Those road race guys all haul ass at moto. Used to see Anthony Gobert turning laps at Perris Raceway on Wednesday afternoons with Jeff Emig back in the day. He wasn’t that far off Jeff’s pace.

He was National Champion in MX before switching to Road Race I believe. A shame he also went the route of hard drugs. RIP

It's usually more a case of moto guys (and dirt track guys) hauling ass in roadracing. They develop a good feel for the edge of the tire and get comfortable sliding at a young age and carry it with them onto the road course. It's a little harder to spot now with all the aero but if you watch some older races you can really see it with MM93, Casey Stoner, Rossi, Hayden (RIP), and a couple of others.
Tomac had mentioned training with Jake Gagne (3x MotoAmerica SBK champ) and how impressed he was that he could hang with his program. Mentioned being at least a top 20 guy right now in moto. Plus, he actually qualified a few years back at Miller. Don't sleep on the pavement guys!

A little more on Anthony. Yes he did some drugs but it was more the depression from not being in the limelight anymore as much as drugs. His bro can chime in and tell you the truth. On another note. I agree that flattrack and roadracing slows moto down. I remember racing an endurance on Saturday at Texas world speedway and went to Cooper land for a state race the next day and my 450 felt like a moped.
A lot of the MotoGP guys train on dirt, Marc regularly puts out videos of him riding moto with other GP guys, but this is the first time he has been on a Ducati. Rossi's training compound also featured a lot of dirt bike training.
Former road racer here, riding dirt made me so much better as a road racer it wasn't even funny. I started on street bikes and moved to dirt bikes and it was definitely a culture shock. Both sports help each other mutually, dirt bikes can't even come close to the speed of road race bikes. Coming off the back straight from nearly 140-150 to 30 mph is an awesome experience, hard to compare to backing it in off a short straight. It definitely slowest stuff down dirt wise because everything comes so fast, and dirt helps you get comfortable with the bike moving and sliding around.
I was wondering when they would boot Marquez off his CRF450R for the Desmo450. 😂

Where Moto helped me for Road racing, I knew I could ride longer and harder.

Jake was an extremely fast mini bike rider on 85 he rode for a shop out in Ramona my son had a chance to be his teammate but they were having a lot of problems with those first KTM 85 hindsights 20/20 LOL that was before Jake went over to do the Red Bull Junior Cup that's when he got noticed he's a super Talent on anything two wheels!

Growing up in the motocross world made me what I was on a road race bike. Learning how to race a road race bike made me ten fold better on a dirt bike. Flat track has helped me a lot as well. I'm a big believer in cross training for fitness and bike skill
I'm surprised more moto guys don't flirt with track days/road racing post-moto careers. Granted I've never been a great moto rider, but I was able to take to road racing very quickly. Took a bit to not ride crossed up though.

I wouldn't say that. The GP guys use MX as a training tool in the offseason (mostly.) I'd bet my life savings on the top 10 motogp riders being much better on dirt than our top 10 guys are on pavement.

What I was saying is many of them started on dirt, were already plenty fast there, and carried that to road racing. Several examples posted above by others.
I wouldn't sell MX guys short either, other than the fact they don't seem to cross over to road racing much compared to the road racers who ride dirt in one form or the other all the time (not all of them do). I'd think with some seat time the Lawrences could hang just fine.
Jack Miller (Moto Gp) rode a round of the Australian National MX recently. Jack just loves racing. He comes home and races MX, Dirt Track and Superbikes on occasion.
I remember when they had stadium flat track events in Barcelona in the off season. Top American stars like Jared Mees and Brad Baker would race Marc and he often beat them. He's the goat of 2 wheeled sports.
I am sure he be BA!

Jonathan Rea (multi world superbike champ) was a top level MXer before making the switch and won a few UK arenacrosses.
I have done both, one thing I learned from road racing is that every thing slowed down when I came back to motocross.
That and how to use the front brake

There's quite few road racers that are nasty on a dirt bike too. Gagne, Gerloff, Matt Lynn to name a few in the US
Surprised Marc would spend much time on a dirt bike right now. The only thing keeping him from another MotoGP title is an injury.
Gagne rides with Eli. Eli said he Jake would probably be top 20 at a national.

Pit Row
I remember Nicky Hayden coming to West Ky MX and smoked everyone while not doing the worst jumps. His corner speed and lines were amazing!

Riding dirt bikes my entire life definitely helped when riding a zx6 at 120 in the grass and not crashing

Bayle.
Suzuki had Rodger on a 750 smoker for a day some time in the mid 70s and he was apparently up to decent speed pretty quickly.

I think Steve Wise went from Team Honda MX to Team Honda Road Racing in the 70s maybe??
