Chest protector with shoulder protection worth it?

Looking into getting a new chest protector and I am wondering if getting one with shoulder protection would actually help prevent shoulder/collar bone injuries. The padding on the ones that do have some shoulder protection looks very minimal, like it would essentially do nothing during a hard crash. I have separated both shoulders in the past and the more I think about it, padding probably would not have helped, as it seems like it’s not the impact, but more the force moving your shoulder out of place.

Prob wouldn’t do much for separations or dislocations or even the collarbone for that matter. I think it would dissipate some energy if you land on your shoulder and I’ve smacked mine off some trees in the woods and was glad I had shoulder protection on for that.

I fell a couple years back, not all that fast either.  Landed on my shoulder.  Ended up with a sore shoulder for a while.  I bought a chest protector with shoulder protection, Fox R3 Roostguard.  After wearing it a few times kinda figured might not help all that much so quit wearing it and went back to my old one.  Fox without shoulder guards.

I also have a Fox air frame which I’ve never wore.  Kinda bulky and heavy and hot  but seems like it would provide good shoulder protection, good all around protection.  Might use it cold weatherp off-road, trails etc but I mainly go to MX tracks.

Yeah I use to think shoulder pads would help prevent shoulder injuries but now I’m kind of rethinking that. I’m sure it may help keep you from getting a sore shoulder after a minor crash, but wouldn’t be enough to prevent an actual injury.

Alpinestars Tech Air MX inflates around the shoulder. Expensive, but really nice.

Alpinestars Tech Air is the only real option IMO.  Most chest protectors are for roost guard and punctures.  Not a ton of protection against serious impact but also not zero (again MOST chest protectors, not all)

My son and I wear the Cased inner protector under our jerseys. The front covers all major organs and follows your rib line, so it leaves your stomach open to roost. That's the only negative I've found, but since they're an MTB company, they must not have considered roost in the design phase.

Full back,  shoulders, and front are all CE level 2 impact, and you'll never stop all shoulder/collarbone injuries, but you can't convince me that having your shoulder wrapped in CE level 2 won't at least help minimise some impacts. They're also on a never-ending discount special for $99, so you can't beat that price, and fit and feel are awesome, IMO.

If you get one, I'd recommend the Alpinestars A10. Just got one and I forgot I had it on while riding today

Fox Still Sells this. Its no longer $100 even though it hasn;t changed since 2000. The shoulder protection has saved me in a airborne situation.

I wish Acerbis still made the Zoom .

Netted Shoulders and side / kidney protection made it so good.

+1 on the Fox Raptor. The shoulder protection has been used by me. The wrap around rib protection has "not really" been used by me (thankfully). The tighter collar area is the potential benefit that is the reason I bought it. Had a chest protector with a more open collar area. Cooler, more comfortable, etc. No protection when my helmet slammed into and broke my collar bone. Would the Fox have saved my collar bone? Don't know for sure, but there is much less space available for a helmet to do it again.

Not necessarily true.  The CE level 1 and 2 stuff can absorb a big impact.  I've been wearing this A-6 for years and have thoroughly tested it.  It's level 2 front and back and level 1 shoulders.  The shoulders are easily removed in times that you don't want to run them.  I'm waiting for my tech air to come in but there are many good options that do really help with big impacts and this one in particular is very low profile and flows air really well.

Appreciate all the feed back guys, Ideally I’d like something I can run under my jersey but I’m a pretty big guy and a 2xl jersey is already tight.. so besides an under jersey protector making me look even bigger, I don’t know if there would be enough room under my jersey for one.

To me it's not even bout the big hits, it's nice to fall and not have a rock or something hit a bone, I kinda think of it like knee pads, and boots.

If you're serious about protecting yourself while riding get a Tech Air. It's a big investment but like others in here have said, most of these modern day "chest protectors" are just for roost and offer zero shoulder protection. Going back to the Tech Air, there's nothing like having full shoulder, collarbone and neck protection without actually having to ride with it.

That's pretty similar to the A10
