Thoroughly enjoyed watching the Superpole on the Paris livestream. One rider at a time on the track going flat out for one lap during the main program.
When Carioli had the fastest time for a while, I think it had some of the Americans scratching their heads and provided a lot of excitement... which SX specialist would top the MX legend?
Not only that, it provides a great platform to allow each rider's riding style, line selection, personality and, of course, sponsors to be showcased for a solid minute with all eyes in the stands, or in front of their TVs, on them.
I don't know if we need it at every single round, but I think 1-5 Superpoles during the season could add a very entertaining element to the series.

To some extent, we already do this with timed qualifying, so what's the point?
I like it, but I'm not sure how it fits in.

I think the same qualifying system could remain, but yeah, perhaps an extra point is awarded? Maybe, say for the top 10 in points, they do it in place of having to race the heats. So for say three rounds, they are basically guaranteed a spot in the main event, but the Superpole determines their gate pick...
Timed qualifying with everyone on the track is already a crapshoot, as slower riders sometimes get in the way of a good lap.
Have the superpole after the mid day qualifiers for the 450's. Only the top ten 450 riders get a shot at the superpole, the top ten will be set by the standard qualifying sessions. The rider who wins the superpole gets first gate pick and a bonus championship point. The rest of the top ten gate picks will be a luck of the draw.
The broadcast can show the superpole laps, and it will be under 15 minutes if showtime...they put 45 minutes of fluff in each round anyway.
I don't really think it fits into the usual schedule though.
- Top 10 450 riders that transferred from the heats get to participate
- 1-3 championship points are on the line, something in that range
- Run it right after the LCQs, before the 250 main. Ideally the track will be in good condition after being prepped, and nobody will be getting an advantage since the track will change during the 250 main anyways.
w whole stadium packed with all eyes on 1 rider throw down there fastest lap is an epic idea.
Maybe for the championship and live tv program it would be a little too much time consuming.
But to watch it live is awesome.
Jason Anderson in 2019 when he raced here for the Aus SX open, him in super pole was truly one of the most epic laps i've seen. the sprint lap of him hanging off the back and throwing it down everywhere was so cool to see
Pit Row
Top 10 decides the gate pick plus 3 points for 1st, 2 for 2nd 1 for 3rd
id like something like knockout qualifying racing where each back rider is instead sent home and top runners have to keep racing to stay in.
doing a head to head race or super poles would be fun but with two classes i dont know if a night show would have the time unless they run in it the day and just air the top runs before racing starts as part of the program
A superpole thing would be cool if the gate was off set like they do the red flag restarts. i like watching watching the red flag restarts as its generally safe and the slowest guys dont get in the way
The TV crew could even go the extra small baby steps and save the super pole footage for the long boring periods between the races. Maybe between the 250 and 450 heats?
At the end of the day would it be extra entertainment for the fans and it would still provide individual rider/sponsorship time. It would just be something different. More racing, less talking and other boring people/side shows/useless features.
No need to show it up front and try to fit it in when there is already plenty of down time they need to fill...
Shouldn't be that hard to figure out in 2022...
If not the top 10 then at least the top 5 from quali to get a chance of pole. It wouldn't work to have it replace timed quali entirely as it's easy to slip off on such an intense 1 lap, so not fair to pin it all down to that.
I was in Paris on saturday and the tension and atmosphere for the entire Superpole was incredible.
