I'll probably get slammed and downvoted to Kingdom come but I'm from the old school and always wear gear for the CRASH.

Never understood why they got away from wearing these. A thin jersey or under jersey ROOST protecter doesn't do much IMO.

Yea for a Pro maybe you don't feel as limber (didn't seem to bother RJ, Stanton, Chicken etc). But how limber are you in a hospital bed, cast or sling? Dry

Broke my collarbone wearing the exact chest pro. Plastic absorbs virtually no impact I don’t think it would of helped to be honest
Broke my collarbone wearing a JT V2000 at Loretta's. First lap, first moto, made for a shitty week......

Chest protectors are for roost and that's pretty much it. The ones with actual impact protection look like bullet proof vests.

he has some muscle mass and i think that actually saved him in that crash.
If only we still had Ralph, we could get the scoop on how Sexton's new man body saved him in that crash.

I believe a Similar chest shoulder protector discolated my shoulder.
Fell with a lateral arm movement squashed the shoulder cup against my neck resulting in discolation & a very sore neck

I'm no doctor but I pretend to be one 24/7. The way he hit, if there was going to be a shoulder injury it would likely be a dislocation or a fracture to the scapula. AC separations usually have more downward force associated, like driving the shoulder in from the top/front. Even without a fracture or dislocation/separation, the infraspinatus muscle (one of the 4 rotators) runs across the scapula and could be pretty bruised up. That kind of trauma can be pretty limiting for 10-14 days.

Hope Chase can get back on the gate for Saturday!
Honestly it could be the scapula. I broke mine 8 weeks ago and it just felt like muscle bruising. Four days later I caved and had an xray taken. I had two fractures in my scapula. I still had mobility, just absolutely no strength or anything. Even if it isnt broken, its likely he will do awful. If hes not aiming for the chip, id just sit the weekend out and chill out.

I am sure if it was broken we would know by now. As much pain as he was in I doubt it was just bruised. Like other have mentioned and I suspected we are likely to find a rotator injury that they are not willing to disclose and that seems fairly typical for factory riders.

That's not true at all. There are many different types of chest protectors of all different protection levels, many of which are far more protecting than just roost protection. Yes, there are some that's all they are about good for - roost. But I've crashed many times with and without chest protectors. The only time I broke ribs was when I didn't have a chest protector. Could be coincidence, but I don't think so. Seat belts don't 100% guarantee you won't die in a car crash but common sense tells you (and so do crash studies) they improve your chances of survival.

I remember being young (and dumb) and wore what I thought looked cool versus what protected my body. Now, I wear what protects my body.

Its a free society, so wear (or don't wear) whatever you want. I don't care. Just don't whine when you're sidelined with injuries should you choose not to wear protection.

I am sure the first thing they did at the track was an x-ray. Typically you let the injury calm down before an MRI. Limited range of movement is a good indication it is needed if the x-ray is negative. I am hoping for the best but fear the worst. Given his demeanor after the crash if he had a fracture I would be less likely to suspect a rotator tear.

At this point I just hope he doesn't have a surgical rotator cuff situation. The way he hit on his upper back, it kind of looked a bit like Tomac at Thunder Valley 2015. Maybe not quite as violent as Eli, but still a hard hit. Rotator cuff injuries suck.

Man, it sucks to lose a rider who was leading this class of studs. There is no question Chase has what it takes to win, IMO.

Only once I ride without chest protector, crashed hard, no breath, no people around, tough time.. Since this never riding without that. So dont say, its for roost only.

Handlebar to the gut or chest is a real bitch without a chest protector. Very important piece of equipment. It could be that Chase's chest protector kept him from getting more injured than he already is.

It’s ok, I broke my back with a chest protector on. A hard hit is a hard hit. Sometimes your fortunate, other times not so much

Honestly I wish they would just do away with the sand sections. Doesn't add much to the excitement of the race in my view, and it's like planting land mines in the track. Need to be reducing injuries where possible, not making them even more likely. I would say make it more like the composition of an outdoor track. If it's going to be sand, make it all sand. At least not an abrupt transition like that.

There was a safety net on the shoulder to dampen the shocks, like a few inches under the plastic.
Pretty well thought for the time...

So world class Pros can’t handle a little section of sand? Didn’t add drama to the race?

Man you must have been watching different race than what I was watching!

The part I'm interested in is the dirt underneath the sand. Sure the sand was deep, but under the sand I assume there's a decent amount of dirt too. Point being, you can't see those dirt ruts under the sand. Obviously sketchy.
