Moto vs. MTB

8/28/2015 11:23pm
Quit moto and sold my KTM about 5 months ago, but picked up a mountain bike from a friend about a year ago. My mountain bike collects dust in the garage and rarely sees the light anymore, need new friends Woohoo

Give downhill biking a try.
Head to the nearest bike park, rent a bike (you can use your MX gear) and see how you like it.
That's what I did, quit riding MX bikes and started with DH, I can say I will never go back.
It's fun and adrenaline (I would say more fun and adrenaline...), sure you still have to load your bike and head to the tracks, but nothing compared to your YZF.
I don't know what's around your place, but bike parks are usually nice places where you can bring your family and have fun.

I quit riding right before my 2 year old was born. I took up mtb the following year(I had always ridden but this is when I started to take it seriously. This year I decided to race the h2h race series(jersey and new york xc ). I did the first four rounds on a trek stache 6($1600 total investment) hardtail with front shock and was 3rd in cat 2 30-39 pts after 4 rounds. I switched to a single speed(trek superfly ss rigid) after that and did the last two races coming away with a 4th and 3rd in cat 2 ss. I got so much stronger and faster on a single speed in just 3 months on one now. I also run 5-10 miles a couple times a week and road bike once ir twice(usually 40-50 miles). I still invest less time doing all this than I would in a day of moto peep, travel and riding etc. I think i am doing thw yamaha ride day at etown next month though....

Never rode MTBs. Sounds intersting. Just can't see how pedaling beats a motor? Lol

One thing I feel burned out on is my 450 tho. Rode my buds 250f the other week and it was just so much more fun. Think Ima down grade. As I don't race anymore. Just ride for kicks.

Same here. MX getting to be too much of a pain for to little ride time.
Told my wife that if she would ride MTBs with me a lot I'd sell the MX bike.

Hard not to love either sport...Its all about being on two wheels and rippin....I will say that the spots I'm riding my Mtn @bike are breath taking, and are usually world class tourist destinations. But all in all, I'm blessed to just get out there and ride. I'm riding my pedal bike 3-4 times a week(lazy assed lift accessed down hill though) and have only been on a MXer 4 times this year.....I'm not really interested in riding my pedal bike for fitness reasons what so ever, I just like hauling ass either at the ski hill or shutteling with my truck with my Bros. The jumps and drops are super fun, and railing the man made berms is a blast. I'm getting into the choppy nasty rocky/rooty stuff but its really hard on my bike, where as the more man made trails/basically down hill BMX tracks are super smooth and flowy......

Last weekend @ Kicking Horse resort in Golden British Columbia, smoked in by the forest fires in Washington State.

The weekend before @ Buds Creek Maryland...

I bought my wife one this passed spring. A women's specific 27.5" hardtail. Shes not very athletic and crashed hard twice on her first trail ride. Then two weeks later she took a pregnancy test and got the +. I just sold it Monday to a buddys girlfriend. I will get her another one in a year or two.

Dug this old thread up to say I sold my motorcycle yesterday. I did not ride it even once since starting this thread, and to be honest im not bummed even a little. The wife shed a tear, who would have thought.

I called the bike shop right away and ordered a Giant Trance 2. It will be there this coming Friday. I need a large, all he had was mediums. I cant wait to take it on its first ride.

I still do both and MTB is easily the next best thing to MX. I've had two lengthy breaks from moto mainly due to me getting injured or people around me getting hurt. That's what got me into MTB which turned into DH.

A lot of it depends on your friends as well. We used to shuttle our DH bikes everywhere but now no one seems up for that. And the bikes are so good today you don't really need a full on downhill rig unless you are racing DH events. Your average 6" all-mountain bike can pretty much go up or down anything.

I do wish sometimes that I hadn't stopped MX for all those years as I would probably be riding at a much higher level today. When you're off for 5 or more years it takes a while to get back to where you were.

I would sell your YZ250F, pick up a YZ250 ( it's not going to be dated anytime soon, unlike the YZF plus it costs nothing to maintain ) and just do one sport or the other ... or both ... whenever you feel like it.

I'll tell you one thing though, as you get older it's really tough to do both on a w/e. If I do MX on Sat then I've got to fight dead leg for MTB on Sun. And your friends usually have no mercy on you ! haha

Comparing mountain biking to living the motocross lifestyle is like jacking off vs railing a hot chic. I prefer getting out in the outdoors on my mountain bike to going to the gym and I really enjoy it. The only reason I do it though is to stay in shape to ride moto. Intestinal fortitude is not created equal. Some men lose it earlier than others.

She cried out of sadness. I had just got the bike before we met and it was a big part of our lives while we were dating. She would go to the track with me on weekends and hang out under the shade tree at my little practice track almost every day.

Race,

Im gonna hold off on buying another mx bike until my son is old enough to ride so we can enjoy the sport together. He is 12 weeks old today. It will be a YZ250 though, I will probably never own another 4 stroke for myself.

I love MX and Mountain biking! MX more, but Mountain biking is by far my second favorite sport.

I ride MX as often as I can get out to the track, and mountain bike all the time, usually 2-3 times per week. I add in some weight training and it keeps me in shape.

