How legit do you consider an SMX title?

It's a great payday for the riders, which I'm all for, but in no way is it a legit title.

Like most sane people, Racer x state David Bailey is a 3 Time Champion.

250cc, 500cc and 250 sx. Nobody cares to reference his Grand National Championship.

Bailey is a 4 time champ. not including the grand national titles he won in 83 and 84.

1983 SX and 250MX champ

1984 500MX champ

1986 500MX champ

Short and sweet....

Mav nailed it.

Would be cooler if they just named a grand national champion which is SX and mx points combined, added back the 12th national, and then had a monster cup style race as a finale/ money race

Selfishly, I love that we have races to watch but I totally understand why riders and teams don't like it. It is gimmicky and should not be included in a riders total championships. If anything, so and so could be a 2 times supercross champion, 1 time motocross champion and a 1 time smx finale champion. But in the end, it should be its own category and not combined with Sx and Mx.

but it's funny how backwards things are for us, the season matters, most points at the end of the season is the champion. End of story. And that's how it should be yet NFL, MLB, etc. Is all based on one game at the end of the season. If you ask me, it seems backwards for them. Everyone has a bad day, bad game, bad circumstances, whatever and to decide who the champion is based off one game is kinda bullshit imo.

I think it would be way cooler if it was more like an end-year wrap up like NASCAR. However… 10 rider gate for the final three rounds.

If you win the championship in those three races you will have earned at least $7500 per lap raced!

Hmmm, I would put it above the AMA indoor series championship, just not THE AMA indoor series championship. I don't think an Arenacross championship is as prestigious.

Its a series of real races, albeit short, and means something. But it should not be counted in with a riders total championships. If they want to count em separate fine, but smx title < mx or sx title.

Just looking for personal opinions here.

Does an SMX title really count for breaking the Pro-Circuit dry spell?  Kitchen?  Ryder D, Prado?   Deegan’s 4 tiles vs 6?  ect…

For me…imho…With 3 races and gimmick points it doesn’t count any more than a Monster Million/U.S. Open….therefore not a legit break of a dry spell or for total titles.  If Feld can fix the format/venues/track then maybe I reconsider in the future….but probably not.

All jmho…so remain calm.

It’s not the same as a sx or mx title but definitely better than a monster cup title to me.

1.  Sx
2. Mxgp

3. Mx

4. Smx

Lets put it this way, it shouldn't even be in lists like this. It should be in the same category as Monster Cup, RBSR, Bercy etc.

Race wins are legit, titles are not.

The more the talking heads on tv push it and try and legitimize it the more meaningless it becomes to me. We don’t need playoffs, we don’t need to be like other sports, and the fact that we’re not is why I’m here. They will eventually loose their core fans if they continue to try and “manufacture”excitement.

If you’ve won neither a SX or MX title in that same year, yet are crowned the SMX champion, you are not a champion in my eyes.  Sorry, it really isn’t a championship. True champions endure the test of time.

It’s a chance for riders to pad their bank accounts. Title is meaningless.

I think this should be counted as an also won on rider stats, not lumped in with national championships.

You would have to put it as the highest paid series of all time in moto BUT you had to do all the other series just to get into that series!

No one seems to care that you have to do all the qualifiers to get into to Lorettas……for free!

The force branding hurts its image a lot. Like others, I think it’s slightly above winning the MEC. I think it needs to be harder to qualify for (meaning less riders) and there should be some sort of elimination of riders after each round.

Maybe something like only the top 20 of combined points (250 and 450) make round one and you just eliminate the last 5 positions each round so it's a 10 rider gate at round 3. No LCQ's. I feel like scraping down to 50th place in points just so you can have a 9 rider LCQ where 5 of them make the main doesn't really scream prestigious. Make it harder to get in and eliminate riders if you want it to be "playoffs" they want this to be our "Super Bowl" I don't think half the field should be getting lapped at the finale.

SMX Next can be the second class of the event that races each round without eliminations just so there’s some more racing in between the main class.

Just the Same as the triple crowns, nothing at all.

Cool for the riders. Glad they get paid.

Feel like it'll eventually lead to 20SX races a year and 10 nationals if not more (worse) so.

Oh, and regional supercross titles don't count either... no-one says RC has 17 titles. He's a 15 time champ.

We know what some riders think about it. Would like to get more riders input. Lawrence wasn't too interested.

Its nice to have three more races. Was talking to some non-moto guys and they actually knew about the playoffs. So its somehow bringing a little attraction to the sport which is always good.

But it doesn't mean much in my opinion.

Not only is it not legit, but even asking the question is a problem, because the question alone implies ambiguity....and there is no ambiguity. I also hate the "SMX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP" part, it's just dumb overselling of a thing that isn't a "world" anything.

Since MXGP and US outdoors wrap up within a few weeks of each other, and since MXON has turned into a shitshow on the US side of things, I think it makes the most sense for MXON to be the last round of MXGP and US outdoors, like an east/west showdown, or for locals the old TransCal north/south showdowns. And both MXGP and US promoters can shave a round off their respective series' so that the racers aren't completely burnt on a new bogus microseries that they cough didn't ask for cough. And maybe there's a way for the SMX to insert itself into the US/MXGP/MXON showdown round to help make sure the riders get paid. That would turn SMX from a joke, to a moto-hero.

in truth, there are about 5 million reasons why it is legitimate, Prestigious is a different question.

Legit or not, it pays a lot. The factory guys don’t need it, which is why they’re bellyaching.
