I can promise you one thing, it wasnt because KTM did something better. It is 100% because Harley ignored their customers yet again and they are tired of it. Harley is losing ground to Indian like a watershed. Loyal Harley riders wanted a new frame to fix the flexy, unstable feel. Harley promised an all new bike, same frame. Indian sales went through the roof shortly thereafter.

Harley's revenue is triple KTM even though KTM sold more units. OP forgot to mention this.

Thanks for that link.
Would like to see a further breakdown of those numbers, where their biggest market is. The comments are interesting. Any time you take a high altitude view of the industry, moto appears to be a very small segment.

Harley makes more revenue from clothing sales than from their motorcycle sales. Pretty fuckin pathetic when the clothing you sell (license) is worth more than the product being advertised on it.

I've always heard this, but I don't think it's true. You have any hard numbers to back that up?

The hard evidence is on every single shirt in every single store in the country..... They dont sell Harley parts at the corner gas station but they do sell Harley shirts/Lighters/ashtrays....etc. The softgoods (License) is EVERYWHERE. I too would like to see the numbers on Softgoods vs/ Hardgoods for Harley. I bet its 2:1

SIDE NOTE: My family has been buying KTM's since 1991 for MI enduros and seeing the growth of them over the years has been really fun to watch. You cant go 10 Miles up I-75 on a hot sunny Saturday and not see an orange scooter in the back of a pickup. The starts of Harescrambles is a Sea of orange. Smile

Yeah but that's not quite what harley is selling. Part of it is the hardware, sure, but the majority of what they sell people is an identity. Harley is half lucky and half skilled to have developed such a unique "product".

KTM builds bikes for enthusiasts, HD builds bikes for posers. KTM wants race results, HD wants dirt bags.

Might be in the financials if you care to dig through them. Look at the notes and specifically for breakdown by area and products.

KTM has a great dirt bike niche market, however that market is slowly being eroded by the Japanese bikes getting better and better and competing in areas that KTM used to dominate in due to no competition.

Had this buddy in the 90s while stationed in Germany who always wore a particular Harley hat. Almost never took it off until someone told him he should take a hard look at the hat. It didn't say "Harley Davidson motorcycles", it said "Harley Davidson motorclothes". He was pissed and we all had a great laugh for a long time.

Or pretty genius. If you're brand is making money with merchandise on that level, then let the money roll in.

Did my original post get deleted?

Lot of ignorance aimed at Harley and HD owners in this thread. Keyboard badasses....pretty laughable.

Congrats to KTM....

So then they're quality parts that are priced fairly? Should have started with that, because that'd be a better joke. Tongue

MC sales: $964M
Parts: $159M
Merch: $54M
Licensing: $8M
