I truly don’t get why people are so upset at those of us pointing out it’s the same exact thing every season. 2022 was the only one where it was truly just bad luck. Are we supposed to pretend this isn’t normal? None of us want to see injuries and we all want to see the best guys out there every round. We all want him to make a quick recovery and be 100%. This doesn’t change the facts. He has to back it down a bit and ride in control. He was sketchy all day Saturday and kept pushing. That crash was inevitable.

It's the tone of all the "I told you so's." Not you but some seem to revel in the fact he crashed and again because it makes them right about him. Also I've heard this a couple time but he didn't look sketchy at all to me Saturday.  Definitely didn't look like he was pushing. ML said the same thing on Pulp last night

He'll obviously recover from this physically.  How much does this affect him mentally though? Is it going to be constantly in his head, waiting for that shoe to drop and "bad luck" to come. Or can these pros keep pushing through these things?

Obviously there's always a "last straw," but if he can come back from getting rag dolled 30' out of the gate at A1 last year to ride the way he did this year, I think he can do it again.

Same thing I was going to say. If nine previous season-ending crashes haven't deterred him, why would he stop now?

DV12's podcast talks about how he shouldn't have crashed either. He pointed out his hands are fully on the bars, not a finger on the clutch or brake in case of an issue. So he was committed to just jump it as if it was normal. But even DV said, "anybody that's ridden for a while, you know as soon as you take off if you are going to be short or long." And Austin didn't even calculate where he was landing or what the outcome was going to be. Its as if he wasn't even paying attention, or he can't process the information fast enough for his riding speed. DV also went back to qualifying where he had multiple timing issues in the rhythm before the whoops, landing long and almost smashing his face on the handlebars. Either way the kid has a massive track record for crashing. I'm not glad the kid crashed, or hating on him. Its just beyond ridiculous the kid keeps crashing so hard and never learning from his mistakes. This one was avoidable, no matter how many of you say otherwise.

Yea that definitely could explain why he didnt have react as if he was going to come up short. In that case though he should have backed it down and switched to the safer line through that section and just brought it home. Its always easy to monday morning quarterback it but I’m sure Austin prob feels he should have done that also with how the result turned out. I’m absolutely gutted for the dude and this really puts a damper on the east championship now.

I watched all of the motos again last night, and naturally you pay close attention to the section he crashed.  There was a LOT of folks that were stumbling coming up short or long in the exact same spot Forkner did, it was obviously a massively technical section.  What I took away after watching it all again, every rider that choked in that spot, checked up and doubled the next jump, both in the 250s and 450s and went on with their night.  There was two notable crashes there, Forkner and Swoll, and Swoll's crash was due to tangling with another rider at the entry.

I understand it was a split-second decision, and as another post here mentioned DVs analysis showing Forkner was committed no matter what, but from my seat, and seeing a lot of other riders realize the same mistake and check-up, Forkner made a really bad decision.  This year he has seemed so different..  Riding smooth, more mature, bike looked good, I thought he had it this year Sad   Hopefully this becomes another learning moment, and we get to see him give it a go again.  He was a couple of races in and had the red plate.  Injuries he will recover from, hard to step away when you had the red plate on your bike when you crashed.

matter of time before the government comes in and shuts down this whole circus, clearly human beings werent designed to get ejected to concrete like that.

if austin can't do it safely, no one really can. some get luckier than others and go on for a while.

sad look for society when a circus like this passes for entertainment, when we all know 80% of the fans in arlington just showed up hoping to see a crash. have to wonder just how many people in that arena enjoyed seeing him down.

That is the type of crash that even if you don't like the guy it's a gut check and you pull back.

We have multiple sports where the main objective is simply punching each other in the head and/or injuring the other party. The gov doesn't give a shit about SX, thankfully

Been going on since the Roman's. There were no empty seats in the colluseum to watch this spectacle...

"Damnatio ad bestias (Latin for "condemnation to beasts") was a form of Roman capital punishment where the condemned person was killed by wild animals, usually lions or other big cats."

Can we do this with looters 🤔

something like that. back in those days you didn't have social media to harass and belittle the guy for three weeks after he made a slight mistake and got mauled.

Such a bummer.  I couldn't believe it. I'm glad that he will be ok. I felt sick seeing him go down.  Such a bummer to have come back so many times already.  When Austin's time racing is done, I think he could be an amazing mental coach.

Rider worn airbag systems like the one Alpinestars has for road and rally might be the biggest improvement in safety gear when they can get them to work for MX/SX. I wonder if having a remote to have the bag fill up and have a spotter, would be an option for pro racing or in addition to the sensors they have. In a crash like Austins ,He would have had time to activate it himself. I wonder how many top guys would wear something like that if they had the option?

I don't know how the tech works. But in moto gp. Does it deploy on all crashes or only over a certain speed?

Coz if it deployed for eli or in either of jetts crashes there race would be over. I think the downsides would outweigh the rewards.

I posted a video of a dual sport rider who had his deploy. You can still ride, and I imagine that They could also make a quick way to deflate it.

They are having issues with the sensors working for Moto.  They keep getting false crash detections. That was the only reason I was saying that maybe a manually operated one would be an option until they get the sensors to work. And it would be up to the rider and spotter for the threshold of when to deploy or not.  If that would make it a viable option to use sooner and possible help stop injuries ,than why not?

When if goes off,  You can still ride, it might make it harder to move around in while inflated. But the types of racing they are using it in now are the type that a crash ends Your day or will take a good amount of time to get back going from. For a moto specific device they could add on a quick deflate system.  They are only good for a single crash anyway. I'm not sure if there is a replaceable part or if the entire thing needs to be replaced. There have been times they go off on people without crashing . It looks like wearing a couple really thick winter jackets. The image below is with it inflated. And than some examples of the other models they have.  Its not like one of those big bubbles that Youtubers get inside and have their buddies hit them with cars.

