Is it purely for the sponsorships that Troy will be able to line up for them? Other than that and being able to get stuff over here set up quicker/cheaper I don't see a whole lot of upside to giving up control to TLD and having them run the team, over having a Ducati works team.
Not a troll or rage bait post
Low investment, instant start up, USA based Championship proven management and mechanics, all with ties to vendors, sponsors and family.
If they feel it's not working out there must be contract clauses for this.
I’ll bite-
It’s a whole easier to fund a team and supply bikes/ parts, than it is to run a race team.
Think Star 450 team and HEP Suzuki.
Troy has lots of experience and will do Ducati a lot of good with his experience.
No upside?
Did you see the semi?
Did you see the debut?
Everything the guy touches is first class and sano.
I saw that rig roll in yesterday and my jaw dropped.
He’s had a factory team for multiple years.
I can’t think of a better partner.

Yes the sponsorships deals and presentation are GREAT, especially getting unique sponsors like Atari, Sony, Snap-on, Natures Bakery, instead just Monster or... well thats about it. However, TO ME, Troy doesn't have the expertise of building a race team like Mitch or Bobby Regan do, and that's where I see the downside of the partnership, will it be bad no. I think Triumph is going at it the right way.
Yup, I listed that it'd be easier/cheaper to like you said supply a team, but why give up the control? ESPECIALLY when you're developing a brand new bike and first ever dirt bike for the brand, there will be a disconnect between a customer team and the factory no matter how close the relationship. I could see this hindering quick development of platform, especially in SX.
To me the issue is, how many championships have they got in the last 10 years as a factory team with capable riders? I appreciate its all building for Ducati & this is a cheap quick way of getting started. But what is Ducatis 5 year goal?
US HRC went 20 years without a major AMA title, do you think that was one of their goals? How long was Pro Circuit’s dry spell? It happens to the best in the business.
A large part is probably that he makes the most bitchin looking bikes in the pits. And it's turn key.
Absolutely insane to say Troy Lee doesn’t have the expertise of building a race team. Feel like I’m reading a Reddit post.
Tld like red bikes…
I have to agree, my interpretation of TLD is it’s for the young, ‘funky’ tattooed, almost hipster type people. Baggy jeans, skater shoe, a bit on the wild side. They have for years regarded themselves as the ‘fun team’.
Completely the opposite to what I view Ducati road bikes- for the connoisseur type, wealthy (older?) type gentleman who wears a suit and leather shoes.
This is just my interpretation of it.
*Id buy a Ducati. I wouldn’t be seen dead in skater shoes..
Fashion over function? They will certainly have one of the most attention grabbing teams in the pits that oozes style and attracts eyeballs. Unfortunately, for as long as they have been around, regardless of the affiliated OEM, race wins have been few and far between for the TLD team and they have yet to bring home a title.
Funny, that sounds like my description of BMW 😁
A massive challenge for OEMs, and for motorcycling in general, is to attract younger demographics.
This is also one major reason why Ducati is entering the game, it's a bid to attract younger riders hoping they would later turn towards more expensive street bikes.
No team looked better than TLD Gasgas. TLD Ducati will be sick AF.
Yes I can understand that, and perhaps TLD is the perfect team to change that image.
The want to sign a rider who can test the rev limiter.
Ducati is kicking the ever-loving shit out of Honda/Yamaha in MotoGP and WSBK for years now. You want to better believe they will know the formula to do it in MX/SX soon. That said, they are partnering with Troy because Troy is cool. If you cannot see that, then you are definitely not cool. Ducati is entering the dirt bike market for the same reasons Triumph is, and Honda/Yamaha/Kawasaki/KTM remain, to bring youth to the brand and give "hip" brand awareness. Troy gives that in spades.
Pit Row
I agree with all the stated reasons that Ducati and TLD formed a partnership, however do not discount that it was an easy and natural selection after the PM Gas Gas spit. TLD more than likely owns the semi, has years of experience, has the logistics and staff figured out, thus knows the all the procedures. Rebrand the rig, send over Ducati techs and one has a low-cost entry into SX.
Because Troy Lee IS motocross.
They know the brand is a high end Yuppie street bike that contrasts with the working class sport of motocross. Troy Lee gives them instant street cred.
And, Italians are all about style. So Troy makes a lot of sense as a partner.
Why pick Troy? Because he is absolutely the right guy for this, he is experienced with running top level teams, has all the connections, and he gets the culture of the sport. They are not even racing this year and look at the hype they created.
That said, I got the impression from some of the interviews that Troy and Cairoli gave that this may not be a done deal for next season. The only thing he was really committed to was this tour, they seemed very skeptical on possible testing or riders for next season, or anything happening beyond this tour. Someone even asked about a clothing collaboration, and there wasn't a clear answer on that.
This is the only thing I could think of after reading that!

Now that’s funny, and very true as well! No disrespect towards Barcia, just funny!! 😆😂🤪😜😝
Pretty sure they talked to several other teams about doing it but who else was in need of a new brand than TLD? I do think they will do well with it but really what other choice did they have if they wanted to go with an existing team owner?
OP: you’re just wrong.
So who's riding these new Ducati's?
I don't think we're agreeing about the same thing lol... I'm saying idk if TLD was the right move (aside from sponsorship) to build Ducati into a championship threat team.
They could have been a works team like Triumph, I think partnering with TLD was a good move to get things setup quicker and cheaper, but if they're in it for the long run running a works team would be MUCH better
