I was a mod at another MX/SX forum...and made a shit TON of mistakes, took everything personally, and pretty much pissed everybody off. But...I learned a lot in the process. Modding is hard, and thankless.

IMO, Vital is running better than I've ever seen it...or better than I ever saw it in the past. A lot of good people...a lot of smart & hysterical people have left, unfortunately, but I believe the modding is better than ever...and Michael is doing a pretty great job of giving people plenty of rope.

Up and Down votes...fine the way they are. I agree with some others who feel that making downvotes visible would just cause ongoing bad feelings between users.

Will say, I like the 12 days of Christmas. Was even better after winning a day last year Smile

The likes/dislikes seems childish. They don’t need to be here but since they are, downvotes should not be anonymous it just encourages troll behavior.

I still visit here more than anywhere else on the net so you’re doing something right, just wish those functions would come out of the stone age.

I'm on the fence with thumbs up and thumbs down...I personally see benefit and negatives...be curious to hear more users thoughts on it.
I personally wish you had a laughing emoji to go with the up down votes, some of the posts in here are hilarious 😆. To the people wishing you could see who downvotes, why? Do you look at who upvoted you and then thank them for the upvote and would you then go and ask wtf, why did you downvote my post if you could see who downvoted you? The thin skins on here😂😂😂😂😂

I think this is a hard question because so much of what you enjoy about a board is your experience, especially early on.

This is a great board. I do think that it is less smart and clever in a fun way, so for me it was more enjoyable in the past, but that largely is because I was closer to more of the people who were the core of the board. I'm not sure there even is a core of the board anymore, and that may not be a bad thing. I also think it is impossible now with social media to replicate the wonderful early days of moto web boards.

I do miss the handful of evil geniuses in the early days; the troublemaking these days is low level sludge.

Simply because anonymity on social media breeds chicken shit behavior. Many already hide behind their screen names, if you want to tell someone you think their post sucks sign your name to it. It’s just the principle of it. Otherwise just remove the dislike button altogether if the fear is it will cause problems because evidently to some, it already does.

I'm not an old timer....

Just some observations looking at the features of this board...it's pretty outdated.

Needs:
Multi-quote.
Private Messaging (not email based)
A real search feature.

Whatever web software ADVrider is using....that should be what this place gets modeled after.

My $20.00 worth... (adjusted for inflation)

We should be able to backdate our entry day since many of us lost quite a few years.

Not really, I don't care. Don't care about the downvotes either.

I got into the sport riding complete piles of shit.
Trust me, a downvote is not going to irritate me even slightly.

I do think about the early days, and what the new generation would think about it.

Like the old bikes, it was harsh, and you took it or quit.

On a serious note; a Trailer/Truck/Van sub-forum might not be a bad idea... That other forum has had one for many years.

Agree with that. We all know there’s a load of down votes on even the most sensible of comments and there are often comments like “how can someone possibly down vote that??”

It’s ok to tell someone their post sucks, but at least own it, don’t hide.

Inevitably there will be a handful of dickheads who take it too personally and then message the down-voter.. in which case it’d be sensible to have a member-block button.

Come to think of it a ‘member block’ option would be useful. I once went through a stage where no matter what comment I made, whatever it was regarding the same member/s would quote it, pick at it or laugh at it.
That got boring real quick.
Luckily I’m thick skinned so I stayed around, but we could have lost some quality members if the same happened to them.

On the desktop version I can find “my forum posts”

I can’t find that on the mobile version- does it exist?

Come to this forum every day for the last decade. Can already see the return of ML and now being in charge is only going to make this place better, especially with starting a topic like this to see what the public would like. Don’t use the private messaging and really don’t mind the up and/or downvotes. Usually when someone gets a ton of downvotes it’s more than deserved anyway.

Keep on keeping on!

GuyB smart ass comments were annoying
ML insider info is great when I come across them in a thread. Wish we could get a weekly insider info thread or something.
Up and down votes are great. In a long thread with a ton of pages I only read the comments with lots of up votes or down votes

Still enjoy this board, but seems we have lost many of the good old boys who kept this forum alive.
Not really bothered either way with the up or down voting, just keep the great content coming.

We haven't had a forum meltdown for a few years, was funny watching some guys spiral down into the vortex arguing black was white etc.

This place works for me. I never had a problem with Gibby that I didn't deserve. Always liked ML and have no complaints with his management.

I honestly forget the thumb thing even exists...I may have used it three times since inception.

Keep up the good work.

You nailed it with both choices. Search function is a pretty big coinflip on what you'll get presented. Specific, lengthier keywords obviously work decent, but anything less and it's a mix bag of results.

