Can someone, anyone make an articulate argument as to why so many claim this flake is a racing legend? Best I can tell he never won a championship and really didn't win that many races. There are plenty of guys that have won championships and have more wins that a lot here seem to think have had a substandard career. It's confusing to me to say the least.

So True, lastnight I was doing cardio on a aliptic machine 3 nights in a row 1 st time since 18. A State Farm agent says very excitedly hey Tone, I heard that you where quite the basketball star. He named a bunch of people that talked about me. I just laughed and said wow that makes feel great and said I kinda threw it away laughing . 1982,83 10 th grade was the last time I played. I had d1 offers my Mom said I could go play in Europe at 15 then she said I couldn’t. Etc. I played super hard every second like it was life or death. As a player I,m more of a legend than Bennet who made the nba and is a national champion coach, as many say. Nobody talks about him having freakish athletic ability win or die attitude. Just that his dad was a d1 coach etc he couldn’t carry a team he was just a part of a team. Ryno raced super hard with a lot of heart, hated loosing , qualities of a Legend. People talked cold about me for many yrs about throwing it all away. Championships are the guy with the most points at the end. Look at Bradshaw he was a lot faster than JMB in 91.

First, glad that Ryan is doing better, has pretty much all his physical functions, and is healing well. No one ever wants someone to suffer devastating injuries.

Ryan seems like an interesting character. He’s incredibly hyperbolic, so it’s difficult to believe everything that he says is 100% accurate. Like when he says that people told him that they’d never seen anyone in as much pain as him, how no one else understands things as well as he does, etc. When he said that he recovered from his paralysis because he’s stronger than other people, it was a little bit sickening, especially knowing a guy who is in a chair who’s exponentially stronger (still!!!) than Ryan could ever hope to be. The implication that those who can’t recover from their SCIs like he has just aren’t ‘strong’ enough is disgusting at best…..

Everything has to be grandiose, bigger and badder than anyone else has ever had or could imagine.

That makes for good entertainment for some people, but not for everyone.

Again, I’m extremely happy that Ryan won’t be living the rest of his life in a chair, and hopefully he stays healthy and gets to walk with his next generations and enjoy life fully.

How strong is Ryan and how strong does he “hope” to be?Huh As you can see, sometimes we all say crazy shit too, but we don’t have a spotlight shining on us and lots of people picking us apart.

Here's my old college roommate nearly 15 years after his SCI occurred (picture is from several years ago, he's still about the same other than a little bit older!!!).

Other than being able to use his legs now, I can't imagine any way that Ryan was/is 'stronger' than this man in any form. If 'strength' were the thing that makes you either recover from or live with an SCI, then this man would be running today.

Your views may vary, however.

Judging by the literal meaning of hyperbolic, my statement was more of an observation than an opinion or “view”. Btw your friend looks quite strong and impressive. Nice!

I’m the first to bag on Ryno’s loopy interviews.. he was a punish on pulp talking about his chickens.
This podcast however is very different and actually a decent listen. Give it a chance!

If he can regain the strength and range of motion in his shoulder arm and hand again I would hope that he could ride again albeit leaving the ego of the legend in the van. Tone it down, bike and aggression, and ride for the pure joy of it and not for “the people are watching”. As us all you can tell that riding is part of who he is and not doing it has the tendency to be more painful than not…

He's definitely an odd character, and maybe an example why taking mushrooms in your 40's isn't the best idea, but I'd say he's a legend in motocross.

He is still being talked about. How many guys have beat him in his career that no one even remembers? To me he is that lasting example of old school moto tough. Gutting it out no matter what to finish a race.

I remember when I was a little kid seeing him at the old Competition Park I believe (I could have the name wrong, I was still on a 65). He was testing the not yet out CR450f. On one of the berms on the front of the track he was throwing so much roost that people had to move their trucks. That's something that always sticks with you.

I would love to have JT$ discussing square circles with Ryno, just once... please...
Have these two discuss the meaninglessness of moto across the universe, and vice-versa
Have Steve Matthes life-swap with Keefer, and JT$ life-swap with Ryno... Just for one day!

You never saw Hughes ride the KTM 125 in the nationals early 00’s nationals, obviously not?
Just some of the most intense, competitive, 125 racing in the history of the series.
Riding, through injuries, broken leg, and constant bike problems. You’ll never see another racer go that hard, be that tough, and That far committed to win a title, as Ryno that year. He had Langston handled all series, Hughes missed 1 race(broken leg). That was the only reason He was behind Langston, then Last race Troy got cancelled, shitty ending to one of the finest 125 championships I ever saw. Ryno and Brown rivalry was brutal out on the track.

This and many countless career highlights this “flake “ accomplished probably means shit to a fucking hero like you though.
Factories and top level pros paid this ‘flake’ for decades to ride and develop bikes, parts, programs etc. I’m sure you have him covered.

Came back and was strong... after long term gnarly back/neck fractures/ injuries while developing /racing the new Crf 450 at Delmont !!! He has plowed through more serious injuries than anyone I know of, and to keep battling back to ride at the highest levels throughout his career . Moving to GPS to rebuild career, come back rise to top again, get factory rides. Always being highly competitive, winning races, riding at highest level, his toughness And heart, we’ll never see again, that ship long sailed in today’s moto!

I’m no Ryno apologists, he is who he is,Surely he can be an ass at times, He does and says, some crazy shit, I don’t care what anyone says or does, especially online!

But you shortsighted dickheads, holy fuck, you can’t bring yourselfs to distinguish or acknowledge his career on the track, To his post career
,and his endeavors and crazy shit after he retired?

So you attack his career and talk out your asses, because you don’t like hIm now ,he upsets you.

If you had been in the sport watched the intensity that Ryno and Brown each had, trying break the other’s legs every fucking moto for an entire outdoor series for the title, you may just realize how ignorant some of you are, but probably not.

His career was never substandard

Oi, ya pelican.

I don’t reckon anyone in this thread was shitting on his career.

Most were pointing out, and quite fucking rightly, that Hughes is a deadset loose cannon these days.

Most sensible fuckers can distinguish between sporting abilities and personalities.

Can you?

To win or loose an important race or series does not make you a legend. Fighting for the win, giving all you have, succeed from time to time makes you a noted and well wished competitor and idol for the youth. Talking shit over your competition, giving idiotic interviews takes all your accomplished glory away very soon and leaves you just as an idiot in the limelight. Someone will turn off the last spotlight after a while and nobody wants another interview - then the last episode of a maybe once good show is over.
Not trying to break the leg of your fiercest competitor but beating him fair and square on the track, no need to badmouth him or anyone else, having respect for all the people around you and giving your best makes you a legend. How come we never have discussions like this over De Coster, Magoo, Lackey and all the other true legends that never babbled idiotic shit and left a lifelong impression on many of us?

California is not going to like seeing all that work that he has done on his land. They don't take kindly to moving dirt, building things, collecting rain, or doing anything really without getting their permission first and putting up a lot of dough.
