I have the same issue, but I know that a version of the app exists that allows you to create custom maps, it’s just not released yet unfortunately.  If you bump up to the 70hp mark it improves the response quite a bit, but then you’re having to tame an insane amount of power everywhere else.

Creating a quick turn e-throttle is tricky because swapping the throttle out on the Varg would require finding a replacement with the exact same hall sensor range as the stock Hirschmann throttle.  I’ve looked into it because I’m not a fan of the Hirschmann and I absolutely hate having dead space at the beginning of the throttle (I’m the guy who runs zero play in the throttle on his gas bikes).  With our TruMoto controllers at Electro&Co. it’s easy to use pretty much any throttle you want because our phone app has a throttle detection feature that can accommodate a large range of voltage outputs, but no such luck with the Stark app at the moment.  This will probably change in the future but for now we’re kind of stuck unfortunately.

Exactly. Bumping up to say 70hp of course remedies it a bit, since more power with less twist, but I don't want that much power.

It's not an issue on most parts of the track, but I would want more power with less twist in tight corners AND tight pockets between jumps.

So not more power, but getting max power with less twist.

It will be a thing eventually, I’m disappointed it’s taken so long for them to release the updated version of the app but I’m trying to be patient.  I’m sure it a huge challenge to make it not only intuitive but also find a set of safe parameters that will allow customers to tune their bikes but not adjust things so far into left field that it damages the controller or battery.

I’m just a dumb mechanical engineer, I don’t mess with the smart people that do software engineering, I know my lane and I stay in it Laughing

Yes, and maybe at 70-80hp, haven't even tried... but say the throttle tube/grip can turn 180degress. Sometimes you might want max power when grip is turned 180degress, but what if you wanted 90% power already when grip is turned 45degress and the rest 10% comes during the next 135degress of throttle twist.

Selecting a more aggressive map on the Honda (or any other) doesn't usually give you more HP, what it does it usually gives you the HP earlier...i.e more aggressive. I'm super happy with the whatever 43-50hp the Varg delivers, I just wish I didn't have to turn the g*d d*mn throttle tube until my elbow touches the ground Wink

BUT, the throttle response curve, I need to twist it throttle way too much to get full power, I wish there were a way to adjust the 'mapping' that is throttle response curve, so it's not linear but rather ramps up much quicker during the first part of the twist and then tapers off. I feel my CRF250 is easier to ride on a track with the aggressive map since I don't need to turn the throttle that much, wish it was the same with the Varg. Especially out of tight corners or a tricky part before a jump, I don't want to turn the g*d d*mn throttle 360degrees (not really) for full power.

my complaint for them is they’re freaking quiet when one is out on the track mixed with regular bikes.

Ive gone to square up lines only to nearly bounce off of one more than once this season already. Idk how to fix that.

Totally agree. This has happened to me as well. Everyone who rides or races know when someone is near you by sound. It alters the way you ride knowing someone is near you. There’s definitely a safety issue mixing these bikes with ICE’s.

I second this the lack of noise is the biggest safety concern I rode with one out Cahuilla Creek and I could not tell where he was at when he was behind me I literally had to  swivel my head to find him and  not concentrate on the track!

Why yes, yes it does. Stark threads really bring out the best of VitalMx.

Yes you know the E-haters don´t give a rats ass about stark.......they just like to talk about it. A lot. In every thread.

That argument is invalid in my opinion, when I’m racing my YZ250 against a pack of 4 strokes none of them can hear me and somehow I’ve survived for years.  If people are relying only on sound to know where another bike is they really need to open up their other senses, that’s kind of terrifying to think about.

Funny maybe I have good hearing then because I can hear a two stroke when I’m on the track. So we can agree to disagree about it being invalid. Start up your two stroke and listen to it. Then for comparison a Stark. I bet there is a difference 🙄

Post the threads in E-bike forum and I'll wager 99% of the "hate" disappears.

There is only one reason people are posting these threads in moto.... Nobody visits the e-bike sub-forum.

This was pure clickbait for the usual suspects 😆

Great thing about electrics is that this kind of issue can be addressed by software, as explained by JM, so hopefully they can send an update for this soon.

The too quiet issue is an argument I hear about with e-bicycles, you can’t hear them come up behind you😂😂 I don’t think a pedal bike makes noise but people like to whine about anything new.🤷🏼‍♂️

It's wouldn't have to be a massice jump, it's linear and should/will be adjustable once people have the means to adjust the relevant parameters.

Obviously you could totally make it like that, real sensitive with brutal delivery, but like you say it would be counter productive 👍

With drive by wire ICE engines as an example, say when the throttle grip position is closed entirely the ECU measures 0.5v and knows it is 0% throttle and the actual throttle body responds and it fully closed also. Likewise when the throttle grip is wide open, say the ECU measures 4.0v and the ECU calls this 100% and the the actual throttle body opens 100% of the way in response.

You could decrease the voltage that the ECU/control module needs to measure from the throttle grip to be considered 100% / wide open, to say 3.0v. This would give the same wide open throttle body response at a lesser degree turn of the throttle grip. After interpolating the rest of the cells in the relevant table, you have a more aggressive feeling throttle character and the throttle which is fully open at an earlier point in its rotation and anything beyond that point is still just considered 100%

Many pro level racecars with DBW have a switch or even multi position rotary switch which is referred to as a 'throttle characteristic switch'.

