Dennis is an old war horse. If he says he's seen some stuff...I'll take it to the bank. He's not trying to throw shade. I believe he's just saying that there could be serious lifelong consequences if injuries aren't handled correctly. I reckon most old pros have stories very similar...especially the privateers. Peace.

Surprisingly enough nobody caught the snippet where I said, "needles and all!" but that's as far as ill go there...

BTW, thanks for the nice words!
There all a bunch of swingers anyway.

I’m a neuroscientist. My professional advice to anyone who has hit their head hard, even if not knocked out, would be to take at least 4-6 weeks off and get a new helmet. Nothing is more important than your brain. If you hit your head again and damage healing tissue, the consequences are dramatic. I don’t care if you pass the concussion protocol. There should be accelerometers on helmets with guidance based on force.

Sorry, but most employers don't care about you. They might care about loosing your skills, and maybe because it can be a pain to find a replacement. There are graveyards full of indispensable men.

Supercross is a show, and the show must go on. The riders are just a part of the show, just like the guy being shot from a cannon or nearly getting eaten by lions.

And anyone think that the AMA can rule properly over something as complex as a brain injury, or drug cheating, when they can't even rule over their own rulebook I think that is being naive.
Supercross is a show. We think of it as a sport but Feld knows it is just a show, just like Monster Jam. This is one of the consequences of “growing the sport” and trying to take it mainstream. You loose control of it and the big money calls the shots. I am happy that we can watch it live on TV instead of waiting a week to read about it in Cycle News or call 1-900-moto- info or whatever it was, but this is part of making it big. I’m not sure it’s worth it but it’s too late now.

This^^^ in high school my brother was a quarterback and took a pretty good shot to the head. Pulled out for a few plays to get his legs back. No problem, following week takes another hit. Headaches immediately and the following week was pure hell. Almost a week later the principal of the school finds him sleeping on the floor in the commons area after take in and calls my mom. She gets him to the car, with him showing signs of weakness and decides to go to the ER as he is talking crap and eyes aren’t open. She pulls up to the ER and he goes into seizure and within the hour they have his skull open to relieve the brain swelling. After a couple of weeks in the hospital he was released without any issues but was advised to not, participate in contact sports for the rest of his life.

Moral of the story: two concussions a week apart, one recognizable the other not, that lead to brain surgery and left with a TBI and more than likely CTE. He’s a grump but we know why.

One of the coolest things I ever saw was in the KC area where they had a lot of top A riders from the surrounding area. You let them all go at the line and passed everyone within 3 laps or so. Those A guys you were letting go were the fastest dudes we’d ever seen at that track until you showed up. Whole different level of speed.

I wish you the very best quality of life given your situation. And thank you for being open about this and bringing it into the public eye.

Hey Regis, I think you missed a post......

I never said Doc Bodnar is taking any cash..... there sure are a lot of people in the Paddock...don't put words in my mouth. I wrote a lot there, on a cell phone so if something didn't come across that Bodnar is taking cash then I miss typed that..but again...you'd be surprised on who actually is...

Soggy! Thanks for pointing that out. I Stand Corrected and I APOLOGIZE and got a mistype during a cell phone paragraph, sorry!...

I am more referring to some other people... I do see Doc Bodnar as a 100% true professional, I still, however, see him/them passing people sooner than what is truly safe for head trauma injury, though. I will stand by that part.

Again, sorry for that mistype, I am clearly referring to others and I know a lot of people understood what I meant, but that did look bad. Sorry DOC!

It's amazing that anyone can assess a potential brain injury at the side of a track in the same time it takes a factory mechanic to chance a front brake lever.

I know everyone let Macadoo get back on the start after CAUSING a red flag. No one had time to give him even a once over to see if he was ok. Fact is he shouldn’t have been allowed to restart a race he causes a red flag in. Yet it all happened.

My point was that you can’t assess for a concussion in between the time a race is stopped and the restart on the side of the track. and They should have had plenty of time to assess since it should be a rule that you can’t be in the restart of a red flag that you cause. They had no clue if he had suffered a concussion when they let him restart.

Same thing happened to a local A rider here in WI when I was a little guy. He was out for quite a while and had to be life flighted if I remember correctly. Never rode again, but I do see him around from time to time.

Valid post. I made a big stink on here in 2011 after Stewarts Daytona crash. People said I was nuts and in the weeks later Stewart had all sorts of incidents from getting arrested and crashing into a lot of other title contenders that year. Chase needs to heal up. He’s such a calculated rider and that all comes from the brain. He’s young, no need to rush it.

A mistype because of a phone? This wasn’t a spelling error, this was an intentional statement that you are blaming the phone for. Come on with the BS.

Back to helmet safety and transparency in testing. I did notice a ton more 6D helmets yesterday…..not to assume that they are the best….just something I noticed. I guess the good news is the helmets should be a ton safer than in the past…..although we can’t see any hard evidence of this. For some reason….we don’t see test comparisons and results.

The team could’ve at least given him a new helmet if they were going to let him race

Yeah what the heck, maybe there should be a recognised helmet tester with a ranking system. It's a pretty important thing to be aware of, I'd rather knowingly buy the safest helmet instead of the most marketed/cooler looking one.

These are the same medical "experts" who let Zach Bell line up after landing a triple using his head as a front shock.

Well, if we put accelerometers on helmets and collected data about concussion symptoms post crash, we’d have real world data on what helmets work the best. It would help the athletes and the manufacturers of helmets.

Man DJ was an absolute beast to watch on an 85. At one point I noticed he had to be helped on to his bike to even race due to his leg injury. There use to be this gnarly rhythm section on the finish line straight at Elk City in the mid to late 90's. DJ was in 2nd behind Shawn Cook and blitz'd the damn thing like a whoop section on the final lap. The kid had a TON of heart.

There's another name I haven't heard in a while, besides winning a "who's that guy?" award on a reraceables podcast.

Edit: just realized I was thinking of Shawn Clark, not Cook.

to be completely transparent with you, yeah. I had to open my computer when I got home to re-read everything in a bigger format. I got lost in the sauce by only being able to see 2 inches of the screen at a time and got ahead of myself...Thinking faster than I can type on the damn thing... The OP has come out and admitted he has some serious brain injury issues due to repeated head trauma and you've come to the conclusion that it's impossible to make a comprehension error (later retracted by the OP who apologized) and you're calling BS?

That's some serious powers of deduction you have there Sherlock.

He doesn’t have to defend anything to me. Saying the phone caused him to type something and then deny that it was written is BS. I am sorry to know that concussions have messed with the guys head but throwing someone’s reputation under the bus like that is BS.

Hey Dennis. I've seen you ride back in the 85 days at Whitney, didn't know who you were until I stood next to your dad and he talked with me for the whole moto. I have nothing to add to this story other then I have never seen another dad with more concern about their son being out there, he was a nervous wreck but a really cool guy to spend a minute with. Good luck, wish you well.

On this topic of concussions, Weege did a podcast with Dr. Paul Reiman who is part of Alpinestars Medical Unit. Ep171 on RacerX podcast Network from Dec 15th 21. Good up-to-date on what they do.

Thank you for posting this Dennis. As soon as I saw Chases actions I immediately thought TBI.

I would bet a $1 he has no memory of this race or his crash.
