It was pretty cold last night and we had 3 kids. The less the walk the better, but the main reason is at about 5 when we got into town traffic was NUTS. Then we finally got to the parking garage and turned in and realized it was $50. No way could I back up back into the street. At that point it was too late.
I fucking hate that the prices are inside, and you can't back out. World wide scam.

Reading this thread reminded me of this old IBM commercial and that whole RFID chip push

No thanks

Maybe all the kooks who took the JAB will line up for the chip?

Parking near any stadium during an event is going to run you around $50, this isn’t a Detroit specific thing. I’m amazed that you guys that have gone to events don’t expect this already, it isn’t a new phenomenon. You are paying for convenience, that’s just business. You could park 2 miles away for a fraction of the cost but you don’t want to because you’ll have to walk. I also wish everything was cheap but you gotta be realistic.

As far as your flashlight goes, it’s weird they wouldn’t let you bring it in assuming they observed it and realized it was just a flashlight but judging by the fact they wouldn’t let you bring it in and you decided to walk it back to your car makes me assume it was a beefy mother fucker and leaves me wondering why anyone would even need a flashlight at SX race anyway, unless your name was Jeff Alessi.

From Cashless to Cash Only in a day at the Corktown 5k and Parade. Thankfully I had a pocket full of cash from last night that I didn’t use. This was at Mercury Bar. I’m glad these small businesses still do this. I think it was just for the day since they were absolutely slammed in there.

Its not beefy at all, its also not that cheap so I didnt want to leave it. Ive had this same light to Ford field at least 4 or 5 other times and to probably close to a dozen concerts that you have to walk through a metal detector. I just set it with my wallet, keys etc slide it across the table and walk through the detector. Some people will look at it and see its a flashlight, others dont even bat an eye, but never been turned away. I also didnt bring it BECAUSE I was going to a SX race, I had it with me at the SX race because its ALWAYS on me. I use it every day for something it seems.

Hmmm, interesting. That’s weird they wouldn’t allow you to bring that in, guess someone was feeling their job was more important that it actually is.

I always said that was one of the reasons to tear down Tiger Stadium and build Comerica Park. Back in the day people who lived by Tiger Stadium had a nice little side hustle, they would park cars in their front yards and charge 10 bucks and you would be damn close to the stadium. Even as a little kid I thought the team probably hated losing all that revenue.

I hate that every single place asks for tips now days…I know it’s how employers justify paying their employees less “hey, sure it’s minimum wage…but you’ll get tips”…and it’s not the employees fault. But it just sucks…I usually leave a 10% tip….just so they don’t spit in my food…but I never like it.

I forget which elected official said this early in covid when some stores quit taking cash. The only legal tender in the US is the paper bills and metal coins, if they refuse to accept that notify such and such.
Call me a boomer if you like, but if they will not take cash I do not buy from them. Do not carry CC's with me only cash. Plus with smartphones being the biggest contributor to the downfall of our society, I do not and will not have one of those either.

I got my first smartphone last year and I hate it. Only reason I didn’t get a flip phone is they were more expensive.

I had a smart phone for about 6 months 10 years ago. Now the damn things are huge. Do not see how they would fit in my riding boot when woods riding. The damned thing pissed me off so many times I finally took a 20 pound sledge to it and swore I would never internet on a screen smaller than 12" again. Went and got a military grade flip phone and it lasted 6 years. Next same thing and it made it 4 so far. The on board memory battery died and the company would not replace it or I would not of bought another one.The first one was like a Timex, took a licking and kept on ticking.

Looks like a meth pipe or sucker punch tool too me for how small it is. Every cell phone has a flashligh on it. Why bring in something that looks like drug paraphernalia or a sucker punch tool? Jk they do go a little overboard.

Security was looser this year than in the past the 2 times I entered the stadium, I didn't even take me keys or wallet out of my pockets and wore steel toe boots, I walked thru the metal detector, it beeped and they said "you're good".

I can't imagine how much easier it is for the stadium to be card only. There were constant lines at the food vendors and I'm sure dealing with cash would slow that down. Anyone that has had to deal with counting drawers and making sure you have change on hand can appreciate avoiding the hassle with all the registers in the place, giving the CC companies the 2% is a harder pill to swallow.

Boomer here. We went to Arlington SX. I had bought all 5 tickets. They are paperless but I could see them on my phone so I didn't sweat it. Waiting in line outside ATT stadium...the PA says, "Every person must have their own ticket. Please send each person in your group their own ticket". We had about 20 minutes before the gates opened so I started sending the tickets. Of course, the wouldn't send.

My phone wouldn't get service. The only thing I could figure was ATT stadium doesn't like T-Mobile service. Blink I was getting pretty panicked. Thankfully, the gate attendants were super cool and we had no problem. All the stadium folks were excellent...in fact, one of the food court managers carried our beers to our seats (they have a 2 beer per person rule and I had 3 for the adults).

Our seats were on the 45 yard line and the lighting was great...the huge screen was awesome. I recommend the Arlington round.

Weird, I did not see any signs like that at Arlington and did not have to send tickets to individuals

I work for a company that manages parking facilities and the majority of garages have a grace period of 15 minutes or so if you decided you want to go elsewhere.

With gas prices now I would need to carry too much cash. I don't mind a debit card for transactions over $15 but using a debit card for a $6.00 transaction pisses me off.

It wasn't posted anywhere that I saw. It was coming over the PA system outside the stadium. As I said, the gate attendants paid it no mind and just scanned all the tickets off my phone.

isn't cash "legal tender"? Not to derail this thread, but if a place of business refuses cash, they just told you "Ok, then this item is free" as they are refusing your legal payment for it. they cannot FORCE a cc transaction. That's why it's printed on money: Valid legal tender for all Debts.

EDIT - appears I'm wrong:

I tried to use a hundred dollar bill at a coffee shop, fast food place and CVS and was told they didn't have change. A burger place at lunchtime can't break a hundred? CVS? What bullshit.
I was getting pizza a couple of weeks ago and had a $50 bill to pay with. They told me they take nothing larger than a $20 bill. For some reason I didn't have my CC card with me and had to tell them it's the only way I have to pay and if you can't take it I will just have to leave the pizzas here. They suddenly found change and took the $50.
