Honda and Yamaha (well, Yamaha Motors Europe) have full-size electric motocross bikes in the works. Honda has had theirs in the works for what seems like a decade, but Yamaha's was just started this year.

Honda has a bike. Its no Alta. Who ever takes off where Alta left off will be ahead of the game. The Alta was capable of a SX TITLE.

I'm pretty shocked nobody has stepped up yet. Especially KTM. Perfect opportunity for GasGas to get ahead right off the bat. KTM has the tech already. Maybe the minibikes are just testing the water. I have zero doubt they would sell every proper E-MX bike they can make. I'd love to add one to the stable!

Why the down votes. I wish we could see the down votes.

I think when the next E-bike comes out people will truly start to appreciate just how far ahead of the game Alta was and what value they brought.

At the moment, the Sur Ron Storm Bee is (or soon will be) the closest thing to an Alta replacement. Unfortunately it's still a far cry from the Alta's capabilities.

Until the major OEMs step up, Chinese manufacturers like Sur Ron will own the e-market but their equipment at the moment seems barely robust enough for MX. Time will tell though.

There is also the Swedish Cake OR Race. It's not intended as a replacement for Alta / 250F bike, but some hybrid between MTB and current ICE bikes.

It's just a matter of time. When the kids on the KTM/Husqvarna E-50s move up to 65s or 85s, what are they going to ride? Somebody should build a 65 e-quivalent (see what I did there?) and an 85 e-quivalent bike.
If some kid wins a major supermini race on a big wheel e-bike, it will be on!

No idea why the big four/five haven't put out an electric bike yet.... Tesla cars have been out forever... the Alta has been out forever... electric powered cars/trucks/bikes have been around for more than a hundred years... yet the big four/five only drag their feet.....

Is the alta patented?

I am VERY sceptical that the Altas battery would last an entire main event.

Probably being held back by price right now. They’ve done the math and can’t see a 30% more expensive electric mx bike making as much profit as their current lineup

They also need to be able to ship a large volume to make it viable.

The time is not right, just yet.

Came here to say this. That is a passion project, not a reproducible bike.

Similar to how slapping a 125 motor into a 450 chassis isn’t the best option, Honda wouldn’t just slap an electric motor into an existing chassis and call it good. Such different power delivery and weight, they wouldn’t do that. So a production model E-Bike right around the corner is a pipe dream from Honda.

Not looking forward to all of those loud ass generators recharging their silent motorcycles in the pits. Hopefully the manufacturers are thinking about this as well. The Alta guys that I ride with have to charge between each moto. Removable back up batteries would have to be a must.

It’s all about the market. If the companies think they can profit from making an E bike then they will make them. If not, then they won’t. It’s really that simple. We’re all very aware that the technology is there.

How soon we all forget what happened to Alta.

It podiumed a Pro Endurocross main event that was all of about 40 seconds shorter than an SX 250 main.

That is the standard they were being built around. They were pretty close to that if not already there on their latest versions IIRC.

I know from a friend that they are building a few electric prototype bikes at Suzuki headquarters in Japan and an MX Bike is one of them. His guess was that Suzuki probably won't come back till MX comes with a full E-MX series or till economic turns big time and bikes will selling like hot cakes like back in 1990-2005.

My bet is that it will be Yamaha, they are generally ahead of the curve. They currently sell a line of e bikes, and of course golf carts. Plus they are close partners w Toyota and have some very cool looking electric crate motors. Electric dirt bikes will lose money for years, if not decades, so it has to be part of a broader strategic plan and Yamaha/Toyota has the deep pockets to pull it off.

Seeing as how China is building coal power plants at the fastest pace in history, I don’t think the green new deal has any chance of becoming a reality anytime soon. Go look at the air quality in Shanghi, then bitch about gas powered dirt bikes with a straight face.

Already in the works.

Plus there’s a “old “ manufacture that has a E-MXer in development.
Would have him released already if it was not for Covid.
Was told it had the power of a Alta MXR and handling characteristics of a KTM 450

Out of the big manufacturers, my bet is KTM will be the first to produce a full sized electric motocross bike. That said, I don't think it will be close in performance to the Alta MXR. Alta engineered a machine that was truly ahead of the times.

I'm just lucky to own two of them. They are fricken awesome.