They're both great sports, and I've learned to enjoy climbing on mountain bikes as well. There's a sense of accomplishment when you conquer a new climb, plus the endurance it builds is great.

Plus both sports compliment each other. Mountain biking (especially the fast down hills) improves my line choice in MX, and riding either one, makes me better in both sports.

I wouldn't sell your yzf, you never know, there might be the odd day you want a blast and it won't be there. Plus it's not costing you anything sat there. Get a better mtb, but really are you going to enjoy it anymore? Keep both the same and carry on as you are.

I know this isn't the answer you're looking for but that's what I'd do.

Too late for that, flymoto. Its 300 miles north of me now. I will get a brand new moto next year or so. I have never had a motocross bike fresh from the factory.

Just wanted to share a cool photo that my friend took of me riding a local bike park yesterday. It's not moto, but sure is fun.

Btw. Canyon Torque DH CLLCTV turned out to be a very good purchase.

Edit: My search found a 10 year old thread apparently.  😄

moto is best. But my 150xc is like taking the best 10 min of mtn biking and turning it into 2 hrs.

Yep.  Doing laps on my 150SX is among the funnest things I have done in my life.  MTB is not even close, but I like it anyway.

Maybe you need a 2stroke?

I ride cross country (I push the limits on my 120mm Specialized Epic) to stay in shape for moto. I live a block from some awesome trails with a sweet 2 hour loop. I ride my MTB 1-2 times a week and my motocross bike 2-3 times a month. I stay away from Enduro stuff, risk reward just isn’t there for me. Moto will always just be more fun, but MTB, especially cross country and flow stuff, scratches the itch a bit and I’m much stronger in the motocross bike now.

I mountain bike way way more, mostly due to living in central arkansas with not many moto tracks but an abundance of singletrack. I love it and it saves me from having to go to a gym. However, mountain biking doesn't scare the shit out of me like MX, it's a lot of work, and not as fun. When I get done with a good mountain bike ride, I feel like I got a great workout that had really fun parts. When I pull off a MX track, I feel like I just went skydiving for 30 minutes. I've never met a motocrosser I didn't instantly relate to. We're seriously all the same. I don't think we're born that way (other than whatever is wrong with our brains), I think it comes from having NOBODY in our daily lives who can relate to motocross even a tiny bit. Even people who ride motorcycles but never MX really have no clue. You can throw out the YZF and go MTB only but I predict it's not going to fill the void completely.

I still consider myself a motocross racer and that I use MTB as a training tool. However, I've been really enjoying pedaling over the last several years, and I'm now a semi-serious MTBer. I'll probably never race an enduro, but I sure do like that style of riding.

Without MTB, I'd never have gotten to see any of this:

I don’t really ride my fantastic MX bikes anymore. Even my 450EXC rarely gets ridden.

1. It’s over an hour to pvte ride parks - I intend to go, but never seem to make it.

2. “Practice” at the local track, my favourite, is organised like race day - by class. So start at 06:00 (Arrive/set up), first ride at 09:00, second at 13:00 after lunch, last at 15:30. Each 15-20 min. (Same on race days). I get more track time road racing!

Almost everyday, I put my MTB in my Corolla Wagon, drive 15 min and ride fabulous tracks for an hour and go home.

I wish I had a MX track of my own, I’d ride every day I think. Or “Bush” within easy road riding distance. Modern world.

I did moto my whole life.  I was really pretty good at it.  Had a few bad concussions, kids, and my riding buddies slowly stopped riding.  Got into MTB pretty heavy for the same reasons you listed.  And sold my moto because I just wasn't using it enough, it was expensive and I didn't have time.  That was mid thirties.  I'm 43 and just bought my first moto in 8 years!!  New, for less then a new MTB. Im looking forward to having fun twisting the throttle again.  Going riding tomorrow to break it in.   Sell it if you aren't feeling it.  You can always go get another at some point in the future.  I have gotten pretty damn good on a MTB also.  But it's not the same.

Steep fast natural tech Park DH riding on a big rig is as good as Moto. Racing it is more fun i feel.
You get one race run, after all the practice runs. 3-4 minute run. The pressure on yourself in the gate is crazy. Frenetic but you gotta focus so much otherwise its a weekend all for nothing in a split. Then you check on the timing to see if youre up.

I certainly enjoy moto/moto trails more than MTB, but excellent MTB trails are 6mi from my house, closest Moto trails/track is 60mi.

So it is MTB (or EMTB ) 95% of the time these days.  A good EMTB takes the drudgery out of MTB'ing.

I definitely ride my ebike a lot more than my dirt bike anymore. Tons of great trails in KC and bentonville is less than 3 hours away so I get down there several times a year too.

Not to hijack the thread but this story resonates with what some folks wrote here about what makes MTB attractive to them (grab the bike and ride around the neighborhood whenever you feel like it)

https://www.rideapart.com/features/767642/stark-varg-ex-hoa-dirt-bike-complaints-ev-electric/

Smaller e dirtbikes like surrons could do the trick as well for some, as some kind of intermediate between Moto and MTB maybe?
