What do you do about gas smell in a sprinter van?

Build a bulkhead to divide the passenger area from the bikes.  There was a long thread on motovans here sometime back with some great ideas.

Not just unpleasant, could be dangerous too if you’re using the really nasty stuff

You leave the wife home 

You will never smell it when you're in the van. You will only smell it when the interior of the vehicle gets hot and the gasoline vapors expand and vent from the can like if you leave the car off and let it sit in the sun. If you're driving and its comfortable inside the cabin for you like when you're using the AC it will never vent.

      Lock box mounted outside. If your wife is like mine, she can smell 2 drops of race gas in our garage from the end of our street. Not worth the aggravation, move it outside the vehicle.

I never smell it from the bike back there, Ive had it stay back there for weeks and my van is daily driver. I will notice it if I leave the gas can back there for a a few days, so I always try to remove it when I get home. And when my pitbike fell over and gas wasnt off so was leaking 🤦

Chicken fertilizer.

I have one of these on my sprinter. Works perfect never smell fuel 

Put a vent on the roof, takes no time to fit and will draw all the fumes out. 

Or U4. Best cologne in the race world.

Breathe in all the vapor for years (leaded race gas is best) then become a leading vi-tard

When I had my van built, the builder installed a thin rubber membrane around the entire cargo area, effectively sealing off the cargo are from the cabin in the front.  Might be a bit excessive relative to the solutions mentioned above, but I can tell you I've never smelled any fumes in the front - when driving, sitting, in hot weather, cold weather, etc.  I once had a 5gal jug of fuel tip over and spill all over the floor - even then there was no smell up front.

One time…. I bought a 15gal drum of Ultimate 2 and had to get up to San Fran for SX. 8hrs with my head out the window was not a good time. Sold the fuel to another rider at the races. 
Like someone said, rubber seal the partition and put a roof vent in. Depending on fuel, you might never be 100% fragrant free. 

Let's call these the Ford Pinto solution.  

Also, the bikes themselves are going to vent as much as the can. More, if you have one of those EPA cans.

Exhaust fan helps with cargo fumes and is just a nice comfort item in general.

Speaking of nasty gas smells, I miss the days of walking around a National with great smelling high octane gas. Now it’s just nasty vapor smells. - Rant over 

I smelled gas in a company car once ya might say.  Had a 5 gal can in the trunk and seam on bottom of the can split and soaked the carpet trunk really good.  Could barely drive it.  Had to rip carpet out etc.  Got lucky it was up for replacement and got a new company car.  Gasoline smell is hard to get rid of.  

I went to buy a car in Michigan years ago... at a medium sized junk yard. Im walking with my wife and the owner of the lot from the back corner to the front office to purchase the car. Lets just say that "conversation" wasnt this guys best asset. So to break the silence I take notice of a couple of junked out Corvairs in scrap condition and say to my wife "Hey honey.. check that out... arent those the cars that get hit in the trunk, blow up and kill everybody ?" We both laugh a little uncomfortably and he does nothing... just keeps walking. 

We finally get to the office and in a HUGE hand painted sign right over the door... "HOME OF THE GREAT LAKES CORVAIR CLUB". Apparently I had just met the active President of the Great Lakes Corvair Club. The rest of the transaction was pretty quiet.

I say leave the wife at home, and find a new one at the track that likes race fuel

I‘ve had my bike in my open van for years and my wife hates the smell too, so here’s what I di. Close the breather hose of the tank of your bike and always use those military type steel gas cans. If the bike has a carb, empty the carb before loading up. Closing the breather hose mad the biggest difference!

I use an express van and don’t smell any gas unless it spills. I have no divider. And that’s pump gas and renegade sx2 that I’ll have in there at times.

I had a transit with a wall built and we didn't smell any fuel. We were running either t4 or Pro6 so pretty potent fuels. We only would smell the fuel when we would put the bikes away hot and start driving with them still hot. 

Back in the 2-stroke/carb days, my buddy would lay his bike over to drain most of the float bowl and then he would stick 1 nail in each vent hose on the carb and 1 in the tank breather.  This worked great for pump gas.  But these race fuels in the states, the mega-stink comes right through the plastic tank.  Even if all the race fuel is returned to the steel can, just the little bit that seeps out of the plastic cap or the residual in the bike will give me a migraine.

In my buddies sprinter we just put 3 1 inch holes near the bottom of the quarter panel on each side. We usually have two bikes, two pit bikes, 1-2 plastic jugs with pump gas and a plastic jug with 110 or C12 and we get no smells in the cab when driving. Just a basic partition wall.
