2020 Yamaha's

I like those big pretzels I get at the ball field.
That's it? One down vote for that totally inappropriate, stupid comment? You down voters have a very weak game today.

isn't it within a few pounds of all the other Japanese bikes? What are you talking about? No way the extra 5 lbs or whatever it is is keeping you from being a winner. Oh, I know, the KTM! bla bla bla. Lose your MXA subscription. Percentage wise you are splitting hairs. So if you have $223 dollars vrs $235 you can retire? So stupid. You guys are so fooled by ktm. Light tubes, chain, air forks. All to show you how light they are. So gullible

Well , Ive been doing some laps lately on my mate's 2019 ktm 350...and they are about..what? A pound lighter than their 450?
Going back to back with that thing and my 17 yz 450...no comparison..the ktm is and feels so much lighter its ridiculous..its like riding a 125 by comparison..
Yeah I know my bike isnt the new generation..but the 17 is actually a bit lighter than the 18 / 19"s.
I would like to get a ride on the current ktm 450...I did get a few laps in on a 19 yz 450...its much improved on the old generation bike but it still feels big and heavy..especially to me as I have had the forks and shock on my 450 lowered internally which actually makes a noticeable improvement on how it feels tipping into corners and making quick direction changes..
I don't belittle the weight difference between the ktm and Yamaha in any way...to me it is instantly noticable..and a great feeling...doesn't mean im about to run out and buy a ktm though...
Im not really a 450 guy...I like having one....but its not my favorite bike...I'll probably never buy another one...but if I were to, it would likely be the KTM unless the Yamaha were to find a way to drop about 15 pounds in weight..

Yes I understand that...but that is far from theventirevreason it feels lighter..it feels so much lighter because it is...about 16 pounds?

Strap a 15lb dumbbell to your bike and see if you notice.

Or, better yet, go ride a 125 and see what light weight and lower engine inertia feels like! Sooo much more forgiving!

You can’t compare a 350 to a 450 fairly, the 350 is going to feel way lighter just due to less rotating inertia. It’s the same reason a 125 feels way lighter than a 250 even if they’re close to the same weight. Also the same reason an Alta can weight 270 lbs and still feel as light as a 250f.

The thing the Yamaha has going for it is a very lively engine, which makes the bike feel lighter than it is. Ive ridden a new ktm and it wasn’t nearly as stark of a difference as some of you want to believe, part of the reason being the slower reving engine.
Yes, I understand the difference..its why I would like to try the ktm 450..I wouldnt expect it to feel as light as the 350 although it pretty much is.
Im not as keen on the 350 as I initially was though..In the low end to midrange it feels like a strong 250f..very pleasant and easy to ride, but the real power is up top. There seems to be a bit of a flat spot just after the midrange, then it just takes off like a missile on the top end...it cought me anawares in a set of rollers as I was lofting the front wheel over the next roller and I nearly flipped the bike! Ham fisted riding....but I think that high rpm power might get a bit tiring once a track gets really rough.
My 450...fat and heavy as it is, is very stable and a bit like a racing tractor! Im a real short shifter on my 450, but was very comfortable immediately on a 19 yz 250f, with letting it rev right out between shifts...power felt super linear, just kept building..
The KTM seems a real 2 stage powerband...the transition from low/mid to top end would take some getting used to

God awful analogy. The weight is distributed evenly (mass centralization) and the 125 isnt close to a comparison.

Seriously?! I wasn’t being literal.

But it’s still 15 (or whatever) pounds. Nor did I suggest a 125 was a comparison, only that if you want to truly understand how big a difference there can be ride a 125, which is the lightest and has the least inertia.

Better than average riders rave about how light the KTM's are when they try them. Having a light as possible dirt bike has been a thing since motocross was invented. Ask Roger Decoster, he was the one constantly in the machine shop looking for ounces to shave off the factory bike parts. KTM's advantage is that they are a small enough company to quickly adapt and put those tiny changes, that add up to a lot, into production.
The Japanese will catch up. eventually, but for now, it does make a difference.

Coming off a 17 KTM 450 and going to a 19 YZ 450 I cant say I noticed a difference in actual weight on the track. In some cases, the "heavier" feel actually improves stability and feeling planted.

