Cool line from Ricky last night…

Anyone catch when RC said, “riders seem to be ok to get second these days, I was never like that..”

Thought that was cool! Another reason I loved that era so much, second place was first loser..

RC doesn’t know his ass from his elbow.  Remember how many times last summer he thought Jett should let chase by 🤦🏼

He was saying it as one reason they seem to be having longer careers these days.  And he went on to say, "...and I Iike that", apparently referring to their not needing to win every time and it seemingly allowing for longer careers, almost regretting the way his went in that sense.

I am glad Ricky said it. SO much better when he tells it like it is and doesn't try to play to what the broadcast team may want

He was literally like that though. End of 03 Reed was on fire and RC knew 2nd the rest of the way got him the championship, so that’s what he did. Racing Stewart in 06, there were nights Stewart was on fire and he knew he needed to minimize the damage and get 2nd. That’s what he did.

That might be what Scott Taylor said, but Ricky was losing his mind not winning those races

Listen to interviews of Ricky talking about those days. He was content not pushing the pace to try and ride with those guys.

I think Ricky is starting to hear some footsteps coming for his job. He’s seemed more and more defensive lately.

RC is overly humble in his retirement IMO. Lots of “oh I wasn’t that good, happy to be there” talk. In the moment, does this look like a guy that was happy and laying up for 2nd?

your cherry picking one photo, lol. Obviously tensions are high and emotions are flowing but he was mad at how Ferry was racing him, not that he got beat.   Context matters.

I'll still never forget Ricky's interview with Art Eckman on the old Supercross Live broadcast in 2003 after Ricky lost 2 races in a row to Reed. Comes off the track after a frustrating race and Art already has the SX Live microphone in his face less than 30 seconds after crossing the finish line:

Art asks - "Ricky, your thoughts on the race?"
Ricky pissed off - "What can I say? The f%ckin race is over"

Think back to this era of Legends though. Carmichael, Reed, Stewart, sometimes Windham. They were never outside the top 3. They were on the podium every week. Nowadays Sexton, Webb, Tomac, and Jett are getting 5th-8th at times. The field is much more stacked now than ever, BUT I also blame the easy tracks with only 1 jumping option.

Not to mention this is the Salt Lake City race Reed took out Carmichael before the whoops right after the Ferry incident.

You really think he was not mad that Chad whittled his gap down to 7 with one race left? You’re high

Obviously in a perfect scenario he would like to extend his points gap.  But he also knew all he needed to do was finish second or better and the championship was his and him and Chad were light years better than the rest..  he was pissed that he thought the Yamaha riders were trying to take him out, not that he got beat.  Context matters.

How is this podium interview for context or is this more cherry picking? (Houston 03 in case my link doesn’t work)

In this same braodcast, after Sexton "finally" got around Roczen, Ricky said to watch how fast he catches Webb, like he was just going to run up on him and set up a pass. Ricky says a lot of things.

For context, both Bubba and Ricky hated to be the one in front until the end. They knew they were being studied by the other and wanted to be the hunter not the hunted. Jett letting Chase by would be to study Chase's lines. However, last year Jett was so dominant outdoors, what would be the point. Chase wasn't a threat.

Taking a quick look at some of the top riders when they were at their peaks (basically from the time they started winning 3+ SX races per year to the time they stopped), not surprisingly, Carmichael was the best at getting on the podium:

Carmichael (2001-2007) 93%

Reed (03-09) 89%

McGrath (93-01) 78%

Dungey (10-17) 76%

Villopoto (10-14) 73%

Stewart (06-14) 63%

That is what you took away from that? He could have said that at A1. What is he supposed to say, “I’m screwed”?

I’ll just have to agree to disagree with you on this I guess.

Seems to me RC4 quit so early because he didn't want the stress of trying to beat JS7. I have a friend who knows Ricky pretty well and he says Ricky told him he hated racing towards the end of his career. I think Ricky has also stated that in interviews.

Too bad. Think how many wins he could have gotten if he still enjoyed it and raced another 3-4 years. I also think that once these guys get a lot of wins it really doesn't mean much anymore to them.

Didn't RJ put up a video a while back showing some of his 1st place trophies sitting all covered with dust, forgotten in a garage or something?

In 2006 that's plausible but RC was absolutely not okay with taking 2nd to Reed at the end of 2003. He was trying his ass off to win those races.

Ricky always says to let the race come to you.  If it's not there, don't push it.

But he always raced to win.  I can't remember a single time except for his first almost win against McGrath that he didn't go for blood.

I say, if you're going to line up, race to win.  I don't care what the odds are.

David Bailey said in the race call that RC was riding on the edge and looked panicked. I’ll take DB’s call on what he sees in someone’s riding.
Also if I remember rightly RC crashed once or twice that season while chasing Reedy, I’d say that’s pushing it and not settling. However even when he crashed they were that far ahead, he still finished second.
It was great to see RC challenged, but as with every other occasion, he met that challenge head on and came out on top. That’s why he’s the GOAT.
