Damn
Funniest post ever.
And…severely ironic.
🤣
Not long after I started riding back in the 80s I was on a 1986 KX125 and a friend who raced hare scrambles and enduros talked me into entering a race in Maxey's GA. I was in the beginner 200 class, most of the line was KDX200s, IT200s and a couple XR200s. I was the only rider on a full on motocross bike. Probably the only rider without steel bark busters too.
When the gun fired I was first to start my bike and pulled a massive holeshot, and I'm not even sure how being new to racing. So we are going down a long hill (on a grass field) then hook left to continue around the edge of the wood line. A bit later the red arrows pointed right into the trees. They were far apart from each other and the terrain was smooth so I held on to the lead. The course went a bit to the left and started running parallel to a deep gully. Just ahead there were red X signs and arrows pointing down and right. Looked like we were going down into the ravine. My bike had plastic hand guards, no bark busters. Just before going over the ledge my front brake lever tapped a tree, locked my front wheel and jarred my handlebars.. I went ass over elbow down into the ravine which was about 10' to the bottom. By the time I picked myself up I was in last place. I finished the race that way, and was so incredibly tired and beat up!
TL;DR: I holeshot my first race ever then ragdolled spectacularly
Dungey hand shifting midair at the 2012 Monster Cup is the best one that I haven't heard anyone already mention.
I guess mine would be watching stew on a 250 try and keep up with Ricky on a 450 at Binghamton . I didnt even know it was possible to ride a bike that hard . The entire pipe either purple or blue.

Georges Jobe jumping over Andre Malherbe at the 1984 500cc Grand Prix at Hawkstone Park.
I was commissioned to paint this iconic image and owner Alan Bott decided to give it to Georges. We travelled to Belgium to present it as Georges was diagnosed with Leukaemia and took the painting to hospital to give himself strength.
In person: Webb hunting down Roczen and executing a last corner pass for the closest SX finish in history.
As a viewer: LaRocco holeshots and wins the Indy SX. That place came unglued…
Stayed at Steve Bruhn's (TFS) the factory spectators apt in Pittsburg, went to Steel City and saw Carmichael step down to the 125!
Herlings Ironman 2017
I haven’t talked about this in a while but stew & RV scrub and battle at MEC 13’ was a dope send off to the 2013 season
some of you wont understand how much this meant to the MX community in AUS.

That entire race was incredible. They both put on an absolute clinic on how to ride a dirt bike fast, but Stew cutting under RV going into the lefthand sweeper going over the hill just outside the stadium, seemingly without even slowing down, was on another level..
Agreed, something 99% of the Aussie moto community thought could never happen.
Taking second in Amateur AX in 40+ after Baltimore, Hampton and Youngstown then going to Vegas to race at Sam Boyd on the day before the pro race for the finals. My leg was completely messed up and I got like 12th and it was super-windy and tough, but it was an amazing experience. Racing on the track itself will give you completely new insight to what it's like.
I have quite a few cool moments but probably the most memorable personally is this screenshot of me on a stock KX125 that I bought out of the classified ads a week before the race, alongside David Bailey at the 1985 MXdN. Bailey’s RC500 Inconel exhaust pipe cost more than my entire bike. I finished 6th in class.
Probably as much as 2012 meant to us german fans. 😅
You win 😎
2017 Las Vegas SX. My wife and I were on our honeymoon in Vegas. Luckily, we decided to make the race part of our trip. Osborne's charge to the front and eventual pass on Savatgy was the most incredible moment I've experienced live in any sports venue. We were almost literally in shock. Then you get to the 450 main, and it was just as bonkers but in an entirely different way. That has to be one of the coolest nights in supercross history.
Great and funny story that I totally related to as I had basically the same experience... I think it was 1990 and I was in college. I wanted to race that weekend but had a busy weekend of some college project or exam looming over me. So after finding out there was a local hare scrambles about 5-10 minutes away, I figured that I could maximize the weekend by racing the local hare scrambles instead of driving two hours to a MX race and sitting around all day waiting for motos and still have time for my studies.
At this point I was an every weekend racer in my early 20's, doing pretty well in results and showed up to the hare scrambles on a totally race ready KX-250... As I surveyed my competition of mostly farm boys and some local hare scramble hot-shots- I wasn't very impressed and surely stood out as a pure MX racer in attendance. At that point, I had many years of racing MX and probably viewed hare scrambles racing as just a bunch of guys/girls out riding in the woods.
I was obviously taking the wrong classes in college or should have signed up for the courses called "Never Underestimate Your Competition 101" and "Barkbusters Serve A Very Meaningful Purpose". Beside being used as a battering ram entering the woods, to having the first sapling tree decide to activate my front brake and toss me over the bars for the first of many unexpected trips-- my 2 hours in the woods was a thorough schooling on what I thought would be a scenic trail ride or something. The top guys were insanely fast in the woods and even guys in Carhartt coveralls and plaid flannel shirts weren't to be taken lightly.
I managed to finish- and even tried to intentionally miss the cut-off time for the last lap because my hands had turned to ground beef. However- a slap on the back by the guy at the finish checkpoint telling me to "go get another lap" had me questioning my inner resolve on actually quitting. In the end, I kept plugging away and crashing into trees and I got a plaque for finishing somewhere decent in my class (surprisingly and somehow). I also was in too much paint to do whatever it was I needed to do for school and certainly flunked that one. I do think I ended up getting another needed lesson instead...!! LOL!!

Hannah vs Smith. Mid-Ohio USGP 125. Plus I liberated a wiseco welcome race fans banner.

Check out the thread on garages, that bib Marty is wearing might be on the guys wall.
Today's woods riders are probably on average far better motocrossers than back in the 80s/90s. Cross training is more popular today.
Very nice photo and story, thank you for sharing!

Easily the finest moment in Australian motocross history, also redefining Australia as a hot bed of talent and Jett Lawrence as the new king
Sorry pal, couldn't help but notice. Thanks for the judgement. Danny was permanently disabled by participating in this sport at the highest level, he died while Brad Lackey was trying to raise funds to buy him a mobility van, yet Danny is the only rider to win all four motos of MX and Trophee des nations. You think it's cool to down vote Magoo's accomplishments, I understand what kind of person you are. You think I am a narcissist for not liking people down voting Danny's accomplishments I understand what kind of person you are all the more. Thanks for the enlightenment.
In 1994 I was working at the local newspaper in Bloomington, MN, and volunteered to write the annual “what’s Donny Schmit up to now” story. I called him and mentioned that I had raced D23 since 1977 and he said “I can’t believe I don’t know you.”
A couple of years later I saw Bobby Moore standing alone at a Parts Unlimited Showcase before the Minneapolis supercross and decided that just wasn’t right. We talked quite a long time about Donny and racing/life in general.
For races I’ve competed in, it’d have to be at West Bend, Iowa, where two buddies and I had an epic pair of freight train battles in the 250B class in 1977.
When Kawasaki announced a new two stroke and released it in a timely manner
I think the best day, most badass moment was: Riding one year so much that arm pump became non-existent and that first day of riding so much you ran the tank dry on the bike in your moto. Not tired, not sore. Just riding as much as you could.
Johnny O' jumping HUGE over RJ's head to flat land.. Daytona '86.. or was it Johnny O' jumping over Bailey '85 ? Was incredible at that time.
Post a reply to: What was the coolest/most badass moment for you in Moto?
