At a trailhead in Arkansas before watching the eclipse, I had just unloaded our bikes when several SXS's full of people and several kids on quads roll up. I thought, one of these guys is going to start doing donuts in the parking lot, which was covered with ~1.5 inch rocks. I had my rig all the way to the side of the parking lot and pulled as far forward as possible to leave lots of room. One teenager on a small quad proceeded to start doing donuts about 20ft from my windshield. After I yelled at him, he was very polite, but why do they always have to do this? Every freaking time it's either music so loud I can't hear my bike, or it's pelting peoples vehicles with rocks. Also note on the trail I saw several with coolers attached to the back, I'm sure they were for Gatorade and water....

I hate quads…I hate SXS even more. SXS’s Are absolutely ruining the desert.,.what was once beautiful single track is noticed by sxs drivers, they wonder where it goes, don’t want to hike it, or get on a bike, so they take their 20 inches of suspension travel, and 30 inch tires and just drive over it…then another sxs sees their tracks and figures they’ll do it too…and before long, what was once a single track is now a road, then more and more see it, then they start creating big whoops…then they don’t like to drive on the whoops, so they create a road next to the road they created…and then…what was once a beautiful valley with a small single track down it, is now a two lane highway.
Then the greenies see the trail proliferation and use it as an excuse to close the area to ALL OHV’s (including dirt bikes).
Northern Nevada too. Really pisses me off too. I believe it all starts with the manufacturers and their "go fast skim whoops fly through mud holes spin doughnuts kick up dust just have fun out there it's all about you" marketing. Do ANY dealers help the cause with even a mention of OHV etiquette? BTW, I do own/drive a SxS. And a quad (mainly for dragging my back yard). Have ridden dirt bikes for 54 years. Still have three. They're all fun. Four wheels are just too easy to have fun on.
I’ve witnessed them being scolded on many occasions at my OHV area for doing donuts in the parking lot, kicked out for being on the mx tracks that are clearly marked “No 4 wheelers” at every entrance. They stop in the middle of the fire roads behind a blind curve or drop off to talk and rehydrate.
The ONLY thing worse than a quad/sxs on the dirt is a Slingshot or Spider on the road!
Get off my lawn!
No…dealers couldn’t care less about trail etiquette..and they are shooting the entire OHV industry in the foot by not educating their buyers…riding areas are getting closed all over the West…largely, the blame is on the SXS’s.
As you said, they are just too easy to have fun on…so you get a more lazy, disrespectful, trashy demographic that owns them. Add easy financing, and you get even more of them…it’s a recipe for disaster. To be clear, not everyone that drives a sxs is lazy disrespectful and trashy...but the chances are very high that if someone is lazy disrespectful and trashy-and happens to have an interest in OHV's-you will be in a sxs (and if not a sxs, a quad)...ruining it for everyone else.
I had miles of our single track ruined by quads and SXS. Most of these idiots don't even think or know that they are doing anything bad."we made your tiny trail nice and wide for you" The single track we cut is indistinguishable from deer trail. These morons turn it into a road. I have fought back a bit by felling trees into the trail but some carry chain saws and cut them out. Of course there are piles of bud light cans where they stop to refresh themselves. My ultimate idea is to create a beautiful SXS wide trail that meanders down a progressively steep hill where they end up on a steel plate covered in grease that leads to a cliff....
Back when I was still riding, we frequented Durhamtown a good bit. We jokingly played Durhamtown Bingo, and one of the squares was, "quad tard doing donuts in the parking lot". Another was, "kid with a mohawk helmet" but I digress.
It never failed. Those f*ckwits would literally roll the thing off the ramp and immediately go into a gravel-spraying donut. You could put all the IQ they possessed in a thimble.
Nuke The Quads
The SxS's are fucking up MTB trails even, not just OHV trails. Seems they attract the worst crowds.
A SxS purchase includes no talent, no common sense, no awareness and a 24.95% interest rate for 84 months.
One of the funniest things I’ve seen was at Durhamtown Plantation. Dude with his son trying to get his quad up ramps at about a 45 degree angle into the back of some massive lifted bro-dozer. After 2 failed attempts, I guess he got pissed and sent it, cleared the tailgate and exploded the rear glass of the truck. Dude went into a full on f bomb tirade, launch the nukes meltdown in front of his kid. I felt bad for the kid but was laughing my ass off inside!
The sad part is…as far as the general public is concerned we are all in the same category 👌…I just got injured riding, requiring multiple Dr”s visits…. When I say dirtbike crash…first response is: are you a wheelie boy? Then… are you a quad guy? Freestyle guy?..I normally just say Mtn bike crash so I don’t have to explain that MX is a legitimate sport….
I agree. The sxs are ruining riding for us all. Everybody always has to go “riding” (I call it driving) when it’s muddy because getting covered in mud is cool! 😒. Absolutley destroys the trails and gives the rest of us a bad look. Everytime I’d go out they all have a cooler and half of them are already drinking while on the trail. Not cool. Not to mention the battle of who has a louder stereo and more led lights. They fly around like they are the only ones out there and I’ve about gotten taken out a few times. I will admit I am also a quad guy but I’ve grown up riding moto all my life so the quad is just for the woods riding so don’t hate me too much lol
Quads and SxS's SUCK!
SxS's are ruining Colorado trails and roads all the time. Blasting music, riding off-trail, riding into pristine waters and getting stuck, getting access closed. Especially those from out of state who don't give a shit about what happens once they leave.
I was at a OHV in South Carolina last weekend, the trails are all one way and I still almost hit two four wheelers head on with no helmets. The craziest thing about this is they have STOP and WRONG WAY signs on the trails to keep you from going the wrong way they are literally DOT signs that they use on the interstate they are huge signs so they must be great car drivers as well.