Of course the throttle grip portion of that would remain the same, but the throttle body response would be replaced with, I guess, motor duty cycle? I'm not super up on electric motors, but it would absolutely work in the same fashion.

As mentioned by ML himself, the Stark firmly belongs in the moto section as it's a moto bike.

Maybe you and the others that clog these threads up with shit just to argue can just move along and not post your usual drivel.

100% correct! Spot-on Magoofan!

Since it's motocross regardless of the propulsion or super cross regardless of the propulsion.

I'm guessing, could be very wrong, that 'dirt bikes/motocross' is actually equally a combustion engine hobby for many, tuning, oil, gasoline, smelling like a engine workshop from the 70s..... nothing wrong with that, great hobby!

...but is it possible that the actual sport, jumping doubles, triples, railing berms etc doesn't need the oil, the adrenaline is there anyway and maybe just maybe... the ladies prefer the well smelling dude driving his e-bike home on a trailer with a Porsche Cayenne? or... was she longing after a real man who actually forgot to wash his hands after adjusting the jetting on his 2-stroke?

Well, I’m glad someone can hear them because most of the guys on 450s I roll up on seem to have zero clue I’m behind them, and most of them say as much later on in the day.   I haven’t noticed it any worse on my Varg vs my two stroke, I generally just assume everyone on the track is going to be oblivious because most of them are, what bike I’m on seems to be irrelevant.

Has any aftermarket tuners successfully got in to the stark software and are able to make changes?  This is where custom maps and settings from a tuner would benefit. Tell the guy exactly how you want the thing to feel and they can write a program for the thing for throttle response hp and engine breaking. I know the stark can do most of that on the phone but I’m sure a tuner and a lap top can get in to the nitty gritty of everything.

If Stark is smart, access to the controller would be encrypted, stopping aftermarket access to make changes.

They should be encouraging aftermarket development imo. Get more traction for the brand if people can tinker. Everyone loves tinkering.

Yeah that defense is total crap. You aren’t always in the gas at the same time so you’ll catch a sound here and there when any bike is behind you, but a stark, zero noise I didn’t hear shit. It’s happened more than once.

im also on a bike with a super quiet exhaust so trying to use a “straw man argument” about a super loud four stroke making any other bike sounds irrelevant is nearly dishonest to the argument.

To a degree I guess, but I think they want to make sure people keep on the safer side of things . Especially while they are so new.  Maybe they will end up partnering with some companies to offer aftermarket tunes.  Or I hope that they just open up the ability to really finetune stuff for anybody who understands how to do it.  Like offer a more extensive interface that would require a laptop or computer and be in between full on programming and some type of software made to be more user friendly.

There are a few companies making software to derestrict EMTB's. I wonder if one of them will cross over into doing something with the Varg, or if a company like GET , PC or FMF will be the first to crack the Varg and offer something.

It really sounds like the OP just wants a throttle that doesn't need to turn as much . I thought I had seen one that had the option for a Varg  as one of the bikes it fit. But I wasn't able to find it again so it might have not been something that worked with a varg and they changed the fitments.  That would be a cool option to have, change it so full throttle was only a quarter turn or where ever You set wide open to be.

I would think a horn would be an easy fix for being heard out on the track, but I realize most people would take it as "Out of the way, coming through" instead of "Careful, I'm right beside you". A lot of dudes get their undies in a twist at people revving their gas bikes to alert their presence, so i imagine a horn would be that X2, especially among the numerous ebike haters.

I don’t understand how it suddenly became the other riders job to alert you that they’re there, either pay attention to what’s around you or live with being surprised every time a bike comes up on you from behind I guess.  I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve been cut off, cross jumped, or just plain dealt with completely oblivious riders no matter what bike I’m on, that’s not my fault that’s theirs I just ride like they don’t hear or see me for self preservation.

Until we get the ability to adjust the throttle maps, have you tried adjusting gearing? The 19" rear tire Varg has 14/48 gearing and tops out at about 90mph, which for motocross is pretty excessive. If you drop down to a 12T front (like Alta MXR has stock) it'll shift the power curve lower in the mph range at the expensive of top speed. The bike will feel more responsive that way.

The pre-production bikes I rode in Barcelona a year ago felt a little more snappy than our production bikes do. The throttle was tuned a bit more aggressive at the time.

Vince Friese can hear the bikes behind him, but still blocks, cuts off and cross jumps, a silent bike may be an advantage when passing some riders.

It's the rider making the pass's responsibility to do it safely, even if you have zero etiquette, zero awareness and are a drunk Vince Friese!

Lmao. Written text is so divisive. We all have a lot in common and are bike nerds. But can all be so polarized and ready to die on a hill and so opposed.

That’s a funny one, because when you don’t like E-bikes, you truly get the feeling a few guys are spam..., huh, sorry, spreading Stark propaganda all day, everyday.

When you’re convinced that robotic appliance is the perfect weapon to kill the sport, it’s pretty annoying.

Everybody’s after MXaddic, but has anyone ever seen Beagle do anything than post Anton’s press releases or write over and over « The Stark is wonderful, the Stark is great, all hail Stark! » like Nicholson in Shining?

I was at the moto track today, which was awesome by the way, and there were a couple Vargs there riding moto and riding very well at that.

You can’t bitch about Starks being in moto if you post your adventure “air shot” in moto every chance you get

@mxA dic  you wouldn’t slap anyone,  I’d bet my paycheck on it and it’s amazing to see that you have yet burnt up another day posting on Vital. Who’s the Vitard???
