To me, one of the coolest sounds in moto is a 500 lugging into a turn, then how quickly it comes alive when the throttle is cracked. No bog, just instant bark.

The moment at 4:27 in that vid actually made me make a 'oooh' noise and watched it about 10 times

There will always be a KX 500 in my 'if only' quiver haha

Wish they would put some more time in tho this. Longer episodes, build series etc.

There is so much content that could be made from that family and Redbull.

I regularly rode a 83 RM500 as a 16yo, it had a user friendly engine, if there’s such a thing with 500s, handled surprisingly well too, but the lack of brakes was frightening! As was the lack of a safety seat 😆

I rode my friends dads Maico 490 once when I was 14 or 15 out at Indian Dunes.... Could barely touch the ground leaning off the seat to one side.    Once moving I was okay.     All I remember about that thing was that it it must be what a Saturn V felt like on the launch pad.

Nah he was just going that fast Very impressive riding.  I don’t think a real good 125 would’ve been able to hang with that top speed.  He said. He like the cr500 the best. I see 90,s cr125,s at the track yet. There cutting laps at the same speed or faster than 24,s.  Usually there really good riders from the pro am days.

True story. I grew up just south of Buchanan, Michigan and of course purchased most of my race bikes from Gene Ritchie the owner of Red Bud Cycle, located in the big barn at what used to be the main entrance of the track. Gene sold Maico, Bultaco and Husky's back in the day.

In 1978 I was racing a 400 Maico then in '79 & '80 raced a YZ 400. In late 1980 I had Gene order me a new '81 490 Maico. The 490 came in if I recall in late February and snow was still on the ground. Gene let me come in and pull the cylinder off and clean and match the ports, reassemble the bike and place it in the show room until good weather arrived later in the spring.

Once the first nice days of spring came around and things dried up so everything wasn't so muddy, I took the 490 out for a test ride around what is now Red Bud's night track after I got off of work. The bike felt great but exiting turns I really struggled keeping the bike under control with the unbelievable acceleration the 490 had. I figured I'd get used to it and washed the bike and put it back in the show room. I repeated the same thing on the next outing but by the time I put the 490 back in the show room I was disappointed that I still seemed to be struggling with the 490 and its power output. At home that night I really considered having Gene sell my 490 and order me another 400 which I felt I could actually go faster on.

The third outing was on the big track and this time the big Maico and I just clicked and the rest is, as they say, history. The 490 was the best motorcycle I had ever ridden. It's power output was amazing and the handling was like nothing I'd ever ridden. I regret ever getting rid of that motorcycle but we all know how it is, you have to sell the old one to buy the new one....

It's at idle where they get me.  Seems like the rpm is lower than smaller bores and there's something about that authority that is so evident event at low RPM>

I was racing 80cc's in 1981 but one day me and my Dad went to watch at a local adult club race. I reckon the entry was about 80% Maico, and the rest shared out amongst Husky and the Jap bikes. I think I saw two KX's.

A year later I went to the same race and the Maicos were down to about 30%, and another year later had almost all gone. The Alpha 1 debacle killed Maico off; what a waste..

That track is owned by one of my best friends. The better track was across the street in the 80s 90s until he sold the land to Target. We rode there weekly.  Hannah rode there before a Seattle Supercross and Donnie Schmidt too.

This is Kelly Farms right? I live down the road and see this track all the time. Wish I could spin some laps there since I could be there in five minutes lol.

Great video. I can vouch for 2 of them. Plus a 3rd OG Open bike not included.

10000014061000001405.jpg?VersionId=That old CR looked like it went pretty good but, couldn't slow down! Good brakes (disc) must have been a huge upgrade back in the day. Just finished this 84 CR 500. Can't wait to ride it. It's a BEAST to start.........

 Very cool test.

I have an 82 465 with a 500 top end, if you could get the thing to stop, and put different forks in it,  it would  try not to kill you , but still be horrible. But back then , it was awesome.

86 Cr500 was a lot better.

We built a 96 CR500 into a TM300 SMX chassis, ( well someone else 'built' it, we turned it into something you could ride without bits falling off it every ride)  and on Tarmac , is was only 0.5 secs a lap off of the best 450 Husky we ever built.

But everyone fucks them up by making them faster not slower.

At least the kick start is on the correct side that year! Was on the left in 1983.

Edit: beautiful bike you have there by the way!

An 81 Maico 490 would have been an epic add to that video.  Although, having lived through that age, I'm not sure how well it would hold up to his massive balls...

Probably the biggest miss was not including the T500...  Something to give that BRC a run.

Should have added a 1980/81 KX 420 to the roster . Never rode one but apparently the bike was bad enough where after 81 they skipped the 82 model year to start over and came up with a KX 500 that wasn't much better lol . I did ride one of those back then .... briefly .

Great video! He shreds on all of them, watching those old beasts get manhandled is so cool!

Here’s me and my 88 KX500 at an SRA GP, Glen Helen in ‘93. It took me about 2 years of riding 500s to figure out how to stay off the ground, once I got it I loved those things!

Awesome.  I raced an '84.  Yes a bear to start.  Also raced a 125 that year.  Great times!
