Shimoda is going to race in the 450 class at Rd 7 of the Japan Nationals at Sugo on Oct 23-24. It will be interesting to see how he stacks up against the top regulars in that series.

We should be able to watch the live stream on the MFJ Live channel here:

Shimoda is smooth & solid. He will do fine on the 450, I reckon.

I can only assume he will wipe the field? Has any other rider done this in the recent past? I don't feel I ever heard of a rider going to do a Japanese National other than Jo.

Gajser, Webb and Martin have gone in recent years.

Yep, and Seely, and Canard, and a few others I am probably forgetting.

There are some strong guys in the 450 class in Japan. And it is their series and their home track. I wouldn't assume a walk in the park for Jo.

Didn’t Febvre and Canard face off there as well in 2015?

He's in another league by now.
I'd really be surprised if he didn't smoke them.

I'd expect that if he gets a good start he will win, but if not, I think the 450 and not being used to that series could work against him. I know it's his home country, but he's been in the US for quite a while now, and those guys aren't slouches on their home tracks.

Happy to see that Kawasaki is using their Japanese rider more and more for promotion. Never understood why it took so long before Honda, or in the matter of fact any Japanese brand, picked him up... He's easy to like, speaks fluent English, knows his way around social media, ... Don't think that they ever had someone who came close to him.

This is a good question. Will the competition be on works bikes and if so will Jo?

Agreed! If he keeps on this trajectory that he is on (barely a top 10 guy to a supercross winner) I can honestly see him turning into a super star. You said it best, he has it all, and is very likeable. Wish him all the best going forward.

Makes me wonder what’s his level of celebrity there, is he gonna have to carry a big stick? Ya know, for the ladies.

I said this 3 years ago the fact that the jap oem's didn't jump on him was crazy. He could have a great 2nd part to his career in the jap nationals.

I’m surprised that he is going! He really wants to go and Kawasaki Japan too but Kawasaki USA, Mitch and Monster weren’t too much into it…
He usually loves to go to Japan for a few weeks during the off season. Glad he is going!
Jo rides 450 sometimes in practice and he rides it really good. He should be on a 450 here in 2024, that’s the plan.
He is smooth, has really good throttle and good corner speed so I’m sure it will be fine for the Japanese track. He should do better than Yamamoto, Tomita, Narita,… even though it’s their track.

WWII is over, the people of Japan are Japanese, not ‘japs’.

Jo to team Kawasaki 2024 when Anderson retires.
All of the speculation in the Silly Season thread was that Anderson was place holding that spot for Forkner, but if Jo keeps riding the way he has (and Forkner keeps riding the way he has), seems he would be the easy choice for that ride.

Kyle Lewis won 3 Japanese national championships back in the day I believe.

Evans went in 2019 and won a moto by over 40 seconds. Wouldn't put Jo on the same level as Evans but he's still gonna dust them.

Ahhhh Bummer! Any event like this is on shaky ground in Japan. They keep doing these rolling "state of emergency" declarations with no real predictability it seems.

Edit: I watched the vid. Race is not canceled. Just Jo is not going. Doesn't fit his schedule with having to get ready for 2022.

So Kawasaki USA, Mitch and Monster said no for him to go. They didn’t like the idea of him to go!
The team wants him to ride Supercross this coming week already… Mitch should let him rest until the very end of September, he was the one carrying the team most of the year.