Likes/Dislikes I still think limit the conversation aspect of a forum, but I also see where it's maybe resulted in less personal attacks like there used to be. Most effective likes/dislikes I've seen are used as a self governing system. Ex. auto-hide highly downvoted comments, but allow users to read them if they wish vs. relying solely on moderators to sift through threads.

Your post and most of your posts suck. Instead of me telling you every time I can just simply click downvote. The chicken shit is the guy getting offended someone doesn’t agree with him. But hey whatever works for you brotha

ML - loving the quality content and governing approach since you've taken over. A+ work.

I agree with what others have said in that the search function and PM format could use an overhaul.

Another option that would be nice is a "Sort" function in each forum. The default could remain sorted by latest post as it is now, but also have options to sort by most commented or most viewed (per day, week, month, year, all time). That would allow users to skip some of the BS posts if they're only logging every so often. Straight to the good stuff.

Also, just a thought about the likes/dislikes since it seems to be a pretty concerning topic in this thread...

Why not follow YouTube's (newer) format, which makes likes and dislikes both anonymous, and basically combines the average of both? If there are 100 likes and 50 dislikes, it will show the post having 50 likes. It keeps things more positive looking, and if a post really warrants a negative rating, it'll show it. To me, it's less important who is upvoting/downvoting, but how the community reacts to a post, overall.

It probably doesn't help that there's 2 search functions.

Search Site and Search Forum.

Search Site is located in the top right corner of the page. Search Forum is located just under the thread title once you open a thread. It's also located just above Start New Topic where all the threads show up.

Under Search Site you can only filter the search results in 2 categories.

Under Search Forum you can filter the search results across 5 categories to narrow down your results even further.

Give both a try and you'll see that you get different results.

Fair point, Mav. I can't say I use the search a ton so this is purely from my limited scope of using it through the years.

The top right search also provides an option to select "section" which makes the Forum one a bit redundant, but the Forum one speeds up the process I guess? I wonder if expanding sort categories and options (sort by oldest/past 365 days/etc.) could be beneficial to the Site Search, and at the same time make the Forum search clippable? A meshing of the two in a way.

This is from a regular web user. I can't attest to mobile site functionality.

It’s the Walmart of motocross, one stop shop. I don’t bother going elsewhere because the youtube video links and additional links in the forums provide easy access to all relevant information instead of visiting 5 sites. I enjoy the Vlogs and like not having to chase them down on youtube channels.

I mentioned in my post doing a health and fitness page. You could also sub page it and have a race season prep page. Were like the bike build page. People can post their season prep programs, riding programs, before/afters. Lots of guys use zwift and could coordinate rides, strava details for guys that are local to each other. I could see vital zwift rides getting competitive.

I do think the truck trailer stuff is good to stay in non moto especially if you get the search functions working better.

I was "Hammertime" back in the day and from the start. I was one of Guyb's first hate cuts....prob 10 years ago. I kept reading though and saw him slide into the "dem" mentality on the regular and ruin the board.

It was fun back in the day and i miss yukking it up with old friends. I feel it lacks personality and character now. I can't really figure out what's going on...

Furthermore, on the positive...I've got cool shit from all over the world cool people from here sent me. From FTE's awesome photography to Rob Andrews famously ugly des nats "Lazer" helmet to the DV "screw hammertime" jersey and so much more. It was a blast. Meeting up with over 100 people at Dave and Busters at A1 from all over the planet....it was a cool "culture" here and Mototalk back then.

The Search Site allows you to select a section, but say you select Forum it's going to list all the results for that search term across the entire website.

The Search Forum allows you to select a specific sub-forum narrowing the results to that specific section as oppose to the entire website which speeds up the process. If you know the name of the member that posted what you're looking for, you can enter it and only posts from that member will show up in the results.

The Desktop and Mobile version do the same thing. They just have a different user interface. Categorizing the For Sale section by Bikes, Gear, Parts, WTB/ISO, etc. would help even more.

Got it, thanks for clarification. I do still wonder if aggregating that into a single search [menu] would be less confusing. I'm not going to claim to be web designer so maybe it's more logical to have it setup in the way it is now.

A lot of structural and interface issues have been covered already, so I won’t harp on those.

Stylistically there’s been some good changes. The front page of vital (vitalmx.com) and the forum sections of vital used to feel like two different vitals. I like that ML has posted a lot of the content from the landing page into the forum and then engaged with forum posters because it gives the site better cohesion. I’m more curious to check out non forum related pages than I used to be.
