And guess where way more than 140 per week are probably moving from all over? SoCal.

Yeah? From where? I can think of one place....but multiple? I guess to each their own. Nice place to visit in some areas , but you couldn't pay me to live there.
You’re the one proposing the dude that lives there needs to research and is going by feel—how about you research?
I guess we could all find reports skewed one way or another. For me up here in the NW , I don't mind the rain we get because we have a lot of green around here because of it , and it makes out spring/summer/fall riding pretty epic! I've been down to Southern Cali many times ( almost always during the spring / summer ) and it's to hot and dry for me there. We all love our own climate if it's something you are used to. I can't really bag on the political stuff down there either , as it isn't any better up here or Seattle either. The whole west coast is fucked as far as I'm concerned ( city wise anyways ). Getting out of the city ( which is 10 minutes away for me ) the people change , and I'm more accustomed to them since I was born and raised outside the city. So to each their own.

Seth....you may want to do a little research on this. What you " feel " and what is really happening , are two totally different things. As of about 6 months ago , Oregon has a segment on our local news stating that Oregon was receiving 140 people per week , moving up here from California. As migration moves North , it pushes everyone else out , weather that be more North or East. This is only 1 out of thousands of reports on it.

It's not a feel man, I live it every day. Developers building luxury condos aren't that dumb (overall). They wouldn't be putting in thousands of units if they couldn't sell them.

I’ve never seen the building booming like it is now in the San Diego area. Housing going up everywhere and there is still a shortage. Not sure where the mass exodus is taking place but I don’t think it’s in our area Seth. You know what it’s like here...could you ever leave a place like this Seth? I know I couldn’t. I can deal with people when needed to live in a place where the average temperature is a tick above/below perfect for most of the year.

And the crowds everyone freaks out about? That noise comes from the mouths of tourist or someone who doesn’t know their way around. I can hop on my bike and have complete solitude in a matter of minutes. From mountains to isolated beaches (yes even here in So Cal you can be on a beach by yourself when you know where to go)

I can deal with the drawbacks people read or watch on the fake news. All I know is life here is paradise to me. And BTW I’m not a Liberal. There are plenty of “normal” people here ?
I've been here 7 years (from New England) and only reason i could see leaving is if I had a bunch of kids. I wouldn't be able to afford it here and support a bunch of kids but I don't think I have to worry about that!

No where is perfect and we do deal with drawbacks but I agree with you, the positives outweigh the nonsense.

That price increase was actually still just market recovery. Were barely back to 06-07 pricing even though incomes have definitely risen in the past 10 years. The market is slowing down in terms of purchases and it's not just leveling off. I do not think that in the next two years we will see a huge housing crash though.

I get what you're saying about saving percentage wise but in CA the prices are almost to high to ever hit that. If you're saying 20-30% on a modest home in your area which costs $350k then yea, that's feasible to save for within 2-3 years. If a single family home is costing $700k then saving $140k is really hard. We have differences of opinion but I'm coming from a younger persons point of view. The only way I could eventually buy a $1M home before 30 is by buying the house I live in right now, building equity, and rolling that into the next house.

I've also followed the advice of my parents throughout all of this and they own 7 homes in which 6 are paid off. They may have not given me money for a home but they have definitely blessed me with knowledge and the ability to live at home for free while attending college. (Full disclosure they did pay for my bachelors which was cost in total $20k over 5 years) My MBA I have paid for on my own.
Sorry for the late response, I was traveling last night. Anyway, that’s great that your parents were able to do that for you. I have promised my kids a debt free education (at least for the first 4 years). And good on you for paying for the rest, you’re obviously a smart young guy and a hard worker. That’s great to see, the millennials get a bad rap. For the most part undeservedly so.

Good luck in your future endeavors, I’m sure you’ll do fine.

You give developers a lot of credit. I’ve been in the building industry my whole adult life, people in this industry have very short term memories.

I'm going to guess that the guys that love it in CA are able to make good money without commuting. I need to be on the water to make a living, so that puts me in traffic, and that is probably the biggest deal breaker for me. Now, I make most of my money being away from home, so it makes no sense to pay the Bay area cost of living. I could go to the foothills, and get a nicer house for the money, but I figure if I'm moving, I might as well go somewhere that my housing costs will be half what they are here.

You are right about me. I make my own schedule so I only drive when the roads are fairly clear. Also when you live here you do figure out ways to stay out of traffic jams if at all possible. No way I could handle bumper to bumper everyday

But you know there is traffic all over the country, I see it when we go on our RV trips. Anytime we get anywhere close to a major city it turns into a shit storm on the highways. Hard to get away from that no matter where you live.
My family in Boise sits in traffic longer than I do everyday. They tell me it takes them 3-4 light cycles to make it through some intercections

California from what I see daily is becoming more older aged people and less young people. By old I mean mid 30-s and up. By young there are less and less under 30's people here. I live and work in South Orange County. But I drive all over San Diego, LA and Riverside and San Bernardino counties on a regular basis. Sure there are pockets of some younger people in specific areas by the beach cities and college areas. But the norm is older people everywhere else. Also there are more under 40 year old people in the inland counties, where housing expenses are less. some of the reports you guys posted reflect what my eyes see, California is becoming older residents. Lots of reasons why.

