The '87 is the unicorn amongst the older crowd.

2005-07; also 1978-79 (works bikes for the public).

00-01 is one of the best engines I’ve ever ridden. Never owned one, but seems like that gem is not nearly as supported in the aftermarket world as the 02-07.

I think the 02-07 was one the best chassis Honda ever built and with some motor work could be made to run much better. The 87 was a great bike as well. The 83 for a not having a PV made great power.

I had an ‘06 and I loved that bike. The chassis was great and could turn under anything I wanted.  Top quality workmanship throughout.  Jetting was temperamental with that Mikuni.  JD jet kit helped but not a cure.  Always wanted to sub a Keihin on it but never got around to it.  I ran 50/50 pump premium and VP C-12 and that got the detonation under control.  Great throttle response with that mix.

Had these

91 - weird motorcycle for me

93 - kicked ass

96 - Kicked ass

2001 - kicked ass

Exclude the 91 and they are in order of preference for me but can see where the 87 was also a bad ass bike.

Because it was released in 1987, not 20 years later.

If Star Wars was released today it would probably go unnoticed, but in 1977 it was so jaw-dropping compared to anything else of the era that it became legendary. That was the situation with the '87 CRs (all displacements) - they were virtual works bikes for the masses.

One of my best friends had the '87 250 and I logged a good number of hours on it and can say without hesitation it has a well-earned reputation.

I owned several '93 250s (and still have a very low hour one) and loved everything about the bike except for the horrid front forks. They were brutal and ricocheted off everything and caused so much head shake it was terrifying at times. It wasn't until I grafted the front end from an '89 KX onto the bike that I understood its full potential and why McGrath loved it so much - they literally transformed it into works bike status.

I've also owned several '03 250s (and like the '93, currently have a low hour one) I love it except for the stock jetting and soft bottom end power delivery as it comes stock. Once you sort the jetting (either with the stock mikuni, which helps but is still very temperature sensitive, or replace it with the  PWK) and give it a little more oomph off the bottom, it's another bike that's hard to find anything to complain about.

I had a couple 86s back in the day. Lovely motor and great forks.  The 86 was the first  Honda with a power valve and cartridge forks. The power valve had to be cleaned often .Like every 5 hrs. At least mine did running mc3 at 30 to 1.Also had an 88. Super smooth motor and handled well. The 87 is regarded as the best of the 80s. I never rode an 87. However they  were supposed to be super fast. First year with rear disc as well.

Every CR250 after 96 was disappointing in one way or another.

Well, it was inarguably the best CR250 of '97.

And also the worst.😁

Probably more of the latter. 😂

It was just a great bike for its time as it did everything really well.  I still have one and it still feels great on the track to this day.
