McGrath comes to mind - The only injury I can remember is he was on a golf course at night and drunk and jacked his foot or ankle
I was thinking about all the insanely fast rookies who suffered an injury requiring surgery and how they went from seeing themselves as "immortals" who take insane risks (until they don't) to seasoned Vets who measure the risk with the reward. <-- made me think it would be a good discussion on vital to name the guys who not only won, but also managed to avoid major injuries
Dungey was my first thought.
My first thought too, he seemed to never get hurt (Dungey). I saw a post about McGrath, but I do not put McGrath in the same category (just me) because he was definitely more of a SX guy, when I think of multi-time champ, I think of somebody who was successful indoors and outdoors.
MC had his ankle issue that took him out of the nationals and of course his hip injury that pretty much ended his career.

RC did pretty good for most of his career
The KTM "King Killer" 250SX.
MC fell off that KTM more than all his years on other brands combined! Was he a part-timer on it? He didn't want to race outdoors anyways and surprisingly he did get that one outdoor championship.
If I remember correct, I think the only time RC missed was when he had his knee repaired during SX, And I think that knee had been bugging him for a spell before he pulled the plug to get a repair done. Wardy I can't recall ever being sidelined much, or Glover either. But, when they were ripping, I was just a child, so I could be wrong.
He had a collarbone in 2012i think, and then the neck in 2016, that's all I can recall.
I don't remember Jeff Ward missing too much time to injuries .
has to be RC ...he had that knee tear and missed SX one year but other than that the little bugger was bullet proof!!!
The more I'm thinking back, as in my childhood.... I can't really recall Johnny O being hurt very much either. Or Barnett. Bell had shit knees, forcing him out early if I recall...... If i am wrong, please forgive. I'm going back to reading MXA and Dirtbike days, coming home from wherever Dad took us for that weekend somewhere in the country for a 4 dollar trophy.....and a Truckstop dinner. Damn I miss those days...... And you Daddy.
I thought Carmichael said in a broadcast he had only broken like 1 or 2 bones his entire life, which is insane
Pastrana
Herlings
Cairoli had a long career with few injuries, I think due to injury he had to pull out of two championships in like 18 seasons? That's pretty insane for our sport.
RC only ever DNF’d one national due to injury. Him and MC are pillars of staying healthy and tormenting their competitors
But even with the collarbone, didn't he only miss a couple of races? So in reality, he only had the neck over his entire career which is impressive.
Pit Row
MC broke a leg in 1991 too.
He also got injured at Steel City in 07 which was a collarbone injury and took him out of the last 3 rounds (including Steel City).
Especially considering some stories that have floated around about bending/breaking Renthals during the week.
They all get hurt more that we know anything about.
Even though his career was kindof shot lived, I can't remember JMB getting injured at all in dirt racing.
Ward was mentioned above, he came to mind first for me. I think Stanton was pretty lucky too.
MC does come to mind initially, but upon further inspection he had a few bad hits that were potentially championship killers...
2 ankle injuries. Each may have cost him titles (especially 1996 outdoors).
Wrist injury from his 1998 Pontiac(?) SX crash where the handlebar clamp bolts famously snapped. He did finish the indoor season and of course won. From what I recall he didn't even know his wrist was that badly injured until much later, which ultimately required surgery (navicular). This effectively cancelled his outdoor season after 2 rounds where he was leading in points. 1998 would have been our last chance at seeing a full season from him... It was "Part Time" after that.
Hip from KTM bogging on the face of a triple. That retired him.
I was thinking JMB or Dungey. Dungey had that insane podium streak record at one point too.
Reed? prior to his late years..
JMB broke his arm leading the 1990 nationals. I can't remember what round but I think .maybe washougal
Didn't RC also get hurt at the last national after wrapping up the title in 06 I believe? When Tedesco filled in on the MXoN team?
I know Dungey has been brought up numerous times here…but I’ll do it again. He seemed to know exactly how to ride at the level it took to win…without taking undue risks that might lead to him crashing. He was pretty much a machine.
