ODI Lockon's vs. Glue On Grips

Every time I use glue I end up with a greased donkey d!ck. Maybe I used the wrong stuff.

Yes on the vibration. I hate them, sometimes they hurt my hands when landing a jump. I use the Tag Rebound grips, they're amazing

3m window weld and 2 wires works great, but now I use my air compressor to put them on dry with 2 wires and it holds up well.

I use thin grips so I poke a small hole in the end of the grip so they don’t balloon and stretch out while using air to put them on

I used Renthal or Pro Taper no-waffle mediums for many years with a preference to the Renthal.

3M "Super Weatherstripping Adhesive" with three pieces of 0.025" stainless loc-wire was my install method.
Some contact cleaner or air to install the grips without glue does work well too.

I got into the ODI grips and I think they're ok, but I honestly prefer the feel of the Renthal.
I have Emigs on my KX500 and I have the ODI grips from the KTM OEM parts on all my other bikes.
Frankly, I've stuck with the ODI because they're so durable.  I go through grips pretty fast.

When grips get too fat, they can cause arm pump.
I ride with a lot of leg/core and I think I don't land heavy on my hands when I'm doing things right.  I believe that's why the ODI's don't hurt my hands. 

I do have some Pro-Taper lock-ons on my YZ125 currently.  They were smaller diameter, so I decided to test them.  I feel like they offer the least vibration damping of any grip, although I love the smaller diameter.
 

Totally agree.  I prefer Renthal Kevlar grips.  I do use lock ons with my mountain bike though in the same compound though.

If the grips move at all under my hands I get arm pump. This eliminates any benefit from vibration reduction with glue on grips. I am lock on only now.

Torc1 Pillow Top, same advantages as ODI lock on, but they have excellent cushioning, and grip, even in mud.

I hated the lockons because of the vibration. Pro taper pillow tops with glue and wired in two spots on each grip is my preferred setup. 

Renthal Dual compound Kevlar.

If you have big hands, they fit well, and they feel good on the bars.

For years, my Dad put my grips on dry with wire. They would always eventually move.
When I started doing them myself, I use the small renthal glue that's like super glue and wire. Never move.

I tried lock-ons on my old YZF a few years ago and didn't like the feel. I also thought that throttle cable cam just didn't feel the same and that bothered me too. Then I had my Husky and used lock-on grips. With that bike, I just kept putting new ones on because once they started to wear down, I could feel more vibration/ energy transfer. Now that I'm on YZs again, I went back to glue-on grips. Aside from feeling a little old school w glue and safety wire, the feel on the bike when riding, is worth the trade off for me. I like lock-ons on my mtb but otherwise, I just like the feel of standard, glued on grips.

I always felt like lock-on's were hard as a rock compared to regular glue on grips.

Renthal Kevlar is always a good choice.

Hairspray has worked since the decades old BMX days, if you need something quick. But I always used Renthal grip glue and 2-3 wires.

My buddy used to run the Pro Taper pillow tops back around 2007 / 2008. 
I liked the cushion, but I felt like they gave a vague feel and were too fat for my shorter fingers.

I think that's an example of riding style and hand size vs the grip size and feel.
He came around to running smaller grips a few years ago and doesn't run pillow tops, but I think he said he feels too much vibration with the ODI Lock-Ons.

It's funny that I run rigid bar mounts (OEM YZ125 and YZ250 triple clamps are not rubber isolated).   I just bought a new GasGas MC350F and it's rigid bar mounted.  Keefer tells us that the stock GasGas / KTM Neken bar transmits too much vibration and that it's trash.  I run the Pro Taper Evo on all my other bikes.  I only have one hour on the MC350F, but it felt ok.  Likely I'll buy some Pro Tapers soon.

All that to say that it's interesting how things that bug some of us are totally ok for others who are bothered by a whole different set of fine details.

I do think the ultimate grip is a glue on with some kind of harder plastic end-cap or plug bonded to the rubber.

Glue on the bar, and in the grip, twist it to make sure it is everywhere. Use liberally. Three wires. Take the throttle tube off after you apply, remove glue from the inside of the tube.

None of the other things like 3m adhesive, spray paint, hair spray, wd40 have worked for me.

Sure, I hate doing it, but I prefer the feel of the Renthals to ODI, mostly because of what you mentioned, the ODI is not as long, and the outer edge is too raised.

I've found that a little square of electrical tape on the end of the throttle tube helps keep the glue out.
It does trap some air in the grip as you slide it on, so you have to burp that air bubble out or poke a needle through the end.
 

I always wondered how some were bothered by lock-on grips because they had a tube inside the left grip while all grips have a throttle tube on the right side. Are you just feeling it on the left side? I have been using lock-ons for a while now, but I sure did love the dual-compound Renthal half-waffles grips too. The convenience of the lock-on grips sure is nice though. 

Having recently switched to my first 4 stroke, I've been noticing the same thing. I know the KTM's vibrate a decent amount to begin with, plus lock on grips I too am wondering if I need to switch things up with grips and bars. My hands have been getting tingly

ODI lock ons suck. Tried several different sets, yes they vibrate more. The compound they use is also hard as fuck and tears my hands up even when I am riding alot. The only lock ons that I have ever found work well are the pro taper ones. They are soft but wear out quick. 

I buy the soft pro taper glue on grips. They are like 7 bucks. Put them on w/ compressed air and wire, can change a set in under 10 mins. 

Yeah I guess I get down voted to hell by the viards for using grip glues I bought from local dealers.

Spray paint is an option also.

I’ve been running ODI half waffle lock on grips since they came out. I have no idea why anyone buys any other grips to be honest. They get more tacky (better) as they age, just like a fine wine. 

I actually just went back to glue on grips, due to how hard the lock-ons felt.

Not a fan of the lock ons

they vibrate more than glue on grips

They are slightly larger in diameter than lock on grips

if the Allen screw comes loose you are fucked

I don't like the lock on grips because i like my throttle tube to feel smooth as silk.  I use the Works Connection throttle tube with bearing and i get a whole season without having to perform maintenance on my throttle.   Works Connection uses different cams for each bike and the cams are included.  Transferring to a new bike is no problem.  

Maybe it is because I use Pro Taper bars mounted to the stock rubber insulated bar mounts on my KX450, but I didn’t notice any vibration.

Zero interest in using lock ons on a dirtbike. For MTB's they are great. Ball bearing throttle tube and Renthal Kevlar for me. No issues. Mostly safety wire just for looks 

It's the lip on the outer edge of the grip. It's on both sides, but it's more annoying on the left, as my hand is positioned a bit differently. It's much larger than you get with a glue on grip.

That really doesn't have anything to do with it being lock on or glue on. That's just the grip maker adding the lip on the end and are maybe a tad shorter. I saw some lock on Turner grips with a small lip on the end and the Protaper grips are also smaller on the ends. As more and more start making them, you will probably be able to get some you like.
