How is a racer supposed to decide in a split second if it’s ok to jump or not? Last year they made it clear it was a penalty under no uncertain terms. Now it’s a grey area. Not a big deal for many, but for Eli, Hunter, Webb it could decide a championship. They really need to clear this up before the next race, riders should refuse to race until they do unless they feel they understand the rule and how it will be enforced.
I can’t believe u people are still making such a big deal out of this. Seems pretty simple to me, Jo fucked up. There was no flag so he could’ve jumped. Brown saw no flag so he jumped. Man people love to whine and complain. Jo knows how fast he was going I’m sure he’s already moved on. All of you rules analysts should too
Hope I see him at a race this year so I can boo him to his face

At the risk of sounding uninformed, who is that?
Mike Pelletier (sp?) of the AMA.
Let's see, Red Bull rider loses to Monster rider because of AMA decision. Tell me again who sponsors this SX series...
So how do you explain the decision in the 450s where the red cross flag was shown and they jumped on it?
Oh, Feld's errand boy. That explains the worship of money now.
There is no confusion. That pages clearly says "no double, triple, etc..." under a red cross flag OR flashing red light.
The AMA just shit the bed on this. Period, end of story.
They just simply need to give Jo the points.
At this point I doubt even Star Yamaha would bitch about that.
The stupid fucking betting maybe?
Wow the idiots at the ama give the worst decision ever....... Im sorry there is just no excuse for this.
Bobby Regan did 9/11
The problem seems to be that riders has been informed pre-season + during riders meeting that the one before finish line jump, is only a warning light (before season=some will have that function).
I can see where AMA is coming from, but it's been made to complicated + function not expressed in rule book.
1. Last year, the light on the double would have been Orange, warning only. They changed it to red because complaints about visibility in sun and instead they inform on riders meeting about the function.
So shimoda could and should have jumped.
2. In the 450, the implemented the red as a compliment to certain jumps where they feel like you might not have a chance to see the flag, or to late, because you are pre-committed. This was clearly such a place since so many missed it in 450. They then say "the warning wasn't on, and riders expect that, so we can't penalize them".
For me it makes sense. We have not been to the pre-meeting before season and neither at riders meeting on Saturday.
The mistake AMA has made, is made it to complicated and also not putting everything in writing it seems.
But from a decision standpoint, they seem to be doing the right thing from what riders have been told.
If so, they've not set a precedent. You can jump on flashing red lights.
So, the “warning” light is “warning” that the red cross flag MIGHT be waving at the next blind jump? And it’s up to the racer to decide whether to risk injury and/or penalty or loss of position? Is that right?
Pit Row
We know what's written in the rule book... But that's not actually the rule. Got it.
The only thing I can figure from reading that rule is the AMA is now using the lights in multiple ways, they are FLASING or just ON. In my opinion, this is way too complicated and causes confusion. Supercross uses a flag system, and these flags have certain meanings, then they added lights on the triples (either red or yellow) to try to prevent something bad. But now the lights are everywhere and can mean multiple things? RED is RED and YELLOW is YELLOW. If the AMA is about to explain what I think they're going to, they should have had a flagger waving a YELLOW flag out of the corner.
Another complicated issue that could be solved with in helmet comms
Yes correct, same as yellow light has been previous years. It's a yellow flag.
As race director myself, there might always be exceptions informed and enforced during race day. If riders are informed, it's fine. Of course, we don't know the details on this.
This is why not only riders should be at riders meetings.
Welp, with six figures on the line (seven for the championship), it’s a no brainer: screw the warning light.
50% of the time the rules apply everytime!

If what you're saying is true, then I "technically" get it, but that is a confusing rats nest of technicalities. No jump on red, unless it's flashing and in this one certain spot? Why not just have the lights blink in Morse code to let the rider know which by-law that isn't in writing but was verbally told to them they should follow before they click third before a 3 in?
The exception to the written rules we clearly stated in passing on track walk definitely leave no grey area!
I hate to think this but the 450 championship gets significantly less interesting if Webb Kenny and Eli are all docked 5 points.
My understanding is, it's 1-2 places on the track where they specifically has that function and it is discussed during riders meeting and also lights are on during first lap of practice. Maybe fixed or blinking always when used.
It's a bit like having a yellow flag with or without a red cross a few feet's or small jumps behind, you might be able to jump but it's situational.
Anyway needs clarification.
If it blinks 3 short flashes and 1 long, it means you're in trouble and must report to the race director. If it flashes 1 long and 3 short, your order is ready at the snack shack.
