The Shop
DeCal Works Huge Plastic Inventory of UFO and Polisport kits.
Herlings, too many to injuries to list but keeps coming back……for now.
Harry Everts.
Polio survivor, who went on to get 4 World Motocross Championships.
Stefan Everts - 10 World Championships, with a few very, Very nasty injuries, and, an encounter with one of the biggest crooks in Motocross, who almost destroyed his career / took a sh**load of money from him - and that's not counting that MX Vampire Luongo. Then, to contract Malaria at a charity even in Africa, to loose a fair few Toes / part of a foot/ or both feet. And, managing to not stuff up his Son's career / life by being too much of a Moto Dad.
Doug Henry.
Herlings - the injuries he's come back from, are just horrendous.
RC
For me RC is the one.
Roczen
To go through what he's been through and have the will to ride , I would say that takes mental steel
Easy one, DeCoster died on the operating table and came back to win.
I'd say MA800 has to be considered. Battled for the championship outdoors with his knee cap wired together, got ran over by who knows how many bikes and comes back wearing a "speed bump" butt patch.
Doug Henry
This thread is full of ppl who don't know the difference between physically tough, mentally tough and just plain old fast mx'er
Hakan Carlqvist. Fought and beat the HRC giant on an aircooled outdated YZ, and not afraid to get a shovel and bury that YZ in front of the Yamaha mechanics when he first tried it out in testing, to show them what he thought of it.
Hard as nails and as physically strong as any rider before or since, and cool enough to stop for a beer while leading a GP at the most iconic track ever. RIP Carla
RC, RV, Dung against Tomac, Tomac against Chase. The mental strength to not fold is definitely overlooked in the sport and not talked about enough
Looking through the responses it seems that you could categorise “mental toughness” into three areas:
- ability to push further and harder than your competitors to win, even when you aren’t always the best or fastest - RC/RV/MC
- ability to keep coming back even though you are regularly pipped at the post for wins or championships, and eventually establish your own greatness - Reed, Dungey, maybe Windham?
- ability to overcome severe adversity; in the case of MX that’s mostly career or life threatening injuries - Henry, Roczen
Maybe Jett is demonstrating another kind - the ability when under pressure to calmly assess the threat from another rider and decide on how to respond, all while running at the front of the race.
Great post
With Doug Henry mentioned as mentally tough for his coming back to racing after horrible injury then I think Trey Canard and Ken Roczen should be be mentioned as well. Cooper Webb is definitely mentally tough as his racecraft is next level.
Pit Row
Doug Henry is the sentimental choice here for sure. I also agree with the Ryan Dungey pick because of my actual definition of mentally tough (to push through adversity and failure to succeed).
I have to offer up my own personal opinion on the most mentally tough single performance (I know this isn't what OP asked).....Ryan Villipoto at Budds Creek MXON was unbelievable. I witnessed it in person, and it's still the best raceday performance I've ever seen. To win 2 races by that margin on inferior equipment is next level.
His MOJO hit a false neutral over the triple this year
Mentally toughest has to be Hannah..
Webb, Villipoto, Carmichael
I'm going with Dungey and Hannah. I don't think James Stewart has been mentioned but that guy could gather his shit back up after some gnarly crashes and head back to the front whereas a lot of riders would have just been mentally crushed and settled in until the moto was over.
I was never a Villopoto fan…but I have give him credit for his mental toughness. Dungey too! He took second to RV SO damn many times…only to come back to race him just as hard! The incident of his Suzuki not starting, and him coming back from damn near a lap down still blows my mind! They, and RC are the ones my mind immediately goes to. Freaking animals that refused to lose!
Reed's determination and belief in himself to compete against giants like Carmichael and Stew always stood out to me. For a few years, Stew was almost always faster than him, but Reed would come back every week and battle him hard, sometimes forcing him into mistakes and thus keeping himself within reach of the championship. Lots of guys going against prime Stew in SX would simply give up and settle for 2nd, but Reed was persistent enough to continuously battle every single round against 2006-2009 James, who was possibly the fastest SX rider in history.
Webb is a bit similar to Reed, in that even during his best seasons ('19, '21, '23), he usually didn't have the qualifying or single lap throwdown speed that his main title competitors had (Tomac, Roczen, Sexton), but he didn't let it rattle him and focused on figuring out the track and its breakdown as the night went on. So many times, he would be in a main event, several seconds behind a guy that had been faster than him all day, but would make up that time difference and pass him with a lap or two to go. Many racers would chalk a race like that up to "not my day", but Webb never seemed to subscribe to that. He seems to think every day could be his day, even if there have been 5-6 guys faster than him for 90% of that day.
Sorry, I know that was a bit long-winded.
Just to name a few.
RC for his grit, for being able to dig even deeper and train harder so he could beat JS.
Roczen for being able to come back from all the shit he has gone through.
When it comes to Webb? What are you guys smoking? The only time he is mentally tough is when he is winning, and as soon as it gets a little tough he backs out of it. (Out doors last season and this one). With his ”i get payed to race so i race” comment, he sure not looks mentally tough…
Jett is really on to something, being mentally tough enough to stack up 16-0 so far this season as a rookie.
Yep Doug Henry absolutely top, none of these guys have come back from being paralyzed to race again, only to become paralyzed again and get back on the bike without the use of his legs. He is a Champion and under the definition of metal toughness in the dictionary IS a picture of Doug Henry.
I just wish it didn't happen a second time for him, I wish he would have walked away but that's not who his is.
RV and RC.
RV was a tough son of a bitch - I am always surprised when the convo is brought up about Stew (recently in the reracables with Canard) about how he was going to win or die. I always felt that way about RV. Nobody was going to outwill him to win.
What a brain-dead, clueless comment. You talking about the same Rodman that beat the absolute piss out of everyone in the early 90's so bad (Among others) that they had to basically modify the rules of the game to stop?
He is literally widely known and recognized as being one of the toughest players in the history of the NBA and probably most sports lmao.
Doug Henry then Roczen. I believe you have to be the toughest mentally to come back from injury. Doug wouldn’t let paralysis stop him! I followed him at a DITD GP at Pala bitd. Absolutely Amazing how fast he was going
