Or just playing outside. Not all, but many have become soft.
MX (racing) has lost its appeal to a lot of people. Just not worth the $$$. I enjoy going to the practice day with my bros, and pounding out a bunch of laps.
I wanted to get into racing after a long hiatus. The class structure with endless classes and small, per class, fields make racing less appealing. In the spring and summer I recall having 60+ riders in both the 125 C and B classes. Even low days were 30 on the gate.
I don’t know what it would take, but bikes that are $9-$10k msrp isn’t it.

And i would love to see it again , im thinking its got to have more to do with jumps than people are admitting like some have talked about moto being too supercrossy and wishing
Tracks where more natural terrain and i think this kind of shows that a lot of people want that , there isnt much for jumps in this form of racing correct?
Have you ever hole shot a race with a full gate?? -- Ain't nothing like it, i dont care what class you race, you cant get them feelings from practice. But for many practice is all they want. But for me, i liked the butterflies, the nervousness on the line, the sense of competing with awesome folks who are into for the same reasons.
I really miss it!!
I appreciated a practice day as well for the cost and fun of riding. Many race days are not as long as they used to be many are over by 3-4 in afternoon now. I liked to ride and race as much as i could whether it was racing, practice track, or busting laps around the farms i grew up on. It's whatever your into but open practice days is probably whats keeping tracks open these days
*Kinda weird but some of my biggest crashes came on open practice days, no explanation for it really, just how it worked out for me.
Gas = same ammount.
Practice at budds is 30. Racing is 30 plus 10 for gate fee. $10 extra, total.
Sure, not as many laps. But if people showed up, there would be battles. Two 5 lap battles at budds is a fun day. More fun than 20 half ass laps, in my opinion. But hey, to each their own.
Pit Row
Everyone complains about small turnout, but if you raced that would be one more on the line. If everyone who hates small turnouts actually raced, there wouldn’t be small turnouts.
Bike costs. Yeah yeah yeah, I know. I also just bought a low hour 2004 RM 250 this spring and raced it today. I won. I’m not fast, and there were hardly any riders in my class... but, I did see plenty of 10k bikes, but never saw them on the track. What we want to ride and what we need to ride are two different things.
You guys are right, I actually raced a harescramble last weekend and it was nuts 652 turnout. I got SMOKED in +30B, first harescramble in 18 years, 17th of 29... I’ll do some more. Different, laid back culture too there.
You all are right. I guess we don’t need to race but apparently my nostalgia hit me hard today. I remember wualifying for C class, and racing just sucks now.
We need to drop tons of classes. But that’s less money towards the tracks and promoters, and no guarantee extra people will show.
You’re picking a far race, with a membership fee (only one I know of in the mid Atlantic), to compare to a local practice? Of course that’s going to cost more. That’s not my point.
How much would it cost you to race at tomahawk vs practice at tomahawk? A negligible difference.
And don’t even get me started on food. When i see people complain about spending money on food on race day it makes me crazy. What, if you didn’t go to the track you would be at home starving? Pack a lunch, just like I did today. All the same food I eat at home, legitimately down to the calorie and macronutrient (because I’m on a strict meal plan right now). Going riding should cost you $0 extra in food than a normal day, if you care enough to prepare...
How many show up at a MAMA race?
