He would’ve done the same thing if the guy was right there, it’s what they ALL do.
That’s a long ride, with some big climbs, impressive.
BMX armchair expert checking in.
Connor's mum (?) Posted this yesterday
Seems he will recover just fine in the longer term. Very gnarly and scary hit, that's for sure.
There seems to be a lot of resent towards Mahieu and the first corner move. From an MX context I totally understand everyone's position against that move, however BMX bike's are a lot more nimble, and at this level especially it is not just accepted, but expected by all competitors that you cover your line/shut the competition down (obviously not to the point of crashing/injuring someone, but to force them to check up). These guys have 40 seconds to make it happen against the best racers in the world. Hesitate for a millisecond and you're gone, its that cutthroat. If Frenchy doesnt sweep in, he literally gets pushed to the back, and does not make the main. Whilst aggressive, these moves happen all the time, sometimes more harsh than others and obviously rarely, if ever, does someone go down in the way Connor did. Frenchy isn't dirty, its just hard racing at the absolute pinnacle of the sport.

More information regarding Fields' crash in the Olympic BMX Racing semifinals
During the Olympic BMX Racing semifinals, Connor Fields crashed in the first turn. He was transported by backboard out of the venue and transferred to the preferred hospital in Tokyo, St. Luke’s International Hospital. He has been accompanied by the Chief Medical Officer of the U.S. Olympic Team along with the USA Cycling Medical team and coaches. The staff has been in contact with his immediate family as they have navigated his care options after evaluation.
The doctors reported that Fields sustained a brain hemorrhage at the venue. After a night in the ICU, the doctors are pleased to report that there has been no additional bleeding, and no new injuries were found. Fields has been moved out of the critical care unit and will remain in the hospital until cleared.

Brain bleeds are no joke. GWS brother!
I think the "Blame Pie" is about 50/50 at this point.
Heal up soon, Connor.
Pit Row
I’m not really sure what your helmet solution is. Bobble head bmx would be funny, they could all wear streetbike helmets.
That first turn is closer to 65 km/hr. These guys are hitting over 200rpm and BMX is a CONTACT sport.
Unfortunately in this sport shit happens, met too many people who have had life altering injuries but we keep coming back. There is no blame in this accident, two of the best in the world fighting for the biggest prize in the sport.
Neither of the current world champions qualified for the final in Tokyo. I can't remember a time in BMX where it was more competitve.
World champs are coming up soon, will be interesting to see who takes a break and who wants a bit of redemption.
I’m sure he would even laugh at that. Some people around here are so serious and too easily offended 👍
Terrible to see and wish him nothing but the best.
That was a serious hit with a sudden stop. Remember, brain injuries are caused by the brain suddenly banging against the inside of the skull- the helmet only helps slow down the sudden impact.
