2024.5 rmz 450

9/19/2023 12:45pm

I had a 2011 and loved it. Only time it felt heavy was putting it on the stand. I put like 80 hours on it and never had any issues. Not even valve adjustment. These RMZs are great bikes. But it would be nice to at least get an electric starter for them.

Earlier in the year.  Fun fact, it was ridden by RC in arenacross opening ceremonies when he was still associated with Suzuki.  I have signed JGR/RC4 plastics and the frame is signed.

Most of its weight stock trim is the exhaust. But the engine casings in that thing are what’s heavy ultimately, and probably a little of the aluminum fuel tank. So swap out for a carbon tank, exhaust, hubs, hardware, seat foam, and I’m sure it is down 5-10lbs from stock. I vaguely remember hearing Reed mention it wasn’t the lightest but it road light and it was a good bike from his JGR Suzuki

I remember either reading or listening to a podcast about KR's old RMZ from 16 and they didn't shave a bunch of weight off. They said when you start shaving weight in different spots, that it can upset the chassis. And I think it was MXA that said it was still heavy taking off of the stand. Not saying that is still the case now, but just something I remember from a prior Bike Check or test on his old RMZ.

I also remember Keefer discussing the new RMZ's.

E-Start, Hydro Clutch, weight loss to compensate.

I'd assume new plastic look as well.

curious what the rough total for full redesign through to production costs

then compare that with estimated total sales in 1-2 years

My buddy was a wrench for Babbit’s Kawasaki AX team during this time and he framed that bike from new and made sure it was right for RC.

I remember he was pumped to do it and gave me a call after he was done.

Amazing what happens when you invest a little in racing to prove your bike at the top level.

They probably don’t even have dedicated staff and resources to do it it at this point. I assume they’d have to reassign employees on other, more profitable products. So the math isn’t only that cost, it includes either new hires or moving people off other products / projects.

I believe suzuki even told dealers that 24's would have e-start and then dealers were surprised when it was announced and they were still just the same. Maybe there was a production delay or something?

I’m pretty sure the Suzukis get a little heavier every year:

2017: 240lbs

2018: 241lbs

2019: 242.4lbs

2020: 243lbs

2021: 244.3lbs

2022: 245lbs

2023: 246.2lbs

How much weight will the electric start add?

2024: 268.5lbs

Love a Suzuki, but that's funny 😂

Sorry guys, there's never been a .5 model of anything, why would Suzuki be the first to start that?

Yes e-start is nice but being a moto bike I don't see why that's even a big deal. If I rode strictly moto I would probably have one but kind of need e-start on a 4 stroke in the woods.

Suzuki does a really good (or bad) job of recycling old stuff especially lately. Half of their street bike models are using 20 year old motors that have been slightly changed and tuned differently.

They had e-start on their DRZ 400, I’m sure it wouldn’t be anything to put it on.

DRZ engine a whole other animal huge and heavy totally different in every way.

They had the RMX 450, their offroad bike with estart with very similar engine to the RMZ but it had the cam chain tensioner in the head so they had room for the starter on top of the cases. The RMZ has the tensioner in the cylinder jug which would be in the way of the starter on cases used for RMX.

Ive been told that the way the layout of the RMX head is it limits power/flow quite a bit so its not worth adding for the electric start.

Thank you, Ken Roczen. It’s the old “proof’s in the pudding” at work.

BRO if you think Roczens pudding is a bone stock 2008-2023 RMZ-450 then you are delusional. That bike is far far from the outdated dinosaur you see on a show room floor.

ALSO 95% of vitards cant ride an RMZ to its fullest potential.

It's an RMZ with motor work and custom suspension.

Damn Seth, I didnt realize every component of his bike was stock. Wheels, brakes, controls, exhaust, the whole nine yards.

I'm going to stop by my local mechanic shop today and tell him I want some motor work and custom suspension, then I can race ken roczen.
