Savatgy on Pulp

First of all, Kudos to Savatgy for going on the show!

It’s a rough listen, I have never really liked the way he comes across in interviews and have wondered if it’s one of the reason he has struggled with his rides. The interview he takes a couple little jabs at Steve and kinda comes across like “the whole world is against me”

That being said, he acknowledges that it’s a weak point and it’s something he is trying to improve, so that shows a real maturity. While I didn’t overly enjoy listening to him, I do respect that he is doing it and working on his weaknesses.

Can’t wait for SX to start!

Yeah maybe it's just his sense of humor or personality, but he does not come across good. Was hoping Steve or one of the guest would ask about the Monster Cup move...

Props to him for acknowledging a problem with himself. Especially on a show like that with a huge audience. He’s definitely coming around I think. Wish him nothing but the best this season, I think he landed in a good spot.

The start of interview he was good but said a few things that kinda rubbed me the wrong way in mid-end. I try to like him but he does just kind of come across as a dick alot of the time

I agree with a lot of what’s being said here. I have the upmost respect for Joey and his accomplishments but I feel that unless you’re a Eli, rockzen, bubba, etc. you need to have a serious off the track presence.

Example, troll train. He gives me a reason during the week with his videos to take a vested interest and root for him on the track. Either way he’s giving us a birds eye view into the lifestyle. Until his videos I wasn’t a diehard fan. Now I feel like a part of his circle. (Not really but my point being).... it’s cool

Jason,Delano, Mumfords new videos. The 722. Mookie. Craig

That’s probably my unpopular opinion but in such stacked fields every rider needs something extra to sway a fan.

Fuck you guys are harsh. I thought he seemed honest and open, didn't dodge anything and came across well. The jabs he took at Steve were no different to the thousands of other jabs people take on that show that makes it such a good vibe. It's like you are searching for something to dislike about the guy.

I think one of the biggest challenges for athletes, at least in this sport, is to separate a critique of their performance at a given race from an attack on their person. Those are different things. I'm glad Joey came back on and I do think he can get better at interviews if he just shifts his perspective a little.

I think when these guys are living in the bubble of pro racing and all the training and testing, when they are fully invested like that, it just doesn't occur to them that a 3rd place podium is still far beyond most fan's wildest dreams. So you have to be able to take a breath and have that perspective when you talk about it after the race. Then go back to work mad as hell Monday morning if that's what you need to do to get motivated.

The interview was the best I have heard from Joey, but I feel like fans and his presence/attitude are an inconvenience to him and thats why he comes off like a dick. He just isn't made to be a public individual IMO.

He definitely had some rough luck this year, heel injuries are no joke. I thought he did really good his first year on the 450 Kawi. He’s on a good team for 21 hope he does well

Maybe I should go back and listen to last week because right now Steve is asking a couple industry dudes what their favorite movies are. Grinning

When Joey first turned pro and was riding with Orange Brigade and Rockstar KTM, he was pretty laid back and kind of funny. If you go back to May or June 2014, he came on the Pulp show in place of Jason Anderson (who had laryngitis I think) and he was pretty frickin' hilarious. Once he signed with PC Kawi, he started training at the Goat Farm and I honestly believe that is where he started to lose his ability to connect with fans and the media. Go back to his early podiums and wins, 2015/16....he was never happy. I'm not blaming Jeannie or the process because she also made him a much better racer. But that's where it all started IMO.

FWIW I usually cheer for him to do well.

He has the most upside of all of these 450 riders who are moving around.

Sounds like his heel injury is still lingering a bit, hopefully that comes around and he gets a chance to ride to his full potential this season. I'd rather a rider be real in his interviews than someone fake who talks about how everything is super dialed, until it's not... Joey seems real, if not the happiest guy at all times.

He wasn't at his most impressive this past season, Anstie got a few top fives on the Suzuki, Savatgy maybe a seventh or eighth? Honestly more curious about what is happening to the guy he replaced at Rocky Mountain, the one who has won 450 supercrosses and nationals.

Probably unpopular opinion but I didn't like that during the interview he was watching another game and commenting on it. When I talk to a friend on the phone I try to go to get away from that sort of background noise/distraction, now imagine if I was doing an interview for Steve and his obviously significant following (doesn't paint a huge picture of professionalism and focus on the interview). Otherwise the interview was pretty candid and I liked that he acknowledged his weaknesses in terms of fan engagement and media interaction. He is obviously very talented and has huge upside, hope he does well this season.

I thought it was good honestly. It’s not supposed to be a formal interview by any means it’s a talk radio show with a bunch of bros that talk shit & say stuff they can’t normally say that’s why I love it!
12/15/2020 7:17am
I thought the interview was going alright until Steve asked a question and he responded "You sure ask a lot of questions, Steve" (or something similar). I instantly thought "what the fuck do you expect? You're being INTERVIEWED".

Great rider, shitty attitude. Not a fan.

Not a fan of the way he comes across. Pretty apparent to me why he struggles to land a ride.

I think what was missing was respect for Steve. Those two don't get along well enough for Joey to probably fully be himself. It was nice hearing from Joey, because he is the prime example of a rider who only does media when he's performing well, but that was a strained interview. If Joey had had that same discussion and been asked those same questions from like Mitch or Ricky, I'd imagine that interview would have been fantastic. He is just now beginning to like Steve. Hopefully he gets back on Pulp a few more times and we get to keep hearing from him. Hearing a rider have a full conversation with someone for 15 or 30 minutes is completely different than reading a RacerX post race quickie. Also I think if Keefer or Watson had been co-hosting that one they probably could have got Joey even more off the defense.

So did he come across like "the whole world is against me" or did he acknowledge his weak points and admit that it's on him and he needs to improve?

I thought his jabs at Steve were great and funny. He called Steve out to his "face" and they talked about it. Steve was totally cool with it. The interview was open and honest. That's what we always say we want.

Yeah I’ll say I didn’t mind him giving Steve any shit, that was totally fine. But the commenting on a football game during the interview kinda had everyone (including Steve) thinking...cmon dude? Blush

I agree, I thought it was a good interview and good content, but to be watching a game while giving the interview lost a few points for me. And I’m a Joey fan. I thought more people would have picked up on that but maybe it was just us!

To me it sounded like he did both, he knows he needs to make himself more available to the media and present himself well.
In the interview he still came across like the world was against him and complains a little, but a lot less than usual. It’s a step in the right direction for him.
