Some of it could definitely be chemical burn, some of it could also very well be chafing from the mud being between your clothing and your skin. I'm surprised at that too. The bikes are hosed down between heats, LCQs, Mains, etc. The Main is the longest race, obviously, so the lime should have only have had about 20-25 minutes on the bike at the longest period. That seems pretty quick, especially if it isn't just lime on the bike but also mud and dirt.

I'd be curious to see what bikes look like from all the mud races to see how much worse this is.

Those of saying Gold Balm or what ever powder you use for chafing will work has never experienced lime burn. That stuff is nasty, it took me a year to rid of off my hand.

Just wait until next year, that lime isn’t going anywhere.

it's happened more than you would think, this year it seems to be worse.

This issue needs looked into but the whole sport could suffer if the wrong people get involved could you imagine having a soil specialist and an EPA watch dog at every race ?

That was for application to heal and prevent chafing which APLMAN said he thought maybe it was - I don’t think anybody’s recommending putting desitin on a caustic burn and calling it good.

If a soil specialist or EPA watchdog were consulted ahead of time maybe that would prevent some serious health problems down the road, because rider safety is supposed to be top priority isn't it? Imagine if some of that shit had gotten directly into somebody's eyes what kind of damage that would cause! There were a lot of riders who had to chuck their googles during the race and were riding with no protection. The race organizers have a lot to answer for, but since this sport doesn't have any "independent" journalism this will probably get swept under the rug too.

Riders sign paperwork to acknowledge the risks but you can’t sign away your rights. And you can’t indemnify an organising body from being responsible for rider safety. So, the riders have a case I believe if the track contained dangerous materials.

I’m betting they didn’t use to much more than they have in the past but because of all the rain and how deep the track got we are seeing the effects a lot worse.
Calcium chloride will do the same "hardening" of the soil. You don't have to use lime. Calcium chloride is bad for parts and skin too, but not as bad as lime (caustic burns). There are organic polymer based additives that will also do it which would be much safer for people and wouldn't hurt equipment. Using lime is dumb, it's not 1975.

Ya, it's bad and that was really dumb whoever did it. The burns will go away, most likely already have. I've had more caustic burns than I want to admit due to working in the chemical industry. I didn't know and frankly can't believe they used lime. Looking at the etching on the aluminum, that had to been a shit ton of lime. Those bikes are toast. Again, they have polymer based dust control additives that won't cause this issue and still provide the hardening of the soil during track build. Don't know if it works as well as lime, but I'd sure as hell be testing it to see. The pH of the water had to have been +12 to do that to those bikes in that short of a time frame.
