Thanks for the well wishes, that was many years ago and my knees are currently fine. It's great that you have worked to help keep riding areas open. It sounds like that is your job in that position to paint riding in a positive light. To say that it isn't dangerous is inaccurate though. You can't really manipulate what the media is going to portray for clicks (gnarly stunts). It's no different for other sports though. Snowboarding is extremely dangerous so should it not be in the Olympics because the public could see someone get seriously hurt?

In this part of the country, side by sides and four wheelers are gaining miles and miles of trails annually, with specific exclusions of dirt bikes on those trails. The domestic manufacturers of those products, Polaris, and CanAm, do everything to control the media outtake of their products as a safe family sport, despite them arguably being less so. And despite many times only having a season a matter of weeks long snowmobiles are the same. These vehicles are killing our sport in terms of trails gained, KILLING us. It is not about saying the sport is safe, it is about not promoting the dangerous side. Nobody is saying our sport is totally safe, but if you think Pastrana's TV spots are not seen by people deciding who gets to ride where, I am sorry, but you are simply mistaken. Perhaps you think it is a good idea to show Pastrana and his crew's videos to the powers that be, and allow them to give the non-riding public a perception of our sport, that this is a positive image for our sport? Then I have to respectfully disagree with you. No offense intended. It's important to me my grandkid's have all the rights to ride, as I did.

If you are from NY, the chance of new trails on public land is slim. And it is all about image, and motorcyclist's lack of organization and agreement. Of course, if Pennsylvania's new Catwissa creek development work's out for Pa., it may further our cause in NY. Google it, it's gonna be cool.

If I have this correct. Cookies “media” said rumor of AC nerve issue still? Someone at the test track saw him put little laps in?

Were you watching Motocross and Supercross when he was racing 125s? He was absolutely a legend in his day because of motocross. Seeing him hit the supercross triples on his 125 when nobody else was, was insane. Then blitz the whoops like they were braking bumps. Then be doing Indian airs two weeks later on ESPN. Then on Jay Leno with McGrath racing in the parking lot. Travis was/is a moto legend that was able to branch out and become a legend in other forms, too.
G.Bailey,s yt has some great vids of Travis. I watched 01 Unadilla 1st moto lastnight. He was exciting to watch riding all out doing stuff no one thought of doing. At 17.09, 19.05, 20.09,29.05 etc that is threading the needle. Amazing sounding RM125 with a stacked gate Larry Ward on the 250f had pressure on TP . Remember Larry beat Stewart 2 or 3 yrs later. Grant battled Larry then pulled away and went after Travis. Mike Brown always charging 100%. I had a 01 RM a revalve was no where stiff enough . The rm,s where so squirrelly when you pushed hard.

During the SuperMotocross series press conference a couple months ago, DB said there were weird rumors floating around the event about AC retiring and I can’t remember if it was on that same show or one of Matthes’s around the same time where someone said that the nerve problem is still lingering.

Besides the weird financial thing surround the RMATV/KTM team and Baggett, if I’m remembering correctly, a main factor in Blake hanging it up was that he just couldn’t get his hand/thumb right and he couldn’t race to his full potential anymore. There’s a video of him at the Lakewood national his last year where he got a great start and was leading or at least near the front and you can see him frustratingly either wave the guys behind him by over a jump or he does this weird like throwing in the towel gesture over one of the jumps before fading backwards.

Hopefully the nerve issue isn’t the same nail in the coffin for AC and it’s finally fixed. At least since the original rumors there are videos of him riding again but I suppose time will tell how things are really going.

I know of 2 people that saw it, but about 2-3 weeks ago AC9 put out an Instagram story stating he was heartbroken and sorry, but he was injured and not racing Supercross. I tried to refresh and listen again, but as soon as it was there, the story disappeared. I did see a November 2022 date, but I can’t remember the day. I immediately came here to see if anyone posted about it, but crickets. I didn’t think of it again until I saw this on Vital.

ya, i like TP199 but i dont think hes a good role model either, tbh.

riding with injuries and concussions is not cool
My parents not allowing me to ride with broken bones or concussions is what we did back in my day. Guess you kids these days rely on people you’ve never met to influence your decisions.

Exactly. Travis has done more for our sport than any other rider ever, he brought SX/MX/FMX to the mainstream. Letterman Show, Leno Show, Nitro Circus show on MTV, Nitro Circus Movie, and now a Nitro Circus Live show. Not to mention he was the biggest attraction at the X Games from 99 to whenever he stopped. Simply Put he was the X Games for a long time. A lot of people know who Travis is, outside of our small sport no one has a clue who AC is.

Yes, Travis has done a lot for this sport. From paralyzing his friend in a Corvette wreck, breaking his own mother's neck, and numerous, very public Wile E. Coyote stunts gone wrong involving him and friends, he hasn't exactly sent parents to the shops to buy PWs in droves. Travis seems like a great guy, with a lot of deep underlying emotional issues involving acceptance and approval. I hate to say but I would think it is hard to deny his shenanigans have set back the reputation for safety of this sport immeasurably.
Flatliner wrote:
So you know the details of those incidents?

He's got the sport more mainstream than anyone not named McGrath.
MC did the Jay Leno Show once and a 1 800 Collect commercial that only aired during Supercross races.... he's not even close to Pastrana in popularity.

AC is irrelevant at this point and has always had injuries. Hang it up and heal something finally.

At this point it would behoove Kawasaki for AC to make a decision. If something is actually happening that is. Watch AC come out and say everything is fine and perform well. Nerves are a fickle bitch to say the least

I saw the same thing, some page reposted a 2ish year old post from Adam, he personally commented saying it was old.

But if the rumors are true, it will be a sad deal. Glad he can step away with his health if true, but one of the biggest "what could have been" riders if it ends this way.

I wont see it as "what could have been" but rather as "another amateur prodigy that did not fulfill the hype". I like the guy, but as others had mentioned, he misses so much races, that not having him there is irrelevant, and don't come at me with "the sport is better with him", we just had an amazing Outdoor season, great SX season and guess what, him in it wouldn't have made better. I see him staying in the sport to some capacity, he IS a great ambassador for any brand who picks him.

There is probably a lot to it. In addition to the emotional weight of the decision of giving up his goals it's possible he has career ending injury insurance that could come into play here too. I think there is a lot of hoops to jump through if that is in fact a factor.

"Not fulfilling the hype" would apply if he just wasn't fast enough, but he's routinely the fastest in SX before his arm causes him to fade/lose the front. He hasn't been healthy outdoors since 2020, and he won multiple rounds. The series would 100% be better with a healthy AC. Unfortunately he's rarely healthy, hence "what could have been".

What would your criteria be for a "what could have been" rider if injuries make them irrelevant?

No it's in maine another place going down the drain. In ny we're just outlaws I gave up trail riding years ago and I don't even ride mx there. At this point I don't bother to register my sleds anymore.
