I guess it's him and Dowd. Wasn't he big dude and race a 4 stroke 501 Husky? I do remember him being a badass and didn't he put in a great ride at the MXDN in the late 90's or early 2000s?
He was most well known for his days on the Husaberg then later on the new KTM.

That's right I always forget about the Husabergs. Smets was a stud.

Decoster was 36 in his last season and won his final race. He won a championship at 31 and 32 years old.

Smets was a bad dude muscling those beefcake of 4-Strokes around for sure. I remember how damn loud that thing seemed blasting past, now it's just the usual. That's another frequently-opened can of worms though

Pretty sure John Dowd entered his first local race at Southwick in the novice class at age 18. Some pro careers end before that age.
I was racing when JD began and it was 85’ if memory serves. That would’ve made him 20 or 21. He joined us in the expert class in a years time and was winning by 88’.

We used to ride together in his first few years. I’d already been expert for a couple years and was a top five guy and improving. I remember taking John out to the sand pits and doing some crazy cliff climbs and drops and stuff. Even though he didn’t have the experience yet he’d just follow me once and he’d have it dialed and he’d be ready to do something bigger. It was really easy to see he had ‘it’

So, he’s the best 30+ for me.

I immediately thought of Gary Jones, dude was winning national titles well into his 30s I think.

Without reading the thread I am going with either Mike Brown or John Dowd.

Cairoli gets an honorable mention as well.

Fair enough! Just super impressed with the longevity Mike has shown in a sport the burns people out in their late 20’s! Truly shows how much Brownie loves ripping a bike. It’s just awesome. 🤘🏻

Adolf Weil 33 yrs old 3rd 500 gp
34 8th 500 gp
35 2nd 250 gp 1st trans am
36 3rd 500 gp
37 4th 250 gp
38 3rd 500 gp
39 10th 500 gp

Hard to argue against Adolf. 1st place in the Trans am series at 35 years old is quite the accomplishment.
The Trans am series was a fall series that featured the best riders in the world . It started on the east coast and ended on the west coast. If i remember correctly, it was 12 rounds.

Go look up what Stefan Everts achieved after age 30. More top level race wins and championships than any other 30+ year old by far and not in the vet class.

The day he retired he beat James Stewart who is 14 years younger than him.

And a whiner. 95 does nation Emig was whipping his yz250 extra wide to block him. You should hv heard smets he,s dangerous I was faster than him etc. Oh yeah so why is Emig in front of you. 96 he called it the Supercross des nation haha. Lammy is doing heal clickers off the big double that was a quad and smoking everyone.
Dowd is the best 30+ rider Yamaha should’ve never had him race the 125 outdoors . He was a Great 250 rider.

This. Everts is the easy answer (Cairoli comes really close, you could argue for him too).

Brad Anderson is pretty incredible here in the uk.
He raced the British mx2 on a 96 cr250 and still finished in the top 10.
And beat brown and tickle at foxhills and farleigh.

Yes and to boot Brown didn’t have a 125 and put out a message that he was looking for one to “rent” for the day. Pasha stepped up and let Brown use his for the 30 Pro 125.