I really hope he is able to come back and get on a good streak. I can not imagine what that must feel like to have so much skill, and get so close to doing what so many can only dream of.  He has already done a lot of things that very few are able to do.  I was hoping that this would be a good year for him.

After he avoided the first turn disaster of the first round. I thought he had finally got some luck on his side.  As bad as the injuries are, he got lucky with them not being worse. He was able to kinda walk off the track. And amazingly not have a head injury. I hope he is able to come back out for outdoors. I'll be rooting for him.

It's a good idea in theory. But mx /sx is a different beast.

It would need to only deploy in bigger crashes.

How many small crashes do riders have that don't result in injury.

And look at the protection area.

When a rider does crash what do they injure? Hands, wrists, concussions, feet, ankles, legs,

It would help with shoulder injuries which is a highly injured area. But torso injuries although can be some of the most severe injurys are the least common.

Lots of things Human Beings weren't designed for, like Scuba Diving, Flying on Airplanes, driving a car faster than you can run, going into Outer Space, Sky Diving and a host of other activities that people die from every year.

Exactly why they are still working on it.....  And why they do not have a production off road version. because of how difficult it is to get it to sense a crash.   Just like how a helmet only protects Your head, and like every piece of gear its not going to help in every crash. Its meant to work together with other gear.

My only contribution to the concept was perhaps they use a spotter to set it off until they get the sensors to work. It would at that point be up to the rider to trust the spoter and decide. It's probable not worth the time and investment for the few types of crashes that would happen slow enough that a spotter could react, that would also be the type that the airbags would help with.

I imagine that they have different shaped , different coverage, etc. on the prototype MX versions. Like how the street, road race and Rally versions are all different.

Alpinestars must think that it will do something, otherwise they would have just said they are not even considering an off road version.

I know its not going to help in every crash. It might not have made a difference in Forkners crash.  I wonder if   the way he was bent up, was what caused his vertebrae injuries. That was more of my point. That padding on the concrete may not be a big help , if the injury is coming more from the bending part of the impact than what was doing the impacting.

Forkner's career reminds me of Cianciarulo's. An immense talent wasted by this desire for glory and to be ahead at all costs. For him and his family, it is high time to stop to preserve his long-term health. We don't need to witness a tragedy that will make him a diminished person.

Oh stop it. If he was the only one doing the jump combo that way you may have a point, but he wasn’t. He’s been in total control of the bike both races this season, he just got bit by a sketchy section of the track that I’m surprised didn’t ruin more dudes tonight.

I would be getting eye surgery asap if I was him. I don’t really understand why it’s not on the to-do list of every person who wears contacts or glasses. And even more so if you are someone who enjoys sport a lot or an athlete.

The sensor issue is going to be a big problem for mx, but the other issue is if guys were interested in more protection, there's already body armor they could wear now that isn't much more bulky than these. Guys refuse to wear it.

Yah the top pro guys might not want to wear them no matter what. But if they are able to get the sensor issue figured out it might make some even more protective options possible.  I'm glad that there are efforts being made to make more protective , protective gear. And everything is not all heading towards the most minimal versions possible.

I wonder what the MX version looks like. How different it is from the Dakar/Off road version they have.

I would think that if and when the sensor thing gets figured out it could be used in some sort of warning system that would alert other riders  of a crash in the next corner or blind jump , could alert medics sooner and do a lot of things even if its just the sensors being used without the bag system.

I would be getting eye surgery asap if I was him. I don’t really understand why it’s not on the to-do list of every person who wears contacts or glasses. And even more so if you are someone who enjoys sport a lot or an athlete.

They should make goggle lenses where the WHOLE lens is magnified like glass/contacts.

They are prescription lenses out there, I just don't know who makes them When I use my goggles, I have over the glasses ones.

Risk and $$$ are 2 reasons. It also doesn't last forever and it's not recommended to do it twice, although I don't know if the guidance on that has changed. I had mine done (Lasik) at 25, and by 35 or so I was back to contacts/glasses. Your body keeps aging and changing so it's somewhat inevitable. While it worked, it was sure life changing and made a huge difference in all the sports I did.

Possibly your comment was sarcasm but these have been around for many years.

A couple things I’ve noticed about Austin this year:

Whatever him and Ryno were doing was working

He’s grown a lot this year

His speed and racecraft are unquestionable

His ability to bounce back from injury and get up to speed is amazing. Doug Henry and Trey Canard come to mind

Even with his history, I’d sign him to a 450 in a heartbeat.  Too bad I don’t have a 450 team.

He’s used up all his bad luck I think some good luck is coming his way

A couple more laps and I was just about thinking CShip for him this year…….again - I wish RC would just stop pumping guys up when they’re coming back from injury. Austin shut down Deegans charge and started gapping him all smooth and in control with just a couple laps left and RC starts yapping. STFU! RC, then sure enough

I hope he didn’t break too big a piece off this time cause I’d love to see him come back and get this monkey off his back - or just hang up the boots and start making babies. Whatever makes him happy

What does RC have to do with riders crashing lol?

I just feel every time RC starts talking about a rider he throws a whoopie cat at them - could be my imagination but it happens a lot.  I'm sure it doesn't have anything to do with crashing while you go fast and putting yourself in a good position while you go fast which forces the announcer to mention your name.  No that's a stretch.  I blame Ricky.

It's not the actual crash. It's got to do with the wheelbarrow full of cash that he prefers to push around on concrete when he bombs whomever it is doing pre-show stuff. Pay contention boy! You'll learn a learning lesson....
