I think pro riders need to have a serious look at the PBR (the rodeo thing, not the beer). The top riders got together and did their own thing. I saw a thing today that the 50th highest earning rider has earned almost a half million (in prize money) over their careers. If pro bull riders can do it, why not pro moto riders?

I see a lot of similarities in the two sports (bull riding and moto) in terms of sponsor exposure (not a lot of advertising space on a bull rider and none on the bull), perception of the sport from non-participants (it’s crazy...my kid isn’t doing that, sort of thing) and moto could benefit a lot from how those pro bull riders started the PBR and how they’ve marketed it.

Just a thought.
i think they reason why, is most if not all bull riders were struggling under the old set up, if the top 8 - 10 riders were pulling 6/7 figure salarys form the factory bull sellers it would not have happened,

The trouble is, the kind of people in our sport are the kind that want "free links" rather than PPV, they'll 'boot ride' in to events rather than pay on the gate and will sue track owners when their aluminium frames become tarnished.

These aren't the sort of people who are going to dig in to their pockets to show up & pay up so that a 20th place finisher is earning a tidy salary. It just won't happen.

People like Noah are the heart and soul of the sport we love so much!

There’s a reason Noah only does one race a year. There’s a reason Dare Demartille doesn’t do outdoors.

If you want to make money racing, don’t go to outdoor nationals.

Unfortunately it's the sport we chose. Golf and NASCAR has bigger fan bases, bigger sponsors, and easier spectating. You can't just pull money out of your ass and pay a 20th place pro $60,000. I don't see SX/MX ever getting to that level of sponsorship without huge changes, changes that would take away a lot of the aspects that make dirt bike racing, dirt bike racing.
Yep. Go through any town, housing addition and count how many garages have mx bikes and then how many race mx.

Very few. But I'd bet a large percentage have a set of golf clubs. Or even bowling balls.

These huge changes would bring in more money. But as you say, it would bring in a whole other crowd that

probably never witnessed a real mx race. The Travis Pastrana crowd.

My question is why does he have a rope on him? Hell we have driveways steeper than that roof..

Noah is one nice kid, met him at Undrground in Texas a few years ago and he was quiet, respectful and let his riding do most of the talking. And he ripped! He may be working an 8-6 gig, but he did give it one hell of a shot, and I can only wish him nothing but the best!

Motocross will never be on the level that ball sports are, just forget that, it sucks but our sport will never be on that level.

That being said the amount of money these races bring in the payout basically being the same since Vietnam is bullshit, I don't see any reason why it couldn't be double what it is, hell they raised the price of mechanics and guest passes to 60 last year from 50, used to be 40, but it isn't going back to the riders.

That or make entry fees free or close to free like the Bookoo AX series did, that was awesome.

But then again they are getting damn near record rider turnouts this year trying to qualify at half of the races, so I guess why should they change it, until riders stop showing up they will most likely never change it.

I think it’s interesting that out of all Motorsports, motocross is probably the most underpaid, but the easiest to get into for the regular fan. You would think that would drive more of a fan base. Not like you can just drive your own NSACAR car down to the track and turn some laps with your buddies... but yet a huge fan base. I don’t get it.

It’s sad that this is a moto site and some of you don’t have the racers backs...or even the sport for that matter. Someone posts, “I think motocross is a little bigger than bowling”....and he gets down voted?...twice? A couple MX fans that have more respect for bowlers? WTF?

I didn't downvote but I would think a ton more people participate in bowling than motocross . It would be interesting to see the tv viewership numbers of motocross vs. pro bowling.

Also there are hundreds making little to nothing just like MX.

Bull Riding is no different, 2% make 98% of the money

He finished 20th in one race. Which is clearly better than I can do. Props to Noah. He probably wouldn't be working a day job if he was a consistent top 20 guy. Lets keep this in perspective and take a breather.

You hit the nail on the head. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd go through the posts of these guys crying about what guys make and unions, and they're probably the same guys looking for free links, bitching about how much the app costs and trying to find a way under the fence at the races.

The money has to come from somewhere. Simple as that. Comparing other sports is irrelevant unless you have all the details. The riders could get together and demand all they want, but if the money isn't there who pays them? Davey Coombs isn't running around like Dan Bilzerian and works his ass off personally at every National at Lorettas, not to mention owning Racer X too. All of this complaining about privateers is painful. They choose their profession. If they provide so much value, they should sell themselves to Verizon, Coke, or some other huge sponsor that will pay them to finish 20th. It is the same as saying an auto mechanic is paid enough etc etc. If you don't like your income, do something about it.

As David vuillemen always says “ if you want to make more money and have a nice factory ride the solution is simple
GO FASTER “
Bingo, go faster and the sponsors will come.

No one said they have more respect for bowlers. Were talking numbers. One bowling event in Feb 2019 had a total viewership of 1,131,000. Outdoors is lucky to get half that.
Bowling is big. Moto is not. Viewer and participation wise.

Sorry I just don’t have a bit of sympathy for the guy. They aren’t being forced to have the opportunity to line up on the same gate as the best riders n the world. 20th place privateers can’t hang with the leaders for 2 corners and within 15 minutes they are being lapped. Fans don’t pay $$$ to watch privateers. There would be zero TV coverage if it was only the privateers. Are they extremely talented riders? Of course they are. But they need to understand they are not going to make a good living with the talent they have. If they aren’t happy about the situation then stay closer to home and make decent spending money at local pro races. If it was me I would be thrilled to be able to race in front of 20,000 fans. But I’d also understand why I needed to go to a real job on Monday. There will never be big purses/dollars for these guys, never has been that way and it’s not going to change

It's not likely that the riders are going to come together and "strike" a series or event to get their point across. I imagine most riders on a salary have specific contract language that prevents from doing so and the privateers can't afford not to.

But, what if we fans did something?? If the fans boycotted attending SX events, how long would Feld hold off? What would the national promoters do if all the fans stayed home for peaceful protest?

Social media is a powerful tool. I cannot fathom that it would be that difficult to stage fan strikes to try and force something to be done.

Thoughts?

Don’t ever blame the tracks who pay the purse because it’s only a part of everything else they pay for. And I agree if the tracks put on the races themselves it might not be as much a pretty show with repeaters and trusses and all the other stuff but I bet the tracks could then pay a bigger purse.
MX Sports does bring the whole package but anyone who’s been around a long time it’s to much show and not enough about the race or the riders. This is my opinion only stated here but I am pretty sure I’m not alone.

23rd OA 250 West Supercross (2017)

His best finish was 11th at Washougal, other than that hovered around 15th-18th all summer in 2016.

Don't forget that these privateers are not allowed to market themselves at the races.....why are FELD and MX SPORTS worried about a few hundred bucks, this is related to. MMA marketing of the fighters. a fan of the racing, seems like the promoters think they are the sport.

They can market themselves with resumes, race results when they arent racing.
