I raced Lorretta's with him in the supermini class. It would be sad to see him hang it up, but as I said in another thread. This sport thanks no one, and unfortunately for him I don't think he has enough to gain to warrant anther season. He should either take a full year off as a privateer and comeback or just retire. He can do the booth as we saw, or go the route of brand rep/tester/whatever, Unfortunately we will never see his full potential. I fear his career is over before it started. Which is sad considering people were calling him the next RC or JS at Lorretta's.
Saw the video this morning. The honesty is what makes AC so likeable. Crazy that AC is on the back end of his 20's. And just one title to show for it. Some guys never get that one title but we're talking about Baby Jesus here. Like an above comment said, '20 mx looked like AC and Sexton were going to be the guys. And AC had Chase covered.
I think Kawi should get a fill-in rider for the remaining SX season to give AC the chance to fully heal so that he can make one last, healthy go for outdoors. If he does well and stays healthy, then great. If not, he can at least walk away knowing he did all he could before hanging it up.

So hard to watch how his career has gone recently, especially considering where it was about 3 years ago. His 2019 season had him finally putting it all together on the 250 with the motocross championship over a super formidable opponent in Dylan Ferrandis. He then shows flashes of elite speed in his rookie 450 SX season... sustains an injury and misses a few rounds, but overall a decent first series in the class. He then rides like a seasoned vet in 2020 outdoors and finishes less than a single moto behind Zach O in the championship. It really was looking like he was next up, as many thought guys like Eli, Anderson, & Roczen didn't have much left in the tank and we didn't know how quickly Jett would rise up to the elite level of the sport.
That video was heartbreaking to watch. Everyone says he is a very smart guy. Assuming he is not financially set for life, Maybe he should go to college and get a normal job. I remember Zach Osborne saying before his career resurgence that he was considering going to college and getting an engineering degree.
Is that the same video a few posts above that you're talking about? If so it doesn't sound like he's depressed at all, seems like he's dealing with it pretty well and he talks about how grateful he is, of course he's gunna sound a bit bummed when he wants to be out there racing though.
Having an injury is no joke. It just sucks
Not sure it’s relevant but it reminds me of a tennis player named Jack Sock. He was rising up through the ranks and then got a freak thumb injury. It derailed him and he hasn’t since made it back.
He would have to have been pretty stupid with his money to be in a position where he would have to get a job.. I’m sure he wouldn’t NEED to work again.
however I’m sure he would fit in literally anywhere in the industry..
That's stopping him racing at the moment but the larger problem is the numbness problem in his arm.
Apparently Adam is financially very well set up. He's a property investor.
Nah, he's too smart for the mx industry.
It would be so interesting to see a detailed accounting of the costs and earnings of an entire mx career for a rider of his caliber. In the early years parents pour money into their kids. They hope it pays off. In the earning years, even with a factory ride it looks like lifestyle creep can trip up a lot of them, plus supporting the entourage. Real $ comes from race wins and championships and that's a very small group of riders. I'll bet that the number that can leave the sport and live on their investments is pretty small. Hopefully AC is one.
would take mega-bank for these guys to fully retire for life. You gotta remember he's barely 30y of age. that's literally 50y of retirement to fund. Also, a 30y old man doing "nothing" for the rest of his life isn't ideal (even though we think we might love it, the lack of purpose would kill a man).
AC was/IS still one of the most elite riders in the sport.. It's only over when he says it's over.
Go AC#9
I know this finger injury is on a different arm but did he even fully recover from the nerve issues he's been dealing with on his other arm? Dude has all the talent and ability in the world but I think all the injuries has fractured his confidence. He's still a top 10 guy easily but as far as race wins unfortunately I don't see it happening. If he's healthy he absolutely deserves a spot on the factory team. Hopefully he can put together a few more years and stay relatively healthy but no doubt he has a future in the booth when he's done racing. I was extremely impressed the times he was on the broadcast. Mix him with Weege and that's an all-star cast IMO.
