Roczen to the GPs rumor

3/1/2022 5:20am
That would be cool for him and his family traveling the world and racing the GPs and at the same time record his GP adventures. That would be a great way to end his career. Will it happen ? I doubt it.

There's going to be some changes for Roczen next year, but I don't think racing MXGP is one of them.

Wouldn't surprise me to see him call it a career although it would be a real shame for him to not win a 450SX title.

I could see him doing it or the World SX for a year then retiring back in the US

What's he got against JT's sister?

Maybe Roczen is considering the World SX series, he has options and one of them is to retire. I'll go with the later. He has his health and has made enough money to pursue other ventures.

GPs are drastically less hot and humid overall than US Nationals. That's been at the root of Roczen's bad days outdoors.

Wouldn't bet on him vs. Herlings, but Gasjer, Seewer, etc? I'll take Ken.

Good move IMO.
You would take Roczen over Gajser? That’s bananas.

Saturday Qualifiers + 2 Motos on brutal tracks vs Supercross?
If his body is giving him grief, MXGP will do him in, imo.
You missed his wins (domination!) in Unadilla?Who knows what he will be capable of racing on tricky technical tracks in MXGP!?

Lol slap the letters “GP” on it and it becomes art now. Amazing.

I would say so.

I have a lot of respect for the US top riders, on their national tracks they are as fast as any GP rider.

But stick them on the GP tour & they will start becoming lost in the variety of terrains, longer wk ends, track conditions, weather etc

Do you remember Mitch Payten saying the fastest riders are the fastest riders, shortly before the Lommel MXON, referring to the fact that the US nationals guys will still be on top despite never competing at Lommel.

What happened ? Pro circuit national champs Blake Baggest gets lapped by Tanol Leok.

Obv it would only happen at somewhere on the GP calendar as there is a different art to GP’s.

It’s a level above any national series..

This must be a dumbgeon rumor. KR won't even race AMA outdoors, why would he kill himself for double the amount of races and miles covered? He's done after supercross unless he starts winning a lot of races this second half of SX.

It would be cool to see Roczen come clean about his medical issues (if any) ,drop the factory gig, pick up a few sponsors to help fund the tour , hire camper van for the fam and aim for a no pressure mid pack farewell tour .

I would not mind seeing Roczen riding mxgp, but yeah, naaaah. I think he’s done. Even though the guy still can post insane lap times during qualifying I sadly think his days are done.

Sadly I agree to an extent. I just think these tracks are so gnarly by the time the main event comes around and I don't think Roczen wants to risk getting hurt again by pushing the envelope. He's been one of my favorite riders since he was an amateur and he's accomplished a lot of great things in the sport, and Ken's a smart guy so he understands he wants to be there for his family when everything is said and done. Whatever he decides to do, I wish him the best. Easily one of the smoothest and most talented racers ever.

The Honda has too much steering, and it has for a long time. It is hard for a kid to hold onto for a full race let alone a vet rider. Yeah it will turn the hottest hot lap but try to race it at the end of the night in traffic when the track is trashed and you will hit the ground more than say a Kawi rider. Not only that but you spend a lot of time thinking you are going to hit the ground because the bike is so on edge. The bike steers itself a lot of the time and that can be stupid fast, but the other side of that is you are not riding the bike through the corner it is doing its own thing.

Chase and dare I say it Jett are going through this right now but they are younger and more willing to take risks so they show flashes of dominance followed by pushing the bike over the edge and ending up on the ground.

The best thing for Roczen if he wants to keep racing is to get away from Honda.

He is a year older. His tolerance for risk is reduced due to age. He also finished third last year and he faded at the end of races and towards the end of the season. It takes more concentration to ride a bike with too much steering. I think he is mentally done with that bike. There could also be changes in the bike this year that we don’t know about.

He finished 2nd last year not 3rd. Are you thinking of the 2020 season? You seem to be describing the 2020 season for Roczen and forgetting how good he was 2021.

At first you blame the bike and say he needs to get off of it but now you're saying it has to do with his age and mindset.

It was an interesting podcast mentioned in the first post.

The mxgp tracks are certainly gnarly, but they are not as deadly as a sx track and if you make a mistake you might walk away without injuries. So in that respect he might actually consider it. The top runners in mxgp are crazy fast though.

I wonder how he would have performed recent years without the gnarly injuries he’s had.

My mistake in last year standings. I thought Tomac caught him in points at the end.

The older you get the more your reflexes slow and the more risk averse you become. A bike that steers more works against that risk averse nature and as reflexes slow you lose the ability to keep the bike under you. This can make you hesitant and slow you down all over the track not just in rough or slick sections. A more stable bike won’t throw you on the ground at the slightest mistake, and you can continue to ride it more aggressively. So while you will lose time to the bike with more steering in spots on the track, the lack of crashes and comfort when pushing the bike will allow the “slower” bike with less steering to be ridden harder.

Wouldn't the gp schedule be better for him and his battered body? Sure they may race more on a weekend, the big breaks inbetween would be a huge benefit to him though.

I assume gp pays better than pro motocross? I guess if you wanted to keep racing but not supercross the most money would be mxgp? Cairoli just proved you can be pretty old in mxgp and still be competitive.

Rumors of new Suzuki 450. Needs a year development in GP's with little production based restrictions. Previous ties with Suzuki ......

Id imagine the recovery time between races is better/more appealing.

"I've always felt he's far more classy then that." Wtf does that even mean? Outdoors is wide open, brutal, and nasty. Sx is precise and elegant. Some would call it beautiful. If one takes more class, it's sx. Of course no one says one is more classier than the other because that's just weird. We get it dude, you don't like sx. Go post in your dumb thread

It's more than one race. There's plenty of evidence showing US riders, none more proving then Villo, having difficults in adopting to massive change in geography, borders, food, culture, travel, languages, schedule, racing style, track conditions, increased bike set up possibilities and getting lost .... it's a different beast that takes time. Just as it takes time for GP riders going to the USA. Any rider changing needs 2 years minimum to learn and adapt.

Cream will always rise though.
