I'm done with mx, broken back

Edited Date/Time 1/26/2012 8:42pm
This sucks!!!!! All I can do is ride a pit bike for the rest of my life. for those who have broken your back (I Broke the T8 and T11) can you please tell me what you did to pass the time. My spinal cord is fine (thanks to my EVS neck brace!!) I just am so bored!!! After 5 days in the hospital I am happy to be home but man this sucks. No Sitting, bed rest only. Well I think I bitched enough. Well time to get shot in my stomach (yeah.,...........not)

You're only done with MX for about a month or 2. After that, you'll start planning on how to get back out there. Trust me, been there done that.

No shit, most of us have spent plenty of time in the hospital and at home in bed thanks to MX but most of us are still racing! Until we wreck ourselves so bad that we cannot ride at all, its balls to the walls over and over and over.. You'll be back my friend! Maybe on trails or maybe to help a younger rider but, well you know.. Just hang in thereSmile

Sorry to hear that. I did same thing at the end of 07'. I was sure I would never be able to handle riding again. Spent 08' in ridiculous pain. I fractured my L3 horizontally all the way across and a large piece of bone broke off and lodged in my nerve. I also burst two discs and bulged two. Had surgery to remove bone frag and cut out bulges. Week in hospital and PT and a year later and I am back . I really thought I would be done for good after being at the track every week for 25 years. I had a nagging back issue before this for many years that would put me out for a few days every couple of months and I would always be hunched over at the end of every ride day looking like an old man. lol The surgery for my recent accident actually fixed that old injury as well and now no pain and that old injury seems totally gone and I stand straight up now after rides. Heal fast and take it easy. Listen to your body and you will be good to go before long.

in may 08 i broke my L1, L2, L3 and also shattered my coccyx, my spinal cord swelled up and i lost a bit of feeling in my legs but luckily thanks to all sorts of stuff shoved up my ass the swelling soon went down and i now have full feeling back. I was in hospital for 3 weeks and during that time i had to lay flat and wasn't even allowed a pillow. When i got to go home i was on bed rrest for about 2 months and as soon as i got back walking my L1 and L3 collapsed completely so i had to go and have an operation to pump them up with cement ( the operation is known as kyphoplasty ). Anyways last week i went riding for the first time and other than a few aches from my muscles working i was completely fine. Pass the time by reading lots of medical books and yoga books to get your back really strong when you can move again. Hope it all goes well and keep us posted on how your feeling mate.

I have a few suggestions that seem to pass the time for me
1. Halo 3 on XBOX360. It's kinda hard to learn, but once you do, it is super fun to play online against other people. The Mx vs Atv game is pretty fun too. Plus XBOX360 has Nteflix built in, so you can order all kinds of sweet movies.

2. Poker. Theres nothing like the feeling of taking down a huge pot...I'd read as many poker books as you can on Texas hold 'em. Fulltiltpoker.com is a good site (you can play with fake money)

Yes PS3 and www.Pokerstars.com helped a lot. You can play for free and just for signing up you get one chance to play in a money game. My wife and I both placed in the money off that first entry and have done well with it. So many ways to play. They send more people to the WPT than any other online site. Turned 50 cents into 1750 recently pretty quick. Entered 5o cent tourney and won 3.50 (finished like 100th) and then entered 3.30 tourney and won 5.50 entered 5.50 tourney and won 1750 for second. It was a fun couple hours. If you are into that sort of thing.

I fractured my T-11 & T-12 in January of '08 and was back to riding about 6 months later. Do what the doc tells you to, and rehab the surrounding muscles and you should be able to ride again!! Good luck, injuries suck!

It was back in 1981 but T4 & T5 compression fractures here.....plus they told I had done it before. Spent a week in the hospital while they made the back brace and 6 months in the brace......dont tell the Dr but the last 2 months I was riding in the brace.

T5 and T6 in 2002. They were not very severe compression fractures but still a broken back. I was back on the bike in about 10 to 12 weeks.

L3 and femur 11 months ago, two surgeries later, rode for the first time last weekend and about to head out tonight for my 3rd time in the past 7 days.

I spent tons of time on 360 and ps3, CoD4, halo 3, Mx vs ATV, etc.

My dad broke his back twice, femur, hip, tons more. Eventually quit riding but not due to injury. ($$).

You aren't done until you decide to be, and you don't quit riding because you get old. You get old because you quit riding.

LOL, I broke T11 and T12 back in '97.

First few days - I am never riding again

second week - Well, I probably will trail ride, just a little.

Third week - maybe eventually I will race, but mainly just hit practice tracks

Sixth week - On my buddy's brand new aluminum framed '97 CR 250 riding with no helmet in my work clothes on the way home to check it out

Eighth week - borrowed my buddy's now parked CR 500 to ride at LACR, had a blast! My Dad had drove down to my house and nabbed my YZ 250 to clean it up for me when I first got hurt. He knew better!

June 98 - Racing at mammoth as I am just getting back to racing full time just like before, what broken back?!?

Just wait dude, almost everyone comes back to MX.

Yeah I had my worst crash a little over a year ago with a dislocated hip, fractured pelvis, 5 broken ribs and a severe concussion. Was in a induced coma for a day. I said I was done riding for good and I am now getting back on the bike. Its in our blood, We cant stop!

Please don't make ridge pull out his injury pics. You don't want to see them.

I was in a similar situation, I fractured my C6 and ruptured the disks above and below it. The day after I did it I was laying in bed in intensive care already planning riding for the next year. I haven't raced since then, but I've managed almost 10 years of play riding that I was told I couldn't do anymore. I just dialed things back alittle and its enough to get my fix. If you think you won't ride again you are probably wrong, because then you will have to separate yourself from your friends and sell everything that reminds you of riding if you truly love riding. When I had my surgery to fuse the C5,6 &7 fused togeather I watched MX video's in my hospital room everyday after I felt up to watching TV and the nurse's thought I was nuts, go figure. lol
