Dragging the rear brake mainly helps control or minimize kicking.

Never verified, just heard that.
Uh if anything that would keep the front wheel down which is a way bigger issue in a whoop pad. The vast majority of the crashes we see in the whoops happen because the front wheel got too high and missed a whoop

Brakes can squeak when you're not actively braking, and get quieter when actively braking...

Why is it so loud? It’s literally the only bike you can hear. But when he’s going through whoops or something it’s loud. Can hear it over other bikes. Has this been talked about before?
Word on the street is that all the other teams are scrambling to make their suspensions make the same sounds 😬

Why are people speculating what it is? It’s the rear shock.
When he comes up short or drags a wheel on the down ramp it “squeaks” or even bangs.

I highly doubt that it is the shock, more than likely the rear brake. I'm assuming that he uses some pads that have a high quantity of metal so they grab harder. Since the pads are always in contact with the rotor it's like a record player if you get some resonance going. My Mountain bike is pretty bad about squeaking like that.
Show me a video of a current pro dragging the rear brake in the whoops.

Maybe it's the collective sound of the team of guys it takes to keep a bike together for a full race while Eli abuses the S@$t out of it. LOL.

I find that hard to believe. Not saying it isn't possible but could you imagine trying to feather the rear brake on top of the bucking the bike is taking through the whoops? These guys are good, but there's no way you could do that lap after lap without having a terrible result at some point. Plus, I'm pretty sure Tomac doesn't even use brakes.
He does a lot. Every moto his brakes squeak from dragging and his clutch is cooking and releasing steam under the bike

You guys are high if you think he’s dragging his brake 4th gear pinned through a set of sx whoops!

For some reason I noticed the Kawi's have a noticeable chain slap off power when landing from a jump. Savatgy's bike last year was super noisy and the chain would slap making a "clack... clack" sound. It reminded me of the early '90's YZ's that had horrible chain slap. Tomac's bike did the same as Savatgy's but Tomac is brutally hard on the clutch and brakes. As we all have seen, Tomac gets the oil so hot, you can see it steaming out of the oil vent hose after a few laps. All bike have chain slap, but for sure the Kawi's are the loudest and most noticeable to me. Tomac's brakes do squeal coming into a corner as he tends to brake-slide to get the rear end to come around more than most. Just my observations when Ralph shuts up enough for me to hear the bikes.

Agree... Also, the riders are always on the balls of their feet through the whoops so that their ankles and knees can provide a suspension for their body. Watch a slo-mo whoops run... Not getting a toe on the brake.

It's his brakes. Villopoto's Kawasaki made the same noise. Probably a combination of a very hard braker and the kind of brake pads that Factory Kawasaki team has been using.

With all this suspension noise, brake noise, chain slapping, and screaming tracks it’s no wonder Eli uses earplugs

Amazing how Tomac can be asked the question, confirm its his shock and says it always has and dont know why it does. Yet, people keep posting, nope, its his brake.... Tomac has said its the shock, not the brake

Can you post up where he said that? And have you thought that maybe most people in this thread don't know of that Tomac quote and were left to speculate about the noise? You could have politely shared that information and aided the discussion, instead of acting like a douche.

For whoever is going to Atlanta this weekend, pay attention. Very noticeable in the whoops. Even with bikes around him you can hear it over the bikes.

That quote by Eli doesn't seem to confirm anything other than the squeak's existence.

Like DP said, that's not proof that the shock is making the noise. Tomac didn't mention anything about the squeak coming from the shock. And even his quote about it there is just hearsay. I asked for a link of Tomac saying that the squeak was coming from the shock.

I wasn’t referring to in the whoops. Albeit that was the original post. I can’t imagine trying to drag the brake in the whoops. You would think that his foot pressure would certainly change while hitting one to the next

The chain slides are harder than most bikes

Clutches will slip a little every time the rear tire hits a whoop. And hot clutches can sometimes squeal. Could it be clutch squeal every time the rear tire impacts an obstacle?

Sorry I didn’t mean to come across like an ass. I too have heard the squeak on the broadcast. Never through the whoops though. Just being able to get his toe to the brake pedal tip would be a challenge as these guys are all on the balls of their feet going through the whoops and anytime they are in the attack position. But I also never heard of a guy getting his foot under the peg to grip the bike and Tomas absolutely does just that. We are on the same page!

The fact that there's a whole thread discussing a "squeaky" shock is incredible. It doesn't squeak. At all.
