There is a difference between riders assuming all risk during racing activities and negligence. How many 10s or hundreds of thousands in damages have been caused to not only factory but privateer equipment. This is not to mention the bodily harm that was created to everyone, not just the riders, that came into contact with the chemical... I could see lawsuits filed on this.

Think I’m crazy, that greens keeper was awarded like 40million in damages last year for using “round up” .... the same stuff we all have in our garages.

I would say that this has the potential to get pretty ugly.

I remember when I was a production assistant for a film studio, we would dump lime into the studio dumpster after shooting food all week to kill the bacteria and stink from our bin. We'd wear full respirators, rubber aprons, gloves, etc. Lime is no joke, and when it gets on you, it burns like hell. Something's telling me that this was a really really bad idea.

The kids did not get to race due to the conditions.
Guess they ended up being the lucky ones in the end.

This issue needs looked into but the whole sport could suffer if the wrong people get involved could you imagine having a soil specialist and an EPA watch dog at every race ?
I specifically asked about that race because if you Google “Lime Supercross” there’s a vital pic with a CBS Camera guy wearing a mask because they put down 10 tons of lime.

Oh they rode! They didn’t get far but the race happened and they got covered in mud. They just didn’t show it on the tv

Not sure why they would use lime to harden up dirt during rain. It doesn't work like that. And It doesn't soak up water either. During the rain, its like adding water to a concrete mixer, it just gets sloppier and soupier.

How many 10 wheel dumps full of lime did they add to that track? Gotta be a good sized number.

What!? That's ridiculous!

I should've known better than to believe what Ralph said on the broadcast then. My bad!

Watch lundmx YouTube video from last night he filmed the lime on the track and what it did to the bike after qualifying. It destroyed bikes in minutes https://youtu.be/ZN4f8Xo9V94

Lime is commonly used in earthwork operations to dry and stabilize wet soil. Tractor guys work with it a lot. It immediately sucks the moisture out of the dirt, but takes some time to harden the dirt.
I think it's been used for tracks for a while.

This is true, but there are other products that do the same thing that are safer and won't damage the bikes. Lime is obviously more readily available though, granted this rain wasn't a surprise. I'm betting that they are looking into this right now so it never happens again.

I wonder if this could be a rallying cry for a potential rider's union. This kind of stuff should be easily avoided.

Just imagine if something like this happened at a jobsite or a “real world job”.

These guys aren’t getting paid SHIT (from the ama/feld) and the teams wont bother to stand up for their employees.

I just think it’s insane that there isn’t some sort of riders association or anything of that nature. Hell, why not have someone or a retired guy be a “riders advocate” of some sort.. he talks to the riders and gets feedback, relays it to AMA/Feld and tries to get changes made for rider safety.

It’s never going to happen but it really, really should.

Didn't the AMA think ahead and put ATV flags on those tiny KTM's? Some of those little boys and girl could have disappeared in all that deep slop!
Did they announce a winner? or maybe the rider who got the furthest, about turn 3?.. .. .

To realize that after all these years hillbilly actually has an alternate account is the big news from this weekend.

Honestly it only takes a few minutes for that stuff to do that to a bike.

Let's just hope WADA doesn't consider lime to be a "performance enhancing product." The entire field would be on suspension and no one would know when they could race again until 2021.

What is the name of the individual that made the call on the chemical?

It may be a very positive thing if team managers, manufacturers, suspension companies are on the same side of the fence as the riders, with Feld being on the other side. I highly doubt the next step would be a rider's union but I have to believe an improved power/decision making structure may result.

Thunder Valley would put the sifted street sweeping dirt on the track (black dirt that Stew wadded in) and it's full of magnesium chloride from winter road crews. I don't think it was nearly as potent but it definitely left my bikes looking similar. It also helped me establish a strict habit of washing my bike the moment I get home from riding, no matter how tired I may be.
