If I'm Tomac's mechanic I tell him:

"Eli, it's 2017 all over again although this time the championship is a long shot. You need to manage the pace from the front and bunch 'em up as much as possible in the early laps. All we can hope is that something crazy happens with Webb behind you. He can get a banner caught in his wheel or something similar that might cause a DNF. We'll tell Savatgy to assist if he has the opportunity. If other riders crash out guaranteeing Webb a 20th or better, I'll notify you on the pit board that the championship is over and then you just charge for the win".


With the very very slim chance something could happen to Webb, it's still a possibility. I'm not sure why Eil would do anything other than the above if he's in a position to do so. A rider like Eli may only get a couple more chances in his career to win a SX championship in Vegas. You do whatever the hell is necessary to bunch those dudes up behind you! It will give him his best chance at the championship and it will put on a great show. Win Win! Bunch 'em up!

After the fiasco with Dungey, I don't think Tomac will touch Webb, other than maybe an aggressive pass. Taking out Webb will be Savatgy's or maybe Bowers job.

Actually it also was on a KTM at Redbud. DNF. Bike would not start after the downhill by turn 3.

Webb goes easy off the start rides around in 11th to 15th comfortably and takes home the title regardless of what everyone else is doing. Roger is not called “The Man” just for shits and giggles...

If Im Webb I'd seriously consider letting everyone go into the first turn before me to avoid trouble... then pick up easy points as the race goes on. But as a true racer he'll go for it.

If I'm Tomac's mechanic I'm firing him up for a big win. Get a decent start, push straight to the front the way Eli knows how, and simply set sail. Lap times on the pit board each lap, let Eli chase the clock and win by a considerable margin. This way at least there's some kind of message sent to the field that the real Eli still exists, has finally found some comfort on the new bike, and is set (once again) for an assault on the 2020 title.

The championship is gone this year. All of these scenarios above are absolutely wishful at best. Webb's bike literally has to fail on the line/very first lap for him to finish outside the top 20.
