With Jett out that means Dunge is still the last one to successfully defend his SX title. Crazy how we’ve been on this streak of different champions and him and RV basically went 7 straight.
Dunge, RV and RC are the only ones to defend in the past 24 years.... wild.
Add MC and then it’s the last 30 years
If Jett comes back healthy next year and stays healthy there is a good chance whoever wins this year won't repeat either.
Not only that, but MC, RC, RV and Dunge also won at least 3 straight.

Haha, the delusions of the fan bois are incredible.
He is definitely the favorite to win whenever he is on the gate, but you're alluding to something two years from now....and he's on the couch with a possible career changing injury.
RV is one of the baddest dudes to ever throw a leg over a dirt bike. 4 straight SX Championships, only McGrath did the same. Absolute legend.
"IF Jett comes back healthy"
Little off topic but I never appreciated how good RD was until I saw him ride the 2 stroke at straight rhythm.
I gotta be honest, as an RV and Eli fan, I never really appreciated how good he was at the time either.
I wish he would have just switched teams instead of going to Europe. The guy had basically wrapped up a hall of fame career by the age of 25. He could have realistically been battling for titles until 2021ish
Yeah, the era of the Ryans was pretty cool.
I never disliked RD, but I always wanted RV and ET to beat him because they were my guys. I appreciated RD before, but not like I did after Vegas when he had to hand shift his bike midair.
RV and RC came back from the same injury and won championships so there is no reason to think Jett won't come back from an ACL.
Not sure if you are calling me a Jett fanboi? I am rooting for Chase, but I cannot deny the talent Jett has.
Same! Mostly because Dunge is my all time favorite. I was too busy rooting against him as he beat up on my guy. I'm able to look back now and really appreciate what an absolute monster RV was. I see a lot of fans now slotting in Eli above RV and I completely disagree.
Agreed, Eli is great but RV would've manhandled him in SX. He was just as fast if not faster but was more consistent and stronger mentally than Eli.
Same, I'm a big RD fan so naturally I wanted him to beat RV. But looking back I really appreciate how Villopoto rides a dirt bike.
Listening to the RC podcast with Gypsytales sparked a thought of "If 4 strokes never came who would've been better/worse?" Even though he won a lot, RV probably wins a lot more on two strokes due to his riding style. I also don't think anyone would touch Bubba and Tomac if it were still 2T.
Dunge is the Rodney Dangerfield of moto
Pit Row
Dungey won 3 sx titles in a row. Shows how incredible of a rider he really was.
All this. As fast, better starter, and more consistent. RV was an animal
Him and ET are both beast riders.
Was that the one where tomac won like 14 races and he won two but Dungey still won the title?
Something about that math just bothered me. Still does to be honest.
That was after a broken neck, and he didn't really want to be there. The check still cashed though.
Unfortunately with Eli, there was always a weakness in his overall game that probably earned him less titles than he should have won. It took him a while to actually start winning 450 titles even though he was the fastest guy for so long.
We even still see it today. He’s been probably the fastest and best looking rider for the first 4 rounds and he has 1 podium. It’s insane. He’s had issues like this for his whole career.
RV always had elite speed but also the whole package so Eli never would have beaten him. He was winning titles against Dungey, canard, Reed, and Stewart.
Although to be fair, Reed was a bit older at that point and I think history plays out differently if Stewart never went to Yamaha specifically. They didn’t have a good 450 from 2006 until Star took over and from 2010 it was terrible.
Dream scenario to watch peak Eli and peak RV battle.
The what ifs. If your aunt had balls she would be your uncle.
Who you got? I couldn't bet against RV
I'd have to give the nod to Eli, as far as potential.
RV said, when Stew is on, he couldn't go with him. Now Stew said in a podcast somewhere (can't remember where, maybe his rewinds), that he was worried about Tomac's speed. So logically, that should give Eli the edge.
Same.
I still don't think Dungey gets due credit for 15' and 16' though. The consistency element is tossed around quite a bit.... meanwhile he won more races in those two years than people remember.
"IF" ... the biggest word in the english language
even so won't be Jett