But at every hare scramble I race there are plenty of people riding through the parking lot at 40mph between cars I've almost been clobbered by so there is idiots everywhere unfortunately.
Because doughnuts are fun
Pit Row
I'm confused as to what there is to do on a quad besides donuts in the parking lot... Anyone? seems like hunting and actual work are the only reasons to ride one.
SxS’s - Boogie Boards of the desert. I hate those piles of shit so much it’s probably unhealthy. And I don’t “HATE” much, but fuck those things. Not only do they fuck up all the trails they’re also fucking killing people. Taking your kids to Ocotillo Wells now is like telling them to play on the fucking freeway. Sorry for the F bombs but fuck those things
The fact there’s ten million of em doesn’t help either, they’re like locusts
HATE HATE HATE quads/sxs. The local gas station I get my non-eth 92 octane at is a stopping point for Brown's Camp OHV - every weekend these clowns pull up in their lifted diesels, loaded with kids, and pick up a couple cases of cheap beer. The demographic is pretty sleezy based on appearances. Then the hordes head up to the OHV and do whatever it is they do there - I won't ride there because of the chaos of SXS, beer, and guns. There are ER helicopter rides out of that place on a regular basis. Some local moto tracks will allow quad sessions and they just screw up the track. On occasion one of my private track owners lets them out there and they just destroy my beautiful prep in 10 minutes, and piss off every moto rider there. If I never see another SXS I will be fine with that.
Ummmm, race....... Racing is not restricted to 2 wheels. I will be racing XC this weekend in Texas on 3 and 4 wheels. The TX4 series - great people and a fun series. Oh yeah - you can pop wheelies on them also
went trail riding in November at a place that I haven't been to in around 10 years. What used to be a legendary trail system was ruined by SXS, you couldnt ride 20 feet without an off-shoot trail, impossible to ride with a group of people because it would be so easy to go in different directions. What used to be miles and miles of trail was just tiny little offshoots everywhere that SXS decided to go off trail in, and over time, make new shitty trails
Nice rant! Nothing held back! Love it.
Its a HUGE pet peeve of mine of people who spin donuts in parking lots/intersections to make them rough as hell. I mean, we ALL have to drive across it including the dildo who did the donut. Its like standing at the urinal and intentionally missing but you find out you just ricocheted piss all over your shoes. Sure, the restroom floor has your scent trail but so does your Doc Martins.
What's even worse than quads are idiot track owners that allows them to race and practice on motocross bike days! A local track in Oregon (Albany Mx) will allow 3 or 4 quads to show up and all the bikes have to sit around for 15 to 20 minutes while these quads go and destroy the track and make it a hard packed freeway. Many of us stop going there because of it. The track owners though seem to think the $100 to $150 they get from the quads is worth pissing off many of their customers.
Ever seen them go through the woods when it's Muddy ? Stand on the back bar and bounce up and down while holding it to the bars ,complete morans.
3 girls lost their lives in the last couple seasons at OW. Those are just the publicized ones I heard about, who knows how many others. One story hit particularly hard. A teenage girl on a dirtbike saw a group of them coming so she pulled off the side of the trail to let them by. One of them couldn't see from all the dust I guess and pulled out of the cloud and took her out. Boom, dead. The Mom posted their family has ridden out there for years and the girl grew up on bikes, had full gear, played by all the rules, looked ahead, saw them coming, got completely off the trail and the kook hit her anyway and kept going. It makes me sick thinking about it. My wife rides, my son and daughter both grew up camping and riding out there. Now my grand daughters are getting to PW50 age, my daughter wants them to have the same experiences and memories she got as a kid, I have a pw in the garage waiting for them, but it scares the living shit out of me. I actually want to find a new spot because of those things. There's an Ocotillo Wells facebook page I'm on. 90% of the posts are from new SxS owners who want to know where to go and where to camp and where the cool stuff is, and like clockwork there's always some brainiac who posts the gps coordinates of every cool thing and trail out there, like by doing that they're showing everyone how cool and experienced they are or whatever I don't effing know. Whatever happened to keeping your mouth shut ? They're all about getting more people to come out there, and here's where the cool shit is, no exploration, no discovering something unexpected, just instant access to the stuff that used to be hard to find. Freaking kooks. I could go on a 3 page rant. Crusty Demons of Dirt was the first nail in the coffin, the place was off the radar before that video. Then the internet and SxS influx has made it unrecognizable from what it was. I know, "Old guy talking about the old days" yada yada. But it really is a different climate out there now, and not in a good way unfortunately.
Agree with every quad rant in this thread.
As a former mt bike DH trailbuilder/rider/racer, keeping sport quads off of our trails, in a specific ohv area set aside for us, was a neverending battle.
(The early days up on Windrock mt Tennessee)
I live near a very popular lake for bass fishing.
(Watts bar lake)
Infinite amount of coves.
The fishermen loathe jet skis for the very same reason.
Ripping along shorelines, into every cove, ruining the fishing for hours.
IMO, sport quads and jet skis allow every non skilled inbred with a credit rating to purchase a vehicle that allows them access to areas the have no business being in.
Whats even crazier is these guys pass browns camp(actually atv and utv friendly) and go down to Diamond Mill and just do fuckin donuts in the parking lot. Diamond Mill is almost strictly single track. Last weekend a group riding Kayos and Raptor 660 without a muffler just hot lapping in the parking lot. At one point it was what im assuming was Dad, mom and kid, all on one of the Kayos, no helmet in sight. Theres literally hundreds of miles of trails and the sand dunes are 20 more miles away, wtf are you doing.