I never really understood how AC got this much "retire/hang it up/go do broadcast stuff" talk when every thread about McAdoo, Forkner, etc. is talking about how this is finally gonna be their year. And those guys are still on 250s
the rumor when I was a kid was that AC had already made $1M before getting off superminis. I heard rumors he got $250k from verizon and $60k to have his helmet painted last year of superminis. Given its hard to separate fact from fiction, but retirement should not be a problem with multiple millions of dollars likely growing in index funds or whatever. keep in mind the average guy is living on $20-30k a year after paying the tax man and the rent. Most everyone following AC can just tell that he has moved on mentally from the sport and its somewhat obvious he has been riding/doing enough to keep his kawi contract as long as he can. A good string of results back in 2020 didn't hurt.
He just turned 27 last fall. I agree with your post though.
Everyone thinks he is going to be gifted a job in the booth. You think they are going to give Ricky the boot for Adam? That job probably doesn't pay much either.
Pit Row
I often wonder how much these guys made when they raced small bikes growing up. Saw a video of Carson Mumford where he bought a house at 15-16 years old in California.
AC is the BEST and an honest straight up hard working, prideful young man . He deserves better days and I hope they are within sight. If not, then let him decide that and IMHO people need to stay off his ass.
Flame away on me if you wish, I can Fuggn take it
LOL That would be some BIG news.
AC out of SX and Out of the closet with news of his new sex.
If the rumors about Prado to monster Kawi are true that might be Prado taking AC seat. I’m not sure Forkner has earned that ride yet.
A new team isn't going to fix his physical problems. He has damaged nerves in one elbow. If he was unhappy with Kawi it would make sense to change teams. A new team might not want an Adam Cianciarilo that isn't 100% race ready.
I remember the wash out at Millville in a spot that is common. It’s slick hard under the soft sand on top. He then said my elbow I can’t hold on. His hand didn’t come off the bars causing the wash out. He went in to get his funny bone nerve worked on. Bad idea I had almost 3 hrs of a knife cutting my nerve. My pinky is 100% numb next finger 85 % then numb threw my hand into my wrist. Nerve damage is permanent. I didn,t think I could ever ride a fast pace again. I was surprised that I can but I barely squeeze the bars. Surgery 13 yrs ago it never got better. But I always found a way too work a Very physical job. I broke my hand 12 times, a few fingers, game keepers thumb, smashed 1 in of a finger off. And never missed a day on the world’s strongest hhg rig working 30 days straight. Because once you don’t show up you’re replaced. It’s the real world. Enter the trucking world everyone has big injuries & keeps trucking.
When this season is over, he will not longer be racing for a living. He isn’t worth enough at this point to collectively earn the $1 million it would require for him to shoulder the pain and risk necessary to make it worth his time. I have no idea what he’ll be doing next year, but he won’t be racing Supercross for a living. He has earned a 7 figure income for long enough that he should have plenty of savings to make the transition to whatever he chooses to do next a comfortable one. Although I’m sure he didn’t accomplish all he hoped to, he certainly had a successful career.
I don't know if being a property investor automatically qualifies a person as well set up.
A few months off won’t fix his nerve issues.
Fair point. I should have added he is a successful property investor who has done well/is doing well from his investments.
It helped roczen. I understand that it won’t cure his physical ailments. But, imagine knowing you can’t perform at 90% on a team that you’re required to perform at 110% each weekend? If he wasn’t on a factory team, these conversations about results wouldn’t be as frequent. A mental reset, with less pressure, allowing to perform at a pace you’re comfortable with while building up the strength and conditioning needed won’t hurt.
I can confirm first hand if you invest in the right kinds of properties in the right kinds of areas and accurately run your numbers ahead of time, take advantage of the various tax breaks at your disposal you can be VERY well set up .
I started investing in properties at 35 and retired 15 years later.
