They have to find a way to keep it from being relevant.
Jack up the entry fee, minimal laps, beat track, and end of the day. All negatives! So they can say we had no interest from the riders and fans so now its gone. See two strokes are dead, when they know all too damn well the if you put it at intermission people will be hanging off the fences cheering as if every rider out there is Stankdawg and that looks bad for the 4T industry...
They are putting the 125 race last so that the repeater thieves will have more time to cross the track after the pro racing is over and if one of them does get clipped it won't be as bad.
Having 40 125s pay $100/entry instead of having to pay 10 security guards an extra hour.
Pure genius....
The bigger picture i believe is to eventually do away with the national series all together and have two premier pro series SX based in the US and MXGP based in Europe but the racing for both will be global.
I don't think they saw a resurgence of interest in 125 racing rising to the level of getting back on the schedule so now must kill it but in a way that makes them look like they did their best but just not enough interest sorry.
I hope i am dead wrong about an eventual shutting down of the US national series. However If it continues to run with busted up SX riders not riding or riding with injuries and far from 100% it will eventually shut it's self down due to lack of top level riders competing and sponsors pulling support while the best in the business are in top shape for the MXGP opener.
Let them ride time practice/qualifing on Friday afternoon on pressday.
First moto on Saturday morning right after the last 450 time practice
Second moto between first and second moto's of the 250 and 450 class.
Let them race 20 minutes + 1 lap and make it a championship.
Back in the day there was always a womans class on Saturday. To plenty of room left for the 125s
Pit Row
As an alternative they should prep the tracks to be less like slot car racing and allow the tracks to develop some proper character. Have a look at an old national from Unadilla from back in the day for example. Very natural terrain, with no artificial obstacles or prep. Acceleration bumps going uphill that are a couple of feet deep. Speeds were way less, but the racing was awesome!
Those kind of tracks allowed an excellent rider on a 125 to keep up with a 500. Just check out any old MXDN on youtube. I think thats got to be because skill and technique were important all of the time every corner and on every lap.
The Dutch Masters (but also the german championship if i'm not mistaken) has been a 1 day format for years. It had the 250's and 450's pro class (which essentially is a semi GP class with 10+ GP riders), with free practice and qualifying (with over 40 riders, so some don't qualify), and 2 motos. And on the same day it also has the 85cc and 125cc, again with FP, qualifying and 2 motos. They even have a 1 hour break between motos 1 and 2.
Who thought it would be best to put those skill level racers on 125's on a track that rough at the end of the day?
Is NBC making this call? Follow the money.
Making it open to b riders allows for no-purse. Id like to see it A CLASS only. And it gives kids valuable experience on a chewed up track with professional lines.....not a bad idea to do it at the end of the day in my opinion!
A lot of complaints of new pros is not having experience because the line choice is way different than your local or amatuer national race....
Don’t worry your nbc sports gold package won’t cover this race!
Only change I see is the race happening at the end of the day. That’s a bummer...but I’m sure it has to do with time/schedule/tv. And top level B and A rider/ former Pros will be just fine out there on the track no matter the time of day. Just happy to see 125s out there in some capacity.
Yeah no for sure! That's even less thought out than the current format!
An announcement will be made after Daytona when all of the details are ironed out.
The reason for the $100 entry fee is because it now includes admission for the day and a pit pass, as well as the entry fee.
Sorry for the confusion.
