2020 CRF450 WE (Gas in Oil)

Just made my second oil change. Noticed a large smell of gas while draining. Don’t recall this in the first oil change. Anybody else having this issue. Have less than 10hrs on bike at least.

Running 10w40. Should I change up the oil?

Yea change oil but make sure injectors arent leaking

Stay with 10w40? Owners manual states 10w30 or 10w40. Wasn’t sure if this has anything to do with it.

For a piece of mind or not you could always send in an oil sample and get it analyzed.

My 2009 CRF 450 had this issue throughout the whole 65 or so hours I owned it.

I wouldnt run an engine too hard if I suspected there was gas in the oil. It will flash off when it gets hot, but with a gas$oil mix you might do some damage. carb engines are ez to troubleshoot that, never messed with fuel injected engines with that symptom.

I noticed it once changing oil in my 17. It was within the first 3hrs on the bike. Put some more time on it and get the motor broke in and I bet it goes away.

My bike did that as well. I was worried about it diluting the oil so I ended up dropping the oil after every ride to play it safe.

It's tied to a leaky injector issue that continues to put fuel into the motor after its been shut off. It then gets past the rings and into the crankcase. A new injector MAY fix the issue or you may just get another leaky one.

This has happened on both my 2012 CRF250 and my 2011 CRF450. Never could pin point a cause, but with regular oil changes - never caused any issues. Just did top end on the 450 (at 61 hours) and everything looked surprisingly new for having that many hours.....

Crazy, this happened way back on my 2007 CRF450 supermoto race bike. I changed the oil every race, it always had fuel in it yet nothing ever went wrong with the motor.

Wow, I’ve had a 2005, 2011, 2015 and now a 2017 CRF450 and have never noticed this and didn’t know it was a well known issue. I change my oil every 4-6 hours and haven’t had any motor problems with any of those bikes but I’ll definitely keep an eye out.

Hondas the only one who can get away with issues like this and people still rave about the quality.

I've never had the issue, but when I bought my KTM they recommended disconnecting the battery if it would be sitting for a while as it can apparently slowly discharge and cause the fuel pump to flood the bike to the point it gets into the crankcase.

Put fully synthetic in her this time around. After idle pulled the dip stick, a lot less “gas odor”. Not sure if this does the trick, or possibly just not broke in real well. Spit balling at the moment. I’m not a blazer on the track by any means. Will give it a couple more rides then check again.

Have it leave for work travel, will drop it off at dealers ship to get the full grease down, service look over. Will let you guys know what comes out of it if anything at all.

Same. Have owned 05, 06, 08 carbed & 09, 10, 18, 20 efi models with no issues.

Same, never had an issue with this before, never knew it was a problem on some bikes

My 2013 had this issue for a long time. I spent LOTS of time trying to get it resolved/fixed with no success. Mine would actually fill up the crankcase to the very top with gasoline. I checked and changed everything as appropriate to no avail. I had Robert Reynard mess with it for weeks and he was stumped. I can't remember all we changed as we worked on it for a very long time and finally gave up and got rid of the bike. It WAS NOT getting into the crankcase from the transmission.

I did find that that "harder" I rode the bike the less the oil smelled like gas.
I suspect riding aggressively and getting the motor hot burned off some of the gas. But who knows for sure.

But basically, I just ended up using cheap oil and changing it after every ride and never had a motor issue

This. Honda sent out a service bulletin not long after they came out, I ended up buying a 2010 and made sure not to start it up and immediately go "BRAPBRAPBRAPBRAP" like 90% of the people in the pits did. Never had an issue. Also, overfilling the trans/clutch side with oil fixed the fading issue those 4 bolt baskets had. Just poured a whole quart in and it kept it from fading. Bike has 100 hours with zero issues, valves still in spec.

The oil weight has NOTHING to do with the issue.

It happens on almost all snowbikes. The colder that you run the bike the worse it will be. Was it cold out when this happened? And you may not have been riding hard breaking it in, so it never really warmed up.

Didn't read all the responses so this may be redundant, but over-fueling can occur when the bike is not able to heat up to 'operating' temperature, as is often the case when timbersledding. But even if the motor reaches operating temp, over-fueling can also occur due to incorrect mapping or a malfunctioning sensor telling the ecu the engine is cold.

The thing to be careful of is that fuel in the oil will rapidly reduce the oil's viscosity. They are both petroleum products so they will mix.

Yeah all this. Efi will run richer when cold and fuel washes passed the rings especially when you blip the throttle like a Harley rider does at every stop light. When it warms up piston/rings/cylinder gets tighter.

I didn’t run it to the dealership. I did change the oil up. Maybe I wasn’t riding it hard or blipping throttle before its warm etc. now that I make sure I do not do. but I do change oil often like recommended. seems to have clear it up. Bike continues to run great. Can’t be happier.