I agree about the traffic, but where I live, it never ends. The only way for me to get anywhere is via 80, and it turns into a parking lot on weekends. Or if I want to go to Sonoma County, I end up parked in a sea of grape gawkers and it takes me an hour and a half to go 40 miles down back roads. I know what you are saying about Boise too. One of my friends moved up there, and I went to visit. After sitting in traffic I had to wonder why you would want to move to that?

We lived one year in Temecula and loved it! I didn’t think the traffic was too bad. Close to tracks, plenty of great restaurants & shops, so much to do around the area and surprisingly close to San Diego & LA. Fon’t forget about the wineries!

California sucks for sure. The weekend is tomorrow and I can't decide if I want to ride practice at one of several tracks, race at one of several tracks, camp in the desert and ride for free all weekend, go skiing or snowboarding, or go surfing and have a bbq on the beach, or lounge around the house and work on some projects. Maybe I'll go for a mountain bike ride. Maybe I'll go to one of the local casino's, or go see some live music. I can't decide. This was taken on my way home last night, no idea why someone would want to come here Wink

I came here for all of those but add a beach cruise on the bicycle, a skatepark to bmx or skate in damn near every city, and so on and so on. As I said Before I was fortunate to be able to move here and be able to modestly afford all of the things California has to offer and I love it and am not going anywhere else if all remains status quo.

More and more municipalities in the Bay Area are addressing the lack of affordable housing. There is a lot of residential and industrial construction. I drive all over the area for work and I am amazed how much construction
for technology companies is currently taken place. Over the next 10+ years parts of downtown San Jose is going
change dramatically thanks to Google and other companies. Areas of land that used to be vacant along 85,101,280, and 237 have been developed or are now under construction. The same can be said about San Francisco.

Miles of epic offroad trails all around, shoot guns off the front porch, surrounded by thousands of acres of BLM land, Cahuilla Creek 25 minutes away. Ain't never leaving.

Hard to beat Northern San Diego County. Oceanside, San Marcos, and fallbrook are still good deals (for SoCal) as far as housing goes. We live in Carlsbad, and Pala 30 mins away, Cahuilla, Perris, Elsinore, and GH just over an hr(ish), ocotillo Wells 2 hrs. 5 mins to the beach.

where would the best place to move to so I can ride tracks, trails , race bmx, ride mountain bikes, be in an area with decent rent/housing cost.
Close enough to decent jobs etc etc.

I was looking to fly out and check out areas so me and the family can be close to as much riding opportunities as possible.

Is Modesto a decent area?
Hahaha!!! You want to buy my house? About 4 blocks to the beach in north San Diego County. Lots of tracks within one to two hours drive. Surf, scuba, great weather. Hope you own some high tech internet company. Decent sized splittable lot and I'll sell for under a million.

I want to probably get a job changing truck tires or at a mx track or something. I have lots of skills and a work o holic.
We drag through the winters here taking the kids to trampoline parks 13$ an hour or bmx indoor trackshours away.
We need to move to where we can be outdoors year round.
I have seen several houses for rent in modesto and sacramento gor 1k to 1300 a month.

All I can say is-- there ain't no threads on here about Ohio or Oklahoma. America has always had a mixed opinion about it's crazy relative on the west coast. It's not surprising that you would pay a premium cost-of-living to be here (although you probably don't want to be in the big cities, period).

FFS, why wouldn't you move to Texas?
10 tracks within a 1-2 hour drive from Houston, MUUUUCH cheaper, you can have guns with real magazines and you can afford the whole house, not just the garage.

If you buy 10 acres you can build a track and a gun range.

Brother...here are some hard facts. I don't know what your standard of living is in Indiana but I can guarantee you will not have one in Cali by changing tires or working at a track. If better weather and outdoor activities are what you're after and you don't have skills that command good wages...you better consider TX or NM.

So much truth in this. California is over priced and over crowded IMO, but I love it (most of the time). My wife is from Indiana and she’d never go back now, but with that said - we pay a hefty price to live in this beautiful state. So much at your fingertips here whether it be surf, moto, or snow sports - all of which are a reasonable drive away. Hard to beat these views though ...

LOL at the fucking idiots who conceived this joke back in 2008. As an engineer I said 10 years ago it's the biggest boondoggle in a state that holds the top 50 Guiness records for pissing away tax payers money on impossible projects.

Worst part, us poor bastards who had to contribute via federal tax dollars sent to Gov. Moonbeam get nothing back as its money down the toilet. Truly just flushed away BILLIONS of dollars. I can't express in words just how tragic this mess was from the conception. Only in Kalifornia can they piss away tens of billions and get NOTHING in return. The asshole Jerry Brown was too blind, stupid, proud and invested to even realize and/or admit it was one of the biggest jokes in the WORLD between people who do this shit for a living. Just so sad, so much money.
