to evolve into a 3rd pro class with a messy arbitrary "point out" system. I wish the powers that be in this sport would stop trying to blur the line between amateur and pro, but I'm guessing there are monetary reasons for them not to do that.

Wrong, I agree you should but you can drop down a class from harescramble to mx

Yeah but heaven forbid one suggest they should have just stayed another year or 2 in Europe and do more and more select SX and SMX rounds in US each year before a full move. All this latest changes to classes they’ll race is due to them simply NOT BEING READY FOR SMX. I didn’t say outdoors but SX and Post Season. And in the meantime they left KTM up shit creek in Europe in terms of talent and now USA will have both Lucas, Jorge and Chase. Wtf 🫪🤣

My response was only to this portion of the previous message "He has access to the best SX tracks, trainers and coaches." and I was simply trying to convey that the top Am prospects have that same access to facilities, teams, trainers, etc. Baumer, Danger Boy and Cole Davis all were training at the various factory facilities when they won SMX.

Having said that, I agree that his speed and ability is already more then proven - but then so is also the history of European riders coming over here and getting hurt when they try to ride Supercross for a few seasons and ultimately not living up to potential...

I agree with this, with on caveat - the evolution of the sport of SX has made it more competitive than ever before, so I'd argue that it's probably more difficult than it was years ago.  That won't prevent the Coenen brothers from rising to the top given their obvious talent (although I, along with Roger, worry about Sasha being a little to throttle happy).

Sacha needs to figure that out.

But, that doesn't make it OK for him to race amateurs.  He's a top level pro with wins in AMA Pro Motocross and MxGp.  He has no business in any amateur class whatsoever. None

What do they mean transition to 250 East?  They don't normally predict which coast they will run 14 months in advance, so could they be saying he will race SMX next on the 250 west round in 2027 (A2) and start 2027 Supercross on the East Coast at round 5 (Tampa)?  That would give him a live race at A2 before the East coast season starts.  It would be a weird way to word it if so...  So maybe it really means he is not running pro SX in 2027, which does seem kind of odd

Actually, yes, that is what he was saying but also said it's ALL unconfirmed.

Would be kinda funny if 1 or 2 of the smx next kids straight up beat him in a few rounds.

Yes I don’t think it would be a big surprise if Malinoski or Wey would beat him the first round or 2.

I think he should've raced the pro national and not SMX Next.

He's racing SMX Next again next year. I understand the lack of SX experience, but not when it comes to MX.

I guess you ride what you're told.

I understand the logic behind the choice but don't really respect it. Definitely not the best optics to start off the US chapter of Sacha's career.

He can learn the craft on practice tracks and race whichever regional series at whatever time he and his team feels he’s ready. So a rider that won a national by 20+ seconds is going to line up against a B rider… sounds fair to me.

Didn't he win by 33 seconds or something like that at Southwick?

He can just not be a pro for SMX---same as LL...Like Osborne was a pro, retired, then became an amateur to race LL amateur event for a week, then the next week a pro again.

Apparently can be whatever you want ...

b. Participation in or advancement to a higher class in any AMA or non-AMA Off-Road meet by any rider will result in permanent advancement to that higher class in all AMA-sanctioned Off-Road competition. Off-Road racers will ride all Off-Road meets in the highest classification earned. Off-Road includes Enduro, Hare Scrambles, Desert Scrambles, Grand Prix, Cross Country, Hare and Hound and like type meets.

c. Riders who race in MX and Off-Road ( including, but not limited to, Enduro, Hare and Hound, Hare Scrambles, Hard Enduro, Grand Prix and Vintage Hare Scrambles) and have different classifications in each type of racing may not vary more than one level.

OK I was wrong as far as offroad to MX. No mention of MX to SX. Looks like MX is all lumped into one?

b. Participation in, or advancement to, a higher class in any AMA or non-AMA activity by any rider will result in permanent advancement to that higher class (in like activity) in all AMA-sanctioned competition. (Like activity = MX to MX or Enduro to Enduro, etc.

I get that the powers that be are trying to grow the sport from the amateurs up but to me the system has been broken for decades. I feel if you race at the amateur level once you race even one pro level race of SX 250 or 450 and the same for MX you can't go back and race any amateur events. Either your good enough for the pros or you not. You need to be sure that when you make that jump your ready. No going back and forth.

Um....didnt a "retired" pro just race a amatuer national then race a pro national after?

Def agree the whole amatuer & pro thing is broken. Sort of like college sports, if you are getting paid seems that would make you a pro.  In our sport, top amatuers get bikes, RVs, mechanics etc... and pro's priviteers buy their own stuff. Makes you wonder?

Riding in a stadium filled with people will really be the only " new" thing for Sacha.

They have been coming to the US  in the off season for years now. I doubt KTM would sign them to ride SX and not have ever allowed them to ride on their SX tracks. If the rules allow it, and KTM thinks it will help. Great. But I really don't see it helping him much if he's not willing to relax and not take the big risks he seems to take.

It will give him a practice race so that he has a better shot at winning his "first"  pro SX if that's a stat he's after. I really don't think  allowing him into the class is in the spirt of the  class. He is already used to racing or has raced in front of big crowds more than any of the futures racers have. That and the intensity of a real race, is really the only difference between practice laps and a race.

I know Deegan rode a few Nationals and then did the SX futures/SMX next thing, and other riders have too. But I don't know of any others who have already won  races in Pro motocross and or MXGP. Winning races should disqualify a rider from doing SX futures. Its really not an Am class, Its a class that's setup for the teams to be able to test riders out in a race environment so maybe it is in the sprit of the class.

don’t the rules dictate that he has to run smx next to earn 4 points or something like that… or did that change after baby deegs had to do the same thing?

Maybe I'm forgetting, but i think the only serious injury Sacha has had in recent years is the broken collarbone, and he kept racing.

Question for the people who think Sacha racing SMX Next is a good idea:  If Lucas sits out SX all together, does that mean he can drop down to SMX Next in '28 even though he's likely to have at least a couple of 450 outdoor wins under his belt? He has the same amount of SX experience as Sacha, so where do you stand on that?
