If Jett has landed himself a deal for a Fortnite skin, he's going to make millions and millions of dollars. And there are dirtbikes in the game, would be interesting if they pull together an in game CRF450

No doubt Honda would demand their cut.

Don’t get me wrong, there is probably a few instances of some stupid money going to a couple of people, but I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that a lot of people are adding quite a few zeros to their actual receipts in order to build up some hype.

I’m not sure that any actual racers can be all that marketable outside of the core moto market.  They’d need to devote too much time to other things, and likely take away from their moto preparations and training.  Pastrana had the easiest opportunity to do it because he was still riding a bike, at least, but even that seemed to take too much focus away from racing to continue that as his main occupation.

I don’t think that Jett has reached the Pastrana/McGrath level of popularity outside of the moto community yet, but he could soon. I think that he’d have to make a career change (racing cars?) to go any higher than them, though.

I’m not doubting that the claims are of $50M per year, but I am extremely skeptical of that much money actually being actually paid out. And there is no real way to verify it, either.

But why would Jett reach the McGrath or Pastrana level of stardom? Because he’s fast on a dirt bike?

McGrath lived in Southern California during the rise of the alternative/punk rock counter culture and knew people who had ties to Hollywood while this new scene was seen as being edgy and cool. It was a set of pretty unique circumstances that really allowed for MC to become a somewhat main stream name.

Pastrana blew up because of freestyle motocross in the height of the X Games and a similar pop culture trend that MC thrived from. It was another similar unique circumstance.

Not sure what Jett could do as far as bringing in massive known companies. Like stated above the time era was different. Remember Bam Margera and how massive he was? Different eras

I didn’t predict that Jett ‘would’ match either McGrath or Pastrana, but he ‘could’ if the right conditions arise. There are some that just couldn’t get to that level of celebrity even if all the stars aligned perfectly. Jett isn’t one of those guys.

I don’t think that he really has anything that stands out that would make him rise above either of those two, though.

There are favourable circumstances - we are deep in the era of digital media and online marketing and advertising.  Jett (or anyone else) has access to online audiences that the likes of McGrath and Pastrana could only dream of.

No, MVMT will never be the next "Rolex" or even a "Rolex."

Obviously it’s not Rolex. I meant Jett’s progression of sponsors lol

What makes him stand out to people who don’t watch motocross? How is he going to get the attention of people who don’t watch this sport?

Me thinks we peaked with MC & Pastrami… RC & Stew kept it going somewhat but seems like been on the decline, as far as marketing goes since. Where are all the Aussie corporations?

What benefit would Australian companies get from advertising in the US and why would they use an athlete who doesn't compete in Australia to advertise to a domestic audience?

I think you're massively overestimating the existence of Australian companies that aren't owned by multinationals that already have a US arm.

I think he was saying Jett is sponsored by MVMT now but down the road he could be sponsored by Rolex.

The MVMT deal is pretty smart… keeps him away from collecting half a dozen Rolexes in the meantime before the real money starts coming in.

That Fortnite deal ought to be a huge payday.

I doubt it is. It’s probably not much at all. Fortnite doesn’t gain much by having Jett in the game. Jett is getting more out of that deal in exposure. They may even be paying a little to help get him in the game.

Jett's probably not going to make much from the Fortnite deal but there's no way he's paying to be in it

Nice list. I believe nobody brought in a big outside sponsor in their rookie year in the premier class. Even though Villopoto and Tomac didn't in their careers I don't feel that detracts from their legacy, and it would be just fine if Jett didn't bring anyone in.

I don't think it was his rookie year but Villopoto had Volcolm or maybe that was a team sponsor. I don't remember forsure and maybe it wasn't the most unique outside sponsor as they are in a lot of action sports but I don't remember seeing it too often in moto. I always thought it looked cool on his helmet.

Villo also had DC

Jeremy McGrath is far more marketable, and he struggled to get that big sustainable outside sponsor.

The problem is with the agents and the good ole boy network that runs this sport. Until you get another guy like Sepkovick interested in the sport, it will be business as usual.

Kevin Moranz has brought in more outside sponsors/interest than any of the current agents, maybe they should go to him and see how he does it.

This is the truth. I got my start in the action sports industry and was amazed at how half assed and backwoods its run after entering the real business world.  The thing is the big players like red bull and monster know how it operates and how to exploit it for their own gains. The amount of control RedBull had over our athletes was insane.