I bet the 250 gets alot of minor engine refinements that may go unmentioned. Fast guys down here in Texas have had a ton of issues with the 19 YZ's (particularly the countershaft). Rumor is the Star team is running 18 motor in the 19 frame.
Definitely not the 18 engine in 19 frame...

lugging a 450 at 6-8k is going to have a lot less gyro than screaming a 250f at 11-14k the whole time.

hoping the 2 stroke gets adjustable pegs and triple clamp

I had the same experience. Going from a 17 450 KTM to a 18 and now 19 Yamaha.

The only place that i noticed the difference in weight is in the air, not much but it is obvious. On the ground it felt actually more planted and stable, especially in the corners (by far the most predictable bike in the corners that i have been on). The funny thing is that my kickstand (KTM powerparts kickstand) is easier to actuate when the Yamaha is on it compared to the lighter KTM, i assume that has to do with the weight balance of the two bikes.

With that said, less weight is always better. But Yamaha has done a very good job with balancing it out.

As for 2020, the bike will have a new head. The only thing that i miss from my KTMs is the hydro clutch. I rode a 19 SX 125 a few days ago and man that clutch is awesome. I would love to see a hydro clutch on the Yamaha stock. Even if it would bump up the MSRP 100 €.

To me, I don't know if I miss the hydro clutch or not. The Yamaha pull is nice and consistent. I'm at 50 hours and on the same stock plates, and I went 60 hours on the KTM stock plates, so I'm no abuser.

Alta is about 30pounds heavier then a ktm sxf 250. Yet they feel equally light on the track and in air.

Actual weight has little impact compared to rotating mass.

Almost time. Any leaks or teasers out there. About to dump some more money in my 15 yz250 but have been holding off until I see what's happening with the new 450's

any yz250x owners? thinking about picking one up
6/3/2019 2:41pm
If i was a betting man i’d Put my money on a revamped yz125 or yz250 or both as i heard that Yamaha wants a new 2t line up. The new 65 and 85 is proof of what i heard. Guess we’ll see if my sauces are correct from 3yrs ago as they got the 65 & 85 correct

This will be interesting ..its definitely time for new 2 strokes..
I actually know someone that 100% knows for sure whats going on ..stupidly ,I was chatting to him on messenger about this and that...bike stuff...and I said that Im going to buy a new yz 125..then asked if I should wait to see whats coming..ahemm...no response to that..I felt like a dickhead for slipping in that question..for those who really do know...confidentiality agreements are ironclad...telling a mate something on messenger ..even dropping a hint..is easily traceable and grounds for dismissal..
It was interesting to read a recent interview with Doug Dubach, where he was asked what was the craziest idea or gadget he ever had to test for Yamaha...he totally side stepped the question..
Their confidentiality agreements are fucking serious and last forever..
So I have no idea...and I owe my friend an apology for asking such a stupid question

I have the 2019 YZ125 and couldn't be happier. At 54 years young, the light weight, low rotating mass, SSS suspension and all the other little goodies just make it a great bike. It never feels like its getting you into trouble. Light, nimble, fast, good quality and can be got at a good price. Also cheap to ride and repair.
Villopto seems to ride one quite well too!!

Yeah...in a way..I dont really care if they dont update...Id still love to see them do it ..but ive got a bunch of spare parts and wheels etc..so they might become redundant...the current bike is exactly as you say..Im 53 and love the yz 125...if I could only have one bike...that would be it!

I’ve been waiting years for Yamaha to release new 2 stroke MX bikes. Now that the day is likely here, I am actually wishing it weren’t. There are plenty of new bikes released every year. But what other bike can you buy that hasn’t changed in 13 years, is still competitive and still looks great?

I’ve bought them new, and right now I have one that I bought with 10hrs for 4K. I’ve been happy either way. But what is so great, is that a newer rider could buy an older model and for very little money dress it up and it would look like a brand new 19’. Also, nearly every part is cheap, can be found on eBay, or has many aftermarket options.

They’re simply great bikes. Hopefully if there is a new one, it’s great enough to be left alone for a decade too.

I could see them changing the 125, but I don’t see a reason to change the 250 (2 stroke).

Yes have a 2018. I really like it!! Very linear good smooth power throughout. I ride scrambles/singletrack trails and still ride MX quite a bit. I am a Vet B or mid pack B rider. I have nothing but good things to say about this bike for the riding I do it has been awesome. Recent bikes I have had are KTM 350xc and yz250f and this bike has been better for my needs than eaitehr of these bikes were. Any questions send me a message.
